Things like this make me want to toss my laptop into a lake and open a bakery.
-
@Wisecrack I don’t know. That one says expired for me.
-
@Wisecrack Not difficult to get accounts, posting, voting, tagging, searching, notifications, feed, api, etc. working. (Would take time, though.) Avatars would be more difficult. The “pipeless” bit (the “subscribed” activity)… I don’t know.
I know there have been some attempts to scrape the db via api in order to preserve everything, though I don’t know how those fared.
I doubt the energy would be the same. We simply wouldn’t have the same community. -
Are you on the devRant discord?
If not, we should share contact details in some way. -
@Wisecrack Yeah, it really feels that way.
-
@Wisecrack One of my most recent projects (which I am fortunately no longer working on since I switched teams) was to build a no-login, no-database, internal-only frontend for a bunch of microservices to give visibility into them, plus metrics to make sure things are working well, etc. Also, to allow customer service to login (so, logins) and fix issues, keep track of who did what for audit reasons (so… a db), and later: allow merchants to access this as well (so… not internal-only…). Yep, conflating requirements, all in the original spec and tickets.
Not my dumpster fire anymore.
Amusingly, my boss said that was my chance at a promotion “because it will have good visibility within the company.” I don’t want one. I want to leave. Desperately. -
@Wisecrack Seems that way :(
-
@Wisecrack Work (Hell), kids, Factorio, gardening (cherries! blueberries! Apples!), and chickens. Plus, of course, the never ending housework.
I just went to the forest and sat next to a waterfall. That was nice. I’d post pictures, but this place has reached the end of days and uploading no longer works.
How about you? It’s been so long! -
@Wisecrack Hey!
It was probably proving P=NP and disproving all of those silly “genius” mathematicians. -
I think I figured out why she ghosted you.

macOS can die in a fire.
Windows, too. -
Yeah, it’s alright.
I used that for a few things quite awhile ago. Nice and simple. -
Likewise, and it’s disheartening.
I get “unfortunately” responses from maybe 10% of my applications. Nothing but silence from the rest.
I so desperately need to escape.
I’ve been isolating so much and for so long I basically don’t talk anymore. -
Unless it comes from me, it’s just a cheap knockoff.

Cloudflare’s adoption was the point of failure for the Internet.

Just toss in a few jQuery versions, maybe React, etc.
Offload some features to a library and include it in /vendor. Each new feature requires a version bump and therefore replacing all of the files. Huge +/- farm right there. -
@hjk101 That is a great way to get fired / cast out to another dev team.
While I agree it's a good way to handle repeated scenarios like this, you also need to know your audience. If that audience takes offense at everything / values emotion over reason... it doesn't matter if you're right. Emotional people cannot be reasoned with, and tend to lash out. You offended them, so you're the one to blame and are punished accordingly. -
@King of Lithuania I totally expected a response to my banter. Boo!
-
@kiki Huh. That's an odd set of definitions in Russian:
"полигон": polygon; ground; shooting range; butt?
In English:
"Polygon": multiple-sided 2d shape (from Greek: multi+angle)
"Polygon sand": This would be... grains of sand carved into a flat multiple-sided shapes? -
Sadly, the above is pretty true.
I really hope someone can take this over from @dfox. It would be a shame to see devRant die.
There's still some of us around. Not as many as there should be, and all too much ad spam (like, why?).
Oh well. I'll be here 'til the end. -
@kiki Polygon sand?
-
@King of Lithuania At least it’s Ireland. Could be worse. Could be Lithuania.

I work somewhere half as bad on process. Releasing anything is a 50 step dance routine, and it only ever gets longer. I haven’t found a way to cope either, apart from occasionally skipping some of it.

Doxylamine succinate is very very bad for your liver. Do not recommend.
Though if you pair it with Vitamin B6 you have an amazing anti-nausea medication. Highly recommend. -

Gnome? Ugh! Yuck.
Overly “user friendly” (simplified) for me.
Also: the devs hate you, you know. -
