I give up. It‘s impossible to argue with Apple.
I tried to bring my unofficial iOS devRant app "JoyRant" into the AppStore. It was available via TestFlight for years and it wasn‘t a problem there, apparently. Now for the AppStore, it is a problem.
I talked with the Apple review team for 3 weeks and the discussion went in circles.
They said that my app tries to disguise as or to misrepresent another app on the store (the official devRant app, even though it‘s not available anymore, apparently).
I was asked to remove all of the mentions of devRant from any description or any place in the app. I did. Even though it was stupid because how are people supposed to know that they need a devRant account to use my app? I‘m not allowed to mention devRant.
After that, they said that it can not have the name JoyRant because it sounds too similar to devRant.
I changed it to devJoy everywhere, the app, the meta data for the app store, the github page where the required legal crap is hosted, and in the legal documents themselves.
Did it help? No, it didn‘t.
Apple then proceeded to claim that my app is trying to deceive the users into thinking that this is the official devRant app. Even though I have explicitly stated in the description that it is just an unofficial devRant client.
Now apple says that I should "revise the app content".
Which I assume means that I need to make it something different. Yeah. Great suggestion!
So, I will rename the app back to JoyRant and provide it via TestFlight, as it was before.
Thanks for reading. I needed to vent.31 -
Are devrant servers dying? Algo sorting doesn’t load more rants and recents sorting is kinda wonky.
I tried official devrant app on ios and joyrant with same results.
This is kind of a test if I can still rant or not.11 -
New JoyRant build (38) with a new feature:
Every user that you see in a rant will be stored in a list which can be used for @mentioning and viewing the profile.
https://devrant.molodetz.nl/IMG_529...
https://devrant.molodetz.nl/IMG_529...
https://devrant.molodetz.nl/IMG_529...
https://devrant.molodetz.nl/IMG_529...
Sometimes you just don‘t remember the exact name of a user and hopefully this feature will help.
It might also be a nice summary of how many users are active.14 -
I’m currently working on the profile view in JoyRant, which turns out to be much more work than I thought.
Anyway, after many iterations on the appearance, I’m now finally satisfied about how it looks and works. Especially the category picker (Rants, ++’s, Comments, Favorites).
What do you think? Do you like it?4 -
JoyRant build 17:
I’ve added the Weekly stuff to the app:
Browse weekly group rants and see the weekly topic of a rant.
Have fun 😊

JoyRant build 19 has a new feature:
A Community Projects page, based on the json api by @joewilliams007
https://github.com/joewilliams007/...
I was inspired by the implementation of that page in skyRant and made a similar one which can be searched and filtered by type and os. 🙂

Code block highlighting is probably coming next.7 -
It’s so sad that this “Auth for Google authenticator” app whose logo definitely doesn’t try to impersonate google with a similar color scheme, with in-app purchases, is allowed to exist, while Lensflare’s JoyRant isn’t.15

New JoyRant TestFlight build 11:
* Posting Rants
* Improved Notifications Category selection UI with unread indicators (screenshot attached)
Posting this rant from JoyRant right now 😄
The app is now in a state what I consider to be the first major milestone.
There are still features missing (see github https://github.com/WilhelmOks/...) but the most important and most frequently used stuff is done.
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...3 -
I just released JoyRant build 30 with some improvements:
* fixed user-mention text insertion for iOS 18
* improved text selection in rants and comments to make it easier to quote specific parts of comments. See screenshot.

I'm curious to know who uses JoyRant here.
I can see 48 users in TestFlight but there are probably many duplicates.5 -
I‘m thinking about running my own spam downvoting bots based on the so far very successful spam detection in JoyRant.
*successful in terms of detection accuracy.
@retoor how frequently do you need to create new bots?
How quicky do they lose downvote privileges?
Other useful things to know?
Also, I haven’t seen you recently, since you deleted your account. How are you doing?11 -
JoyRant build 40
* Added spam detection!
* Fixed weird black background in encountered users view
* Fixed aspect ratio of placeholder user image
Spam is detected using a spam score system.
Specific words and patterns increase the score and once a threshold is reached, the rant is considered spam.
In the feed spam rants will be less visible (max 3 lines of text, smaller and half transparent text and no images) but you can still open the rant (maybe to check the full rant to see if it is really spam) and downvote.
This can be disabled in Settings but is enabled by default.
It’s phase 1 of the spam related feature.
I will approach phase 2 later since it‘s low priority for me.
Feel free to contribute to the spam detection config file via PR:

JoyRant build 18
I fixed a bug which would "break" links when editing a rant or a comment.
The links broke because devRant shortens them.
So now I’m "resolving" them by replacing the short links with the full links when editing.
Here I used the good old trick to start from the end and replace in reverse so that the ranges don’t get messed up with multiple links. 🙂

JoyRant build 24:
* @mentions from the keyboard suggestions are now inserted at the text cursor instead of at the end of the text.
* max height of 1000 points for image previews, to counter large image spam by people like ostream.
TestFlight:

JoyRant build 14:
New big feature: User Profiles!
You know how it works: Tap on a user and it will open the Profile View with all of the related user info and functions.
Only "Subscribe to User" is missing but it will be added later.
Other changes:
* Support for other image types like WEBP for upload
* Fixed notification badge autoupdate
* Improved Notifications View by not blocking when switching categories
* and many other improvements in functionality and style

Next big Feature will be weekly rant topics.4 -
I had to rename my unofficial devRant client SwiftUIRant due to some concerns from Apple regarding the term Swift in the app name. 🙄
Well, it’s JoyRant now. 😁
And there is a new test version in TestFlight:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
* External links in rants and comments open the URL in the browser.
* Rant links in rants and comments open the rant in the app.
Enjoy testing and let me know what you think about the app! ☺️6 -
JoyRant new version:
* delete rant
* selectable text in rants and comments
* proper badge on Notifications tab, showing number of unread notifications!
* mention suggestions for comments!
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
Here is a screenshot of the mention suggestions above the keyboard:
It collects all the user names from the comments, except for the user of the rant’s author and the logged in user.
Have fun 😄
I think posting rants will be next.12 -
JoyRant build 12:
* Copy Rant Link
* Customize Accent Color
That’s right! You can pick your favorite color as the accent color of JoyRant in the settings.
The new ColorPicker in SwiftUI is really great!5 -
Is the search function useless?
I tried it in the official devRant app because I consider adding it to JoyRant.
But it never finds anything relevant for me.
Even if I give it an exact substring of a comment, it doesn’t find it.
It also doesn’t find users (which would be useful)
Does it only work for the text in a rant?
Do you find it useful?6 -
JoyRant build 16 after some development pause.
Added "Subscribe to User" function in a User’s Profile.
Fixed links which are at the end of a rant or comment. The devRant link system is very weird.

I plan to implement the weekly stuff next. -
JoyRant new TestFlight build 10
Images and gifs are fully functional now! 😄
What’s new:
* Images can be tapped to be shown in fullscreen, zoomable and can be saved
* Gif animations can be uploaded and played in fullscreen
* updating notifications when app becomes active
https://testflight.apple.com/join/... -
Just had an idea for a feature in JoyRant.
Collect all usernames encountered in rants and comments and store them.
Make a button to present a list of all of the users so that a @mention can be added in the text.
Sometimes I forget the exact names of users and I think this would help finding them.
What do you think?2 -
Yo @Lensflare, JoyRant beta expired again. It says I should update my iOS to 17 to continue testing, but my phone only supports 16. What should I do?39
-
Lensflare, look at how those lines in between menu elements don’t protrude all the way to the left edge, instead stopping before icons, so there is no line in between icons. Telegram uses the same UI pattern for “all chats” screen, and it looks good. What about using it in JoyRant in notifications screen?3
-
Thanks for your feedback for JoyRant, kiki!
I read it just now because I’m too lazy to read my private emails regularly 😅
The "in the settings" grammar will be fixed in the next version.
Image placeholder is squashed to 1:1 ratio, yes. I see it as a non issue though 😅.
It wouldn’t be too much work to fix it but… meh.
I don’t know why the images stay placeholders though. Never happened to me.
In your screenshot I see that you have Flight mode on, maybe that’s the reason?
You can also try to clear the image cache in (the) settings.8 -
I was thinking about how to best approach the spam detection in JoyRant and it kinda escalated into a separate project:
https://github.com/WilhelmOks/...
This is a generic swift lib for spam detection, which I will be using in JoyRant.
The idea is that it can be used by other devrant clients, even android, or backends or anti spam bots like those from @retoor.
Or even in completely other communities… like snek maybe? I don’t know, the point is it’s generic and not specific to devRant.
And the config with the spam detection rules can be a hosted json file, accessed via a http URL.
This will make it easy for me to update the rules and easy for you to contribute to the rules, if you wish to do so :)
My plan is to first implement a simple version of spam detection and release a new JoyRant version.
Then later implement the whole thing with stuff like marking as spam, marking as not spam, exported details about detections to be used to improve on the rules, and blackjack and hookers.
Fuck spam and the human garbage that is posting it or is behind the spam bots!
From the bottom of my heart, Fuck you!1 -
I have finished my project for a new devrant sdk in swift:
https://github.com/WilhelmOks/...
(Yes, the readme is missing and I will add it later 😅)
And I built it into JoyRant (build 32), which required quite a bit of refactoring.
I think I tested everything but let me know if you find any problems.
You will need to logout and log in again.
The downvote reason feature isn‘t there yet (in JoyRant), but now I have a good basis to add it 😄
Yes, implementing a whole new SDK just for one little feature is overkill, but I had fun doing it and I wanted to have a nice, clean and extensible code base which I can work on in the future. 😌10 -
Kinda weird posting it directly after @OmerFlame but…
JoyRant has image upload now.
With image preview. Great idea, no worries about uploading your dick pics by accident, now. Forgot the name of the guy who suggested it 😄
And there is a macOS version in TestFlight, too.
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
Thanks to @OmerFlame for SwiftRant, btw! 😄1
