Rant && story time
When I was in first grade of high school (age of 15) we had a class of informatics. Nothing unusuall, you say, but this teacher was ummm ... Let's just say special. Most of his classes looked like this:
TEACHER: Ok, class, today we are going to learn/work with <insert a name of a software here>. # And then he sat behind his desk, falling silent for the rest of the lesson. We had to look up the software ourselves, and learn to use it. Or not.
Next lesson, he just said:
TEACHER: Continue your work from the last time.
And on the third lesson of each cycle, there was grading in place. He walked through the class and if he saw you working with the software, you got a 5 (that is A for our western friends), but if you were doing something completely different, you got a 1 (that is F). That just ment that you had to open the program and wave the mouse around while he was looking at your screen, and you got a guaranteed 5.
And then the cycle repeated.
However, this is not the story about the teacher in general, it's a story about one specific event involving him.
Around the beginning of the year (calendar one, not school one; that is middle of the school year) a programming competition took place.
The first stage (school competition), was easy; I got 45 points out of 50 (I was second-best on the whole school, of all years (students from 15 to 20 years of age).
A few weeks later, second stage (national competition) took place. However, when I got to the registration dosk, things got weird.
I patiently waited in line, but when I got to the front, the assistant asked me for year and school.
ME: I come from SCHOOL_NAME and go to first year.
ASSISTANT1: All students who go to SCHOOL_NAME need to go to that separate line.
It seemed strange, but I walked over anyhow. Maybe there was enough students from our school so that new line opened for us.
ME: I go to first year. # I assumed I don't have to tell the name as the line was only for our school.
ASSISTANT2: Ok, but you need to go to that row. *points to the row wherexI just came from* # WTF is going on now?
ME: Ummm, I just came from there, and they told me to come here.
ASSISTANH2: Oh, you go to SCHOOL_NAME?
ME: Yeah
ASSISTANT2: Ok then. What is your name? # Thank Knuth, one mistery less
ME: My name is SELF.NAME
After a short search through the envelopes:
ASSISTANT2: Here you go # Both the fact that my name was completely misspeled and the procedure it took us to finally get to the correct envelope are a story for a different time.
Skip forward some 10 minutes, to the lecture hall where they just told us all the instructions and started to divide us into classrooms
ASSISTANT3:
for CLASSROOM, STUDENT_LIST in STUDENT_DIVISION:
for STUDENT in STUDENT_LIST:
STUDENT.invite(CLASSROOM)
At the end, only a few people, including me, remained.
ASSISTANT3: Is there anyone not from SCHOOL_NAME? # Umm, yeah, WTF is going on now?
Noone replied.
ASSISTANT3: OK, you all, come with me now, we will find you a classroom.
From there on, competition went fine, I came in second, got a new phone as a prize, no complaints.
However, later on, I realized what was the reason for all that weird behaviour.
Signup date for the second part was on LAST_SIGNUP_DATE, which was at least two weeks before the competition, and signups had to be done untill 1600 that day.
Our teacher signed us up at 2200. ON THE FUCKING DAY BEFORE THE COMPETITION. OF COURSE THEY HAD NOTHING PLANNED FOR US, NO ENVELOPES, NO COMPUTERS, NOTHING, IF WE WERE SIGNED UP LESS THAN FUCKING 12 HOURS BEFORE THE COMPETITION INSTEAD OF 2 WEEKS EARLIER. THE ONLY REASON WE GOT TO COMPETE WAS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DIDN'T SHOW UP AND WE USED THE PC'S MENT FOR THEM. IF EVERYONE SHOWED UP WE FUCKING COULDN'T COMPETE.
And from that moment on, I always signed myself up for all of the competitions; better safe than sorry.rant lazy fuck. last minute competition signups you thought you knew what last-minute means? high school teacher2 -
My dev skills currently feel like England in the mid 1600's.
Everyone around me has already conquered some projects while I sit in the side fighting a civil war with myself while having very humble accomplishments.
But I'll show them. I'll show them all. While they grow weak and weary over the ages, I'm slowly but surely getting stronger.
In the end I will conquer and rule the waves like no other. I will build a dev empire that will be remembered for years to come.3 -
Finally getting some upgrades for our office workstations!!
My work-pc still rocks 3rd gen core i7 with -40% performance loss because of spectre/meltdown patches and 1600 mhz ram. Its been a huge pain in the ass. Building unreal engine from source literally takes a day, while on my home Ryzen 5 it takes an our.
Ryzen 7/9 babyyy!!!
(I might even be able to talk them into a threadripper, wish me luck 😀)

Got a job offer. Pays more than my current job (~13% increase) and allows me to commute. However, less freedoms. This is weird to me - the job is for a small firm (20 employees), and my current is huge (~25-30k). Now I can work from home when I need it, and flexible hours (aka, get in whenever I feel like it). New job had in contract "No remote working" and "Work hours are 0800-1600".
Think I'm gonna turn em down.. Fuck being locked down like that, honestly.15 -
Highschool teacher tells us to work on a little text game, gives us 2 weeks. I wrote about 1600 lines of code with enemys, random map, fighting system,... And generally blowing everything out of proportion as always, because I'm so bored4

>Gets a new CPU for desktop (yay, went from R5 1600 to R5 3600X)
>Spends half a day flashing new MB BIOS (Needed to flash individual major versions in order, couldn't just go 1.10 to 6.40)
>Finally finishes preparations and goes to replace the CPU
>Cleans the old one and packages it to give it to a friend
>Has issues inserting the new one as the orientation arrow on the motherboard was very hard to make out
>Spends 30 minutes applying thermal paste, worrying about optimal spread
>Forgets which side the CPU fan goes on
>Finally boots back up... CPU fan is suddenly loud AF under load, but eh, temps under stress are sub-60, so, good
~~Next day~~
>Loud CPU fan is too annoying, opens the case again
>CPU fan is on backwards
Ugh
>Takes the fan off, turns it around and fastens again, puts PC back together and boots
>Is quiet again, nice
>Goes to work on the PC
>2 hours later randomly checks temps because no fan noise is weird
>CPU at 75dC, crap
>Opens the (live) PC, CPU fan is not spinning
>Has put the header on one pin to a side
>Unplugs and replugs it correctly
>Fan suddenly starts spinning very fast and cuts my finger
>Finally closes the case once more. All issues resolved
...Its situations like these that make me wonder... What would happen it I had to work with servers in person, physically lol5 -
Finally bought a macbook for my android app development. Paid 1600 EUR for 2015 MID mbpro with 512GB SSD, 16gb ram, 2.5ghz quad core i7 cpu and dedicated gpu. I know I overpaid but I couldnt fkin stand working on windows anymore. I spent one year with fcking windows building android apps. Making apps on windows is fking impossible. And dont even get me started on new crap macbooks starting from 2016 :/19

Most useless premium laptop feature: touch screen.
For my new Lenovo I saved hundreds of dollars because I opted for the second best screen option. Lower resolution WQXGA (2560 x 1600) 165Hz, beacuse the 4K touch enabled fancy schmancy screen of my current Dell XPS 15 has barely been used. I keep Outlook open on it FFS, and I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have used the touch feature 😖
Is it just me?8 -
Macbook or Microsoft Notebook?
I have a budget of 1600€.
I need it for developing mainly c# and web-dev.17 -
Currently reading through a long GitHub issue thread. For some reason people started quoting the entire message they are replying to.
The last post has 9 nested messages and the quote section is 1600 pixels tall. Who needs @mentions anyways.5 -

Been struggling with a performance issue for weeks, been writing a search engine (or sorts) for internal company use only. Discovered the locations that are being indexed contain a directory used for back up purposes that contain archives of everything inside it.
Wrote a means to exclude these directories, performance improves up to 1600% (top end, sadly, not across the board) feel freaking awesome.
Boss acts like I've just pull Atlantis off the floor with my teeth.
It was a two line change, I wish the really difficult tasks were treated this way and not with "oh it shouldn't take you long!"1 -
I'm addicted to world of warships right now😫
Which game you guys plays a lot ?
Used to play cs 1.6 a lot too 😝
Yeah I know 1600 BC Game but it's still really fun😄15 -
Last weekend I visited my aunt for her birthday. Someone reminded me of the passion for chess one of my smaller cousins had
(they grow so fast, I finally understood all those remarks from the grandmas back then 🥲)
and asked if he wanted to play a few rounds. Sure damn he wanted to, because he whipped out that chessboard like a gunslinger I tell you
I wonder why everyone looked at me in such pity, and I found out why soon enough: turns out in all the years, he’s competing in country championships and now has an ELO of around 1600. Every match felt like being a fly in a venus trap. I was losing and I didn’t even know why. The grip became tighter while I was burning my neurons on some sugar. That was very uncomfortable. At least, reading from his face, he had fun, and I learnt some Turkish Kebap Defense variant lol -
So, idk if I told you guys yet but I'm a web dev intern.
Recently the company I work at doubled in size and so this was the result...
Here's what my weekend looked like:
Friday:
0830: Math exam at school
1005: Get on the public transportation
1100: Arrived at internship
1130: Get started on setting up 8 new PC's
/*realize I have to do them one by one, clean window installation, office, updates, and some random software. Internet connection sucks, so one PC at a time it is.*/
2130: bus ride home.
Saturday:
0900: Get on public transportation to work
1000: Arrive and start finishing up PC's
1600: Start moving old pc's to new room and install new pc's
2130: Get on bus ride home
Sunday:
0830: Get call from second job asking me to do some stuff.
1100: be done with second job
1400: Get on public transport to work
1500: start cleaning up old pc's for reuse
2130: Go home
And today we finished installing everything.
I've spend 17 hours of my weekend at internship. Guess who's taking Wednesday and Friday off? -
"Can't you just write an if so the failing queue kinda restarts and processes the disappearing job when the bug occurs?"
No, you dense fuck. We've been over this every time you bring up this rotten, diseased garbage of a project. The queue does not work because the project was developed with a PHP version that was already EOL at the time, in an old framework that was also EOL at the time by the way, surely because someone told the brainless intern to "just copy paste from another project and change a couple of stuff" probably (that wouldn't be you? No? You sure?) and the queue fails because of a bug with the framework itself and I am NOT going to waste my time trying to decipher what the fuck this c programmer was trying to achieve with these 1600 lines of code in a single method. Yes I've seen the flowchart. No it still makes no fucking sense.
It reads from a csv. Updates some mysterious and undocumented mongodb collections. Some mysql tables as well. It also updates some fucking text files for good measure too. Text files. Oh, and It also connects to a third party API and does even more changes based on the responses. There are PHP IIFEs all over the place. Property names so short you'd think we were trying to save up on space but that clearly isn't the case, is it?
And am I expected to somehow unfuck this while babysitting the rest of the devs, write some fucking documents so that you can justify asking for more money because of your own technical debt fuckups, handle nearly all deployments, unfuck more doomed projects that were never stable or documented?
Can't wait to leave this shithole of a company. You can't attract talent. You can't retain talent and you actually made all the competent devs quit with your bullshit.
Now I'm the only senior, tech lead, devops, sysadmin and you want me to take on pm duties as well since the other pm left? Fuck. Right. Off.11 -
Alright dev's, I have pretty much given up on ChromeOS and Chromebooks, my Samsung Chromebook Plus is far from the rock solid stable and battery sipping champion it used to be, constantly crashing, sluggish, 4 hours of battery at most, terrible android performance and the list goes on (Plus fucking bullshit Pixel device exclusive features can fuck off)
I use my Macbook Pro more than ever but the lack of being able to install Linux is a massive blow, so I'm looking for some laptop recommendations and here are the criteria.
1. Don't want a tablet
2. Prefer a clamshell but will deal with a convertibal
3. Max price of $1000 AUD (~$4.25 USD)
4. If it has dedicated graphics, prefer AMD
5. Prefer windows to not be pre-installed but can deal with it if it is
Was previously looking at the XPS line but um... Base model 13 inch is ~$1600 AUD so nope .-.
Fire away people!4 -
Project Manager: "You have until x date, but how far off are you from finishing"
Me: "How long is it until x date, there is your answer"

I am an stupid human being. How many times should I experience the same problem to learn from it? I don’t know why should I possibly be obsessed by latest MacOS updates? This fucking error ruined my day. Those fucking idiot coders in Apple must use some unit tests (including transparent iTerm in second display). Fuck you all. My £1600 Macbook pro is literally useless until some fucking coder finds what is wrong in their NEW update.

I learned Git in the most ridiculous way possible.
Noob me, is using VSCode and i tried clicking the git icon. Now, i didn't know what i was doing and i suddenly made a git repo and i just checked on things (add changes and commit) and little do i know that it was all absorbed. I got skeptical (spying on files, i didn't know what's happening, etc.) so i clicked the "x" button and it warned me that it will be "completely deleted" and it will be an "irreversible action". Due to my stupidity, i pressed okay.
Then that was the time i knew, i fucked up.
But hey ho it took me 12 hrs to recover all files (1600 loose objects) that has been deleted using a 3rd party app (without any master, no last commit message, no everything, just objects a.k.a the blob files that git saves). I tried looking for easier ways to get the files, but it was there in front of me the whole time, so it took me longer.4 -
> "You don't need to film in 4K if you don't have a 4K screen!"
Besides the obvious fact that one might own a 4K screen in future, 4K (2160p) looks better than Full HD (1080p) on a 1600×900 "HD+" screen! It looks pure and clear thanks to higher bitrate and chroma subsampling.
What? You didn't know almost all consumer video cameras, including smartphones, record with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, meaning 1080p video only has 540p of colour information? It has 1080p of luminance, but not 1080p of colour.8 -
What is a good ultrabook laptop for about $1600, more or less?
I am currently looking at the Gigabyte Aero 14 and the Dell XPS 15
Any advice will be welcome3 -
When you start using Android ButterKnife and you realise that @BindView(R.id.best_text) TextView bestText; is alot nicer to write than TextView bestText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.best_text);
-
With a 1600$ budget what laptop would you get? I've been using Mac OS for 6 years and I like it. But now it's time for a laptop upgrade and I can't decide. :D14

So today I wanted to keep going in my project, did nothing in the morning had to do market and came back tired (didn't sleep enought last night) so tried to rest (couldn't because had to help in the kitchen with the lunch), had lunch then take a nap, nap evolved to a nice sleep, woke up @1600, got out to deliver a ddr3, came back @1700, wife asked to get burguers for dinner... went to buy dinner, watched a movie (gold) has sex... and now I'm writing this rant'... so coded nothing... now I'm playing bf4 just because fuck it I'm not sitting in my desktop now....
So have you ever wanted to do something in your project and couldn't because external reasons didn't allow you?5 -
Some developers just want to annoy other developers
`var IS_DEV = true
if(!IS_DEV) {
//do stuff for production
} else {
//do stuff for dev
}`
Why don't you just do `if(IS_DEV)`...

We are switching our frontend templating language from dust.js to twig.js... Today I converted 1600 lines of dust to twig.
Do you know the feeling, when you're so hungover that if you see just a single drop of alcohol you have to throw up? I feel the same way about dust right now.1
