When I came to this new workplace I was given a Windows laptop. And it came with a bunch of pre-installed corporate stuff and policies like automatic mandatory frequent driver and windows updates. Although I prefer linux, I thought, maybe I'll switch later, first let's see how everything works here, since on Windows I had all VPNs, certificates and other corpo stuff pre-configured out of the box. But imagine missing a standup, because of windows update in the morning. Or missing audio, because of drivers update in the middle of the meeting. And make it every week or so. Also, I couldn't not install my portable DAC drivers, because limited access, blah blah fuck me. And many other small things that I vaguely remember by now.
Later corpo decided to add a tracking plugin into a browser and that was it for me. Gladly, corpo policy allows using Linux (they have their own modified Ubuntu version), which has MUCH less of this crap. I mean, it's still somewhat managed by corpo (like I can't get rid of duplicated PPA, lol.. and sometimes I need to wait like 1-2 mins to login to my laptop because of login server timeout), but that's still better...

You are student or whatever and work in small company. Thats where lot of people are stuck. Like me. Pay is... Sigh. When you hear dev can earn more than 1k$/mo its like "yes, yes, gimme, gimme". Forget about beeing just dev. If I left my company it would collapse within week, but bosses greed is insanity. Oh well.

Than you have that middleground that I would love to be in. Freelancing. Here freelancers can live really well if they can find contractors willing to pay for their services. Wuthin this space there is most profit but also that uncertanity. But its my goto.

Than you have miniscule group you **really** want to be in, medium companies writing software, usually b2b. Well, here you get often 2k$+ and bonuses for working your ass off etc, and benefits are minor but there is usually *something*

And than you have corporations. They often pay a lot, lot of benefits, but.... Its corporation, all ypu learned in small companies usually goes through the window, their expectations are high etc.

In my country everything is like everywhere else but pay is much less, especially in small company space, and somewhat smallish in medium company/corpo. Freelancers are least affected.

Because of all the injustice done to a regular folk by the banks and megacorporations, as well as the parts of government that value those two higher than doing the right thing for the regular people, piracy is all but justified.

For me, piracy is the default option. When it comes to stuff made by a megacorp, the first thing I do is see if I can pirate that. I would argue that piracy should be the default option for everyone.

No, you're not depriving corpo staff/hires of their salaries by pirating. If a megacorp is not paying them, it's not your fault.

I only pay for content if I want to support the creators. I was pirating since I got my first computer, I do pirate right now, and I will pirate in the future. I will advocate for piracy.

Looking at vacancies and the JS build tools asked (Babel, Gulp) and then visiting their websites I notice that I don't understand what they are going on about.

The "get started" page expects you already know npm, typescript, and when you look at their pages, well... Where does the circlejerk end and the actual Javascript start?

unfortunately, iCloud's "hide my mail" available for as low as $1.19/mo is the best email aliases service. Why? Because those addresses have no discernible pattern, and, most importantly, end with @icloud-dot-com.

a lot of services nowadays think aliases are for scammers, so they reject well-known alias domains like those proton has. but no one rejects icloud ones.

they can't wrap their head around that people like me use aliases, one alias per service, to have control over the spam you send us. unsubscribe buttons in emails often don't work, or unsubscribe you from some super-niche "segment" that one email belonged to, but because you bitches have a lot of those segments, you just carry on spamming.

major dicks that aren't concerned with email deliverability rating, like microsoft — because their emails get delivered no matter what, they're microsoft after all — think they can just not allow people to unsubscribe from their spam. when I needed to create a ms account, thank god I used an alias. I got bombarded with their spam, and lo and behold, not a single email had an unsubscribe button. Instead, the bottom of each email said "this email is a part of mandatory onboarding" or some shit like that, despite just being advertisement. no option to unsubscribe from that bs in their "dashboard" either.

so I just disabled that alias. despite what all of you stupid fucks want, it's my computer, and on it, the computing happens on my terms. when I need a confirmation email, I enable the alias, get the email and then disable it.

I have no mics and no cameras. I pay cash. I don't borrow money from banks. I don't have a credit card. when I receive crypto, I exchange it for cash directly in a physical crypto exchange that doesn't require my passport. I have headphones with built-in mic that I use exclusively for calls, but when I plug them out, no mic for ya. my next phone won't have a sim (and no eSIM either), I will disassemble it and take the front-facing cam, as well as mics, out of the phone, and then cover the back camera with velcro that I'll undo every time I need to take a pic. it will also run graphene os and be held inside a faraday cage when not in use. I have a separate dumb phone for calls that has its removable battery disconnected at all times when I don't use it. no matter if you're corpo or government, no matter all zero-days and backdoors, if there is physically no mic and no cam to be found, trying to access them is futile.

I was wondering if anybody working for a larger Company in 3rd-Level faces the same personal problems as me?

We got alot of our own developed software and process. Regulary some Keyuser fucks something up by importing something wrong, which skews the master data. Its intended to be managed by the Keyuser.

Fast Forward, my Keyusers are so dumb, that they fuck up the master data import wrongfully. The process behind that then have wrong Data to operate (a numeric value neeeds to be set).

The Enduser then opens a Ticket for problem XYZ. Then the Keyuser forwards us the issue.

We already had that same issue X amount of times and its always the same reply. I made a FAQ, Knowledgebase entry, etc.

Nothing works, 2 weeks pass and a similiar tickets comes in...

I dig Debian so far. Here’s why I chose it:
- When something corpo doesn’t work on Arch, no one cares. But when it doesn’t work on Debian, it’s a big deal, and corpo people will be fixing it in no time. Good example is VSCod[e|ium] constantly crashing on Fedora: “it was fixed in kernel, all we have to do now is just wait for Fedora to catch up”.
- Complete and utter boringness/stability. When something breaks in Debian, it definitely broke for DenverCoder9 back in 2014 as well, and is easily fixable. You’re never the trailblazer, and with OS stuff that’s a good thing
- Complete and utter compatibility with everything. If you want to install/do X on Debian, someone else already did it and fixed everything for you
- Noble pedigree. “I use arch btw” is a running joke, but “oh, I use Debian” makes people respect your distro choice. Nobody hates Debian

One thing that transitioning people should know about GNU/Linux in general is that you shouldn’t try to replicate your previous experience with Windows/macOS in GNU/Linux.
GNU/Linux is a go kart, or a hot rod. You have to be involved. You have to be ready to tinker/fix things.
But one good thing about hot rods is that if you drive one, CIA can’t kill you with a remote car hack.

Tl;Dr: Would my salary sugesstion be alright? Will get a promotion. Currently salary 115k $. I would suggest between 135k - 150k $ annual salary

So I work at a large Corpo and was asked by my department Boss, if I want to take a Promotion in our Applications team as Technical Lead. I would have the same Job, but will be the Service Owner and lead the team on a functional base. Would be 5 People. Personal Leadership would still be trough my superior.

Im alright with that, I currently dont want to lead people, but teaching them how to do it like I do right now is fine with me. Also most of the time when Shit hits the Fan Im on the call already to fix a critical Bug.

I trust my boss alot and was always treated fair by her. My currently salary is at 115k annual and Im 29 years old.

Currently Im studying on my Science BSc and work fulltime. I will take the promotion, because its like already now too my Job, I get payd better and not some random pen pusher will be set infront of me.

Also I could deny now all the fuck ups our Business People decide in Projects. I would have a lever more to challenge. (Parry this Peasant 🤣)

Just jumping from 115k up is my mental Challenge. I first thought about just 124k, but the responsibility is alot (Business Critical Applications). Also on the Job Market the Peers are ranging from 140k - 160k.

Im always thinking about the say, you need to be greedy sometimes yourself if its justified. Else some Manager gonna cash in the slip.

Should I suggest 135k or by your experience would you advertise higher like 145k-150k?
