BMW put Spider-Man ads on your dashboard and called it a "special surprise" - this is where car marketing is heading.

Start your BMW and instead of your navigation you get a banner for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tap it and the center screen plays a full-screen movie ad - with music, an ambient light show and a release-date end card. BMW pushed this to cars built after July 2020 running Operating System 7, 8, 8.5, 9 or X, in more than 70 countries, from July 27 to August 10.

BMW's own press release calls it "a special surprise" and a "festive animation". The Autopian confirmed it with BMW, which said it is "part of a broader brand partnership with the film" - the iX3 even appears in the movie. So the promotion is a paid advertisement, displayed on hardware you already paid for, and BMW describes it as a gift.

Be very critical about what this actually is, because it is not a harmless movie tie-in.

First, the broken promise. In December 2023 BMW executive Stephan Durach said the company had no interest in selling space on in-car screens because the cabin is "a private space". That was the official line. Less than three years later BMW is using the same screens, via OTA update, to show commercials. The "private space" claim was never a principle. It was a position BMW held until someone offered money.

Second, the pattern. Heated seats as a subscription, abandoned after backlash. A monthly fee to use the adaptive suspension that is already installed. A monthly fee for the 360-degree camera that is already in the car. Now dashboard ad inventory. Every single one of these is the same move: find something the customer already owns and charge for it again, or rent it to a third party. The Spider-Man banner costs owners nothing, but it establishes the exact precedent BMW says it would never set - that the dashboard is available for advertising.

Third, the precedent is the real product here. The ad disappears on August 10, but the infrastructure does not. BMW now has a proven, OTA pipeline that can push promotional content into millions of cockpits overnight. This campaign is a movie promo that happens to be fun. The next one could be a dealership service push, a financing offer, or a third party that paid for your attention while you drive. You bought a $61,500 car, pay over a thousand dollars a month for it, and the automaker still treats your screen as inventory it can monetize. Even websites give you an ad-free option for a fraction of a car payment. BMW offers you a banner and a marketing team that calls it a surprise.

This is where the industry is heading - Stellantis already does in-car ads - and BMW is not resisting it, it is leading it. The dark plan is simple: the car stops being a product you buy and becomes a platform that keeps generating revenue after the sale, forever, with the owner as the audience. Nothing about that is in the consumer's favor. A "festive animation" is how they sell the idea that your own dashboard is no longer yours.

And that, that is the truth. Thanks Devii, nice critical article.

haha, This can escalate way more. Imagine the car pulls over and you have to watch an add to continue XD

If you have the cheapest version of the car, you need to watch a 120-second ad before it will start.

It's a surprise.

The car logs everything, so it registers that you were watching an ad during the accident - and the insurance company says bye.

I know a girl that switches lakes every time she adjusts the radio. Imagine if she has to click advertisements away - total dystopia. Maybe this is a moment that EU has to step in and make cars a no go zone for ads. I mean, you're literally sacrificing safety for revenue in the worst way. This will maybe do more harm than the seat belt even prevented.

Disgusting

If the Chinese just don't that, they could even win the car competition. And they're already going hard. I did read some very critical articles about the car industry. Germany is still a bit conservative and is basically building the same cars but with an electric motor now while they should be way more customised. But as former audi driver (almost every common brand BTW, I worked for years for Dutch biggest b2b car trader with benefits) I am sure that they won't have that quality yet. It really feels good. Even the vw UP! Has a steady quality that the other microcars didn't have. A vw up feels more than the big cactus.

Nah, she doesn't listen very well, I raised my voice several times.

Fun personal story: I lived with her in a dorm. I had a fight with her and she started to shower every day five minutes before me. At a certain point, after a week, I just opened the door and threw her out. The situation ended with her publishing the situation on FB. While the story is absolutely bizarre, no comment on Facebook or whatsoever πŸ˜‚ Imagine getting thrown naked out of a shower and you're such a terrible bitch that nobody is even a bit surprised. The ignored Facebook post was the nicest part of the whole situation.

End of personal story. She was warned at least five times.
