I don't think they really knew what they were creating.

If they knew how much misery it would bring to people, they probably wouldn’t have invented it. Just like with javascript.

The people that paid them to build it sure did. I think it would be naive to think that at least some of the people building it weren't excited to see their work put to use.

@retoor yeah every horrific invention has its good sides. The atomic bomb brought us nuclear power. AI brought us chat bots. And JS brought us json.
