Global study reveals how heat stress is intensifying worldwide
A new study published in Nature Climate Change uses the Copernicus Climate Change Service's (C3S) ERA5-HEAT dataset to provide a comprehensive global-scale analysis of how heat stress has evolved since 1950. Using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), the study shows that hazardous heat is becoming more frequent, more intense and more widespread, with hotter nights, longer heat stress seasons and increasing numbers of people exposed to hazardous heat.

Intense heatwave brings hottest June for western Europe as the month ranks second warmest globally
June 2026 saw much of Europe hit by an intense heatwave, leading to record monthly temperatures across the western part of the region. The month was also the second warmest globally, as reported in the latest Climate Bulletin by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

What do we know about Europe's early and intense heatwave in May 2026?
Western Europe experienced an unusually early and intense heatwave during the second half of May 2026, mainly between 21 and 30 May. The largest temperature anomalies were observed across western France, England and Wales, where daily average temperatures reached more than 10°C above average, according to ERA5 data.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is preparing to release ORAS6, the latest generation of its ocean and sea-ice reanalysis system. The new dataset, that underpins the ERA6 reanalysis, represents a significant upgrade in the way historical ocean conditions are reconstructed and is expected to strengthen climate monitoring, forecasting and Earth system reanalysis activities in the years ahead. New D-Day weather reconstruction highlights key driver of military success and security
The Normandy landings of 6 June1944, known as D-Day, saw the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies undertaking the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, which went by the code name Operation Overlord, was initially planned for 5 June, but the weather forecast for that day predicted stormy conditions in the English Channel, causing the invasion to be postponed.
