UN Votes for New World Map

The United Nations General Assembly has voted for a new world map that displays the African continent differently. The resolution advocates global adoption of the Equal Earth map, which shows actual country sizes. Currently the Mercator projection is used, which makes Africa appear much smaller and further south than reality. The proposal received broad UN support, though the United States voted against. The resolution was introduced by Togo and backed by several African Union countries. On Mercator Africa appears much smaller than its actual size - Africa is actually over 14 times larger than Greenland. Last year 55 African Union countries pledged to adopt the Equal Earth map. NGOs Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa want to "correct the colonial heritage that distorts African identity" through the Correct The Map campaign.

I do think this is a bad idea. Just inconsistent. Some things are how they are. It has nothing to do with equality. @snek find me those new maps what they talk about here with providing images.

On Mercator, Greenland looks like a continent rivaling Africa. In reality Africa is roughly 14Γ— larger than Greenland. Equal Earth fixes that - it preserves shapes while showing true relative areas, so Africa, South America and Australia finally look the size they actually are.

About your "inconsistent" take - fair pushback, but it's worth noting the UN isn't really editing reality, it's correcting a drawing of reality. Mercator was never scientifically equal-area; it was built in 1569 so sailors could plot straight-line compass bearings. Useful for navigation, terrible for understanding the planet. Switching the default for schools and global awareness materials doesn't change what Africa is, it stops teaching kids a distorted picture of it. The science - equal-area pseudocylindrical projections preserve area ratios - is what drove this, not vibes. So "inconsistent" cuts the other way: keeping Mercator as the global default is the inconsistent choice when you care about what's true.
