If you divide an integer with two over and over again, you will get closer and closer to 0, but you will never reach it.
Kind of the same feeling as watching your rant gain more and more ++'s, but never hitting that magical 300.11 -

Am so fricking happy right now. Last year I posted a screenshot of one my apps hitting over 10k downloads. Well today i woke up and another one of my apps has over 12k monthly active users too. Feeling like a champion!

We work in a field full of pretentious bitches, messed up egos, and fucking over inflated titles.10

When I was younger I would start ironing a shirt poorly knowing full-well my mother would see me doing it badly and take over to do it properly.
Karma is a bitch. Now my colleagues ask me over for help and I normally end up taking over control of their pc to rewrite shit. I swear they do it on purpose.4 -
I've been looking at the shittiest code today. Hundreds of lines saying
this.thing.otherThing.EvenAnotherThing[this.someFuckingIndexThatShouldntBeAField].theOnlyBitThatsDifferentPerLine.AlsoNoneOfTheNamesWereThisMeaningful
Over and over. They're all wider than the editor window. Clearly copy pasted. Just make a fucking variable Jesus Christ how do you expect anyone to read that2 -
So I'm a backend engineer and my boss keeps telling me I over engineer stuff. I'm never given a technical spec or architectural spec, just told what to do so I build. But apparently I over engineer? Admittedly I do tend to but recently I cba and done the most basic thing. Apparently its over engineered.
Would you agree that to say something is over engineered a technical requirements document is required in order to specify over engineered said request needs to be?
Ps: my boss is an inappropriate cunt. Finally got that out.
Feel like hes just making arguments with me to get rid of me because I didnt want to cuddle in bed with him after he gave me an uncalled for back rub..14 -
Computer science doesn't just mean teach me how to use Microsoft office over and over... MS Access is not useful!!!5

You know how people say insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? Those people have never done different things and gotten the same result.1

The graduate (who thinks he knows everything) who has spent the last 6 months asking the same question over and over ...Tells you he's going to be a game developer.4

I love it how managers try to act busy by going through the same mails over and over again while waiting for a new one so that they can instantly reply to it and show themselves off as "prompt" and screw us, who have to actually do some work, about not sending mails promptly and they have like this one single excel sheet opened at all times and they just make one obscure entry whenever they get an update and WOW, some of them don't even know how the fuck you spell Avro (spelt it as avero, handwritten) and oh, not to mention waste everyone's time by asking a mundane question that other managers are so eager to answer, one by one, over and over and did I mention THAT THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HALF THE PRODUCT.

Dear devRant:
What is your favourite color scheme?
I've been trying gruvbox over a month and I like the softer colors and the retro 70's feel. I had been on solarized for over 3 years before making the switch.
What do you like to use? Post screenshots!

Tru story:
We have a folder that we keep as shared documentation known as Javascript And PHP Fuckery made by yours truly in which I added a bunch of fixes to fuckery written in those 2 languages by previous developers.
The entire department has access to those files(as in all of IT) and I have been commended by the head of our department for my determination and uncanny ability to spot fuckery and fix it.
He says that he "thoroughly enjoys my colorful mastery of language, sarcasm and cognitive imagery when dealing with documentation regarding the code horrors done by previous developers"
By cognitive imagery he said that he meant my thought process and that he wouldn't trust a developer that does not use this language.
Fucking killing it b.
I'll let y'all(as in youse) when I am done with my Book(if anyone here steals the idea of the title as js php fuckery i am gonna sue you)1 -
Don't Repeat Yourself. Don't Repeat Yourself.
3 words you need to keep repeating over and over to colleagues that, well, keep repeating themselves in code.3 -
With every new Apple product it seems that Jony Ive's job is reading the dictionary and finding less and less understandable words to be used in the next commercial to make the production process seem more and more complex although the result is the same device over and over again.

So haven't been on devRant in awhile but it's a new year and I definitely have some new goals. For starters, I'm building my first LFS system (on phase 2 of my toolchain atm), which I thought would be way over my head. Apparently, all these arch experiences have paid off xD I've always wanted to truly understand what went on under the hood of linux and maybe after going through this over and over I'll at least understand a little more.

2022 Dev Goal: Find a way to retire early so I never have to build another website or write another line of code again. It’s been over 25 years and I’m just done and over it.11

ffmpeg...
I FUCKING LOVE YOU!!
I CAN JUST STACK THOSE FILTERS WITH NO RESTRICTIONS OVER AND OVER WITH DIFFERENT INPUTS AND OUTPUTS!!
Also: it fucking works with still images, AND IT’S FUCKING FAST!!
It’s around FOUR (4, DO YOU REALISE THE IMPROVEMENT) times faster to GAUSSIAN blur an image and then composite an image over it with ffmpeg, than to composite the image with imagemagick (no blurring)!!3 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.14 -
For the last 4-5 months the boss hasn't paid our wages complete. Since then he has promised over and over that he will pay all that he owes us, and we (most of us, anyway, the smart ones already leave) like fools believed in him.
The boss still is lying to us, the same lies over and over (i think he believes them himself)
YOU FOOL, NOBODY BELIEVES YOUR LIES, SHOW ME THE MONEY. DAMMIT!
I'll leave the job and very posibly sue him at the end of this month. Took me long enough. I'm not a smart man...5 -

I just took over a new project from a brand new client today. It's an Android app that he said needed some updates and refactoring, and he said it wasn't well documented but he would add some comments for me before giving me the code. He gave me access to the code today and one class in it is over 1200 lines long with exactly 4 methods in it... the shortest method is still over 200 lines long. There is one comment at the very top:
// Needs refactored.
... gee thanks.2 -
When the previous dev has written all datetime query lookups by date only, resulting in any values for the ladt day of the month to not be included.

Same wanker has copied and pasted same 100 lines of code over and over and literally changed one value in between. Obviously never heard of a function.3 -

Been away from here for over a year.
Tried meditation, tried working out, tried eating more #00FF00s.

I am honestly surprised in how many different ways C++, VS, and libraries are able to fail over and over and over again.
Fuck you C++ libraries

serious question - is a fucking project ever finished and put away or is it common in the dev world to redo the same fucking pointless shit over and over again?4

I kinda feel the pain of the developers over at Bungie. They just had over 15h downtime of Destiny 1 and 2 and had to stay up all night to fix it.

Manifesto for class naming
Through my work as a professional developer, I have come to value:
ComponentMapper over ComponentMappingService
TransactionalSequencer over TransactionalSequencingService
PayrollCsvGenerator over PayrollCsvService
InternalTestRunCreator over InternalService
Please people, just call them what they are. Forget the noise words and fluff. To quote Morpheus:

Honestly...I just make excuses to do stuff with Ruby 😂3 -
Don't get me wrong I love the weekly rants!
...but on mondays I just genuinely don't use devRant because reading about the same topic over and over again becomes boring so quickly.1 -
Fuck, today was a total shitshow. Every damn line of code I touched seemed to blow up in my face. Fucking bugs popping up left and right, and the deadline looming over my head like a goddamn guillotine. Today my wife mentioned divorce over dinner.5

worst part of programming is knowing what needs to happen, having an idea of the logic that needs to run, but having absolutely no idea how to get that logic implemented.
Been staring at my screen for 30 minutes at this point starting to type a function, then deleting it realizing that method won't work, trying another one before deleting that one as well, over and over and over again
I'm about to just close this damn thing and play Minecraft for an hour, maybe a mindless Minecraft break will help.2 -

“C# is not just an improvement over Java, it’s an improvement over all previous languages. And the C# team has done an excellent job of introducing new features without making the API ugly. C++ fails at this, as does Java.”3 -

!ran Why cant companies work with employees over skype and other software instead of everybody having to physically go to a workplace?
Wouldn't it be more convinient to just connect over such softwares, and share code over github and stuff?
Or what is the reason that companies want to have their employees in a building?
No workplace = less money spent?
I'm not in a job yet and have no experience out of highschool working else where.

So, there was this time I was a security intern for google, It was my first day as an intern tho :p and I got a little excited about exploring stuff and all at the workplace. Me having a large appetite was mesmerized by the food supplied over there.
I might have sat approximately 2 hours over there fantasizing about how much could I save over food by eating a lot over here and taking some to home.
Then came the SE/SDE guys over my place and we started discussing how there was a loophole here and how one could exploit it. All were heads over heels how was I making calculations for "my" property. All seemed to be pretty interested except for one guy. This guy was over excited how I was managing this and slacking off over the first day. He happened to be a senior lead architect, turns out he shows too much interest in anything he finds suspicious. This wasn't supposed to be rant, but yeah. My story. -
Honestly, nothing. I'm just a human. I know I will fail multiple times, over and over. I allow myself to do that, learning and taking precautions for each new failure.

What is your opinion on Agile?
I was studying through my textbook for a test tomorrow and the Agile Philosophy section sounded like a Team Rocket manifesto at some parts:
Responding to change over following a plan
Individuals and Interactions over processes and tooks
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation.4 -
Company: We have a new front-end project for you to work on.

Can anyone explain to me why facebook got pulled over for selling user data and google hasn't yet?5
-
When did you scrap your project and start over, and why?
I'm working on a second project at my company.
But as the project got longer and initially unplanned features started to pile up, the software has become a total mess and a pile of conversion layers for all sorts of I/O.
I'm starting to believe that it'd be better to learn from our mistakes and start over with a better plan, if it means we'll be able to achieve performance and stability improvements.
So, what was it like scrapping your project and starting over?2 -
when your IDE has so much funding and idle hands they make GUI facades over terminal functionalities
but then over time they keep releasing "features" for convenience that entirely make the GUI unusable
what's even the point guys

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with teaching interns that you have to teach them the same thing over and over and over again? Starting to get a little annoying.4

I haven't ranted anything in 21 days. Life is getting boring. Same old bugs, idiot clients, implementing crud over and over,,
How to deal with this?4 -
When you teach people how to code as much as I do, having to explain why things like this are so wrong over and over again starts to make you die inside.

Don't point at the screen over my shoulder.
Don't suggest the troubleshooting step I'm currently on, while pointing at the screen and whispering over my shoulder.
Don't think out loud as you are troubleshooting over my shoulder.

Had a sleep paralysis of Rick Flair's voice saying "ostentatious, yeeeah" over and over again slightly changing the tone like in that "Doctor Deuce dot com" meme https://yewtu.be/watch/...

When everything is taken away from you, and this might not happen for a very long time, just remember that you surrendered every ounce of control of your life over to those whom have been out to fuck you over since before you were born.1

Before installing Arch Linux, I failed to see why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
After installing Arch Linux, still have no idea why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
(Still using and loving it though, after 3+ months.)1 -
Once someone asked me to look over a bit of code and sent it over Discord. Needless to say I didn't spend very long looking through it...

Yup

One fire they willfully set over and over again creates a predictable snowstorm in June by blotting out the sun causing the temperature at night to dip to freezing

I have a technical job interview Wednesday for a remote software developer position
Does anyone have any advice on how to be successful?
I'm a little nervous about it, because I have been looking for a job for a while now and have been rejected over and over again...1 -
While using Spyder the python kernel died(not that rare), so I restarted the kernel and... It kept dying over and over and over again.
So I restart the IDE... can't even connect to the kernel anymore.

Comodo internet security was blocking stuff.
Ffs, I had given up and I was ready to reinstall the whole damn environment if not Anaconda.
I still love Comodo.1 -
Was the devRant algorithm updated recently? I keep getting the same rants over and over. I don't think I've been on devRant that much lately to see all rants.5

So glad I decided to use Spring Boot... Love it's bean configuration for dependency injections... Also love the RowMapper interface that's used with the JdbcTemplate. No more redundant Exception handling over and over again and I can still get close to the metal with writing my own queries. DOPE.

In addition to being able to lookup DNS queries over Twitter, telegram (even literal ones), devRant, HTTP(s), TLS and even the DNS protocol itself - Cloudflare will now offer DNS-over-HAM in London.

So I was on github today and this teenager came up to me and asked what I was doing but I was too chill to answer at that time.
My screen read "Forking in progress" and now he's been saying it over and over again and thinks it's funny.

Ever feel like all you ever do is recode the same projects over and over with no significant time or funding or sometimes energy to complete something that would be new or awesome ?
I really wish I had more opportunity to collaborate personally.1 -

What do you tell yourself when you are struggling to resolve an issue? Or when you solve an issue only to find another, and then solve that only to repeat that cycle over and over? Do you have any tips for dealing with the frustration of errors?2

How about no? -
Work as a SOE Engineer and have a lot of custom application deployments managed via PowerShell. Collegue came over today and suggested that I include a few more "sleep" breaks as newer processers run code to fast and can skip over cmdlts.
I can't even.2 -
The 1080ti is rated at a little more over 11 teraflops. GPUs with over 1 teraflops of compute performance was released in the early 2000's.
It's 2017 and we are stuck with fancy gen xxx cpus.
I smell a huge compute performance wastage.1 -
So leadership comes and goes but engineers remain, stuck repeating the same tasks over and over. Companies seem to forget their own experiments. How can we force that info to get retained between PMs and leadership?2

Can you even call yourself a frontend dev when you betray your backend mindset by prefering JS over CSS and JSX over HTML + DOM API?3

All those complaining about getting interrupted while coding/debugging. Imagine getting interrupted twice in every 3 minutes during your anyways short working time (talk 2 to 5 hours) 'cause your actual job is to tutor people in using a toolchain and not developing it (at least not during that time)...
