Installed chocolatey for the first time because hey a package manager for windows sounds cool

Turns out it automatically installs random ass windows updates

I used chocolatey for a few years but stopped once I noticed that most of the packages I installed were outdated, or had weird dependencies, or wew just plain broken and unmaintained.

It depends on the packages and what their dependencies are. Have you ever used a package manager in Linux? It'll install all kind of dependencies and I have no idea what they are or what they're for so I wouldn't say it's chocolatey's fault.

Use WSL, or some sort of win32 linux utils, or maybe cygwin. Not this.

@hack What exactly do you need from win packages? and No - you can't install win specific stuff using apt.

@spongessuck Dependencies are fine. Windows updates – especially ones that I've deliberately not installed – aren't

@spongessuck I've used several Linux package managers and while dependency hell happens everywhere, with Chocolatey the issue is compounded by how often you come across broken or outdated packages. More often than not, I'll find the exact package I need, but several versions out of date with not a peep heard from the maintainer for six months or longer. And then there are the security implications .

I don't know if it's changed much, considering I stopped using it several years ago, but it was an absolute mess back then, and more trouble than it was worth.
