I can’t code without dead silence. I cannot concentrate on coding whatsoever unless there is dead silence in my house which leads me to usually coding in the middle of the night so I don’t hear people. Then I lose sleep and I lose my health. Anyone else?

Noise cancelling headphones and working from home helps me

Anechoic chamber! Or just a soundproof room. A thing used by musicians and voice actors to record things without echo. It can be done for cheap by soundproofing an existing room with foam panels.

Proper ones are the quietest places on earth. I’ve once been in a studio room like that, and the complete silence felt… heavy. I didn’t feel good there. It was hard to concentrate and enjoy playing guitar, but I’m autistic, I often fidget with things, I like cafes and huge cities. It seems like my brain needs a lot of noise to be productive.

People who experienced real scientific anechoic chambers report that the loudest noise there is hearing your own pulse and your blood flowing in your veins. You don’t have to go to such extremes, just buy some studio panels and hang them in your room.

About noise cancelling headphones. If you don’t listen to music and just want noise cancellation, maybe try active gun range hearing protection headphones. They’re noise cancelling too. Or just any modern construction headphones with batteries. I feel like they should cancel the noise better, though I never tried them.
