A devRant Update!
Hey everyone,
We thought now would be a great time for a devRant summer update on what we've added recently and what we've been working on.
Highlights since our last update:
- We launched devRant++, a supporter program for people who want to help us cover our costs while getting some cool extra features (a supporter badge on rants/comments/profile, reserved spot on our in-app supporter list, ability to edit rants/comments for up to 30 minutes instead of 5, and thanks to immediate user feedback, we also added the ability to post a rant every 1 hour instead of 2, and post comments that are up to 2,000 characters instead of 1,000!) We are extremely happy and thankful for the great response the program has gotten and we plan to continue to improve it using your feedback.
- We added the ability to subscribe to a user's rants. This makes it so you get a notification whenever that user posts a new rant!
- We added an "active discussions" feature (available in the "more" tab on the right). If you're looking to join a conversation happening in the moment, then this feature will help you discover those rants. It shows rants that have recently been commented on so if it's a topic that interests you, you can easily get in on the discussion!
Some stuff we have in the pipeline:
- More fun avatar stuff, including fun new OS/language-themed pets
- More perks for the devRant++ subscriber program - if you have anything you'd like to see, please let us know and we will try to make it happen!
- We will be testing some stuff to help classify rant types (rants, jokes, questions, etc.) in order to create a more personalized experience
- On that note, we're also going to take some more time to do some work on the algo as we haven't done much in terms of improvement since the initial smart algo launched
- Community projects page update - we've been slacking on updating the page and apologize for that. If you have created a devRant-related project and it's not on the community page, please resend it to david@hexicallabs.com (even if you sent it already) so we can make sure it gets added. Sorry about that!
A note on community etiquite regarding voting on content:
We've always believed that one of the most important and awesome experiences on devRant is getting your content noticed and appreciated by others. If you enjoy a piece of content, you should upvote it. If you enjoy 500 pieces of content, you should upvote them all. People really appreciate others enjoying their rants and comments so let them know if you do! If you don't like content, you can downvote it with the relevant reason. What we don't encourage is voting on content that you haven't actually looked at or spamming upvotes in mass for content you're not even actually reading/viewing. While we don't encourage that, it's not explicitly disallowed so we won't impose any penalty for it.
What is strictly prohibited and enforced is using scripts or automated procedures for voting on content. Anyone who is caught doing that will have their account deleted without warning. While very rare, we caught a couple of people doing that this week and both accounts in question were immediately deleted once discovered. To be clear, this is the practice of explicitly using a script or automation to mass vote on content. You will NEVER be banned/deleted for voting on a lot of content manually, even if you vote quickly and on lots of stuff. We just want to make that clear becuase this is not meant to discourage people from voting, it is only regarding votes not placed by humans. So if you're a human voting on content, you have nothing to worry about, we promise!
Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback on any of this. We love constructive feedback and in the past it has gone a very long way to improving and advancing the devRant community. And as always, thank you to everyone who contributed to the community in any way, we really appreciate it and want to keep making your experienfce better.
Happy ranting,
~David and Tim (Team devRant)

So, I needed a package installed on one of our Unix servers. The package manager--which is obsolete garbage--was failing with a message which can only be described as a variant of "Go fuck yourself". A quick Google search didn't help.
3 espressos and an eternity later, I have descended into a manic state. My hair has turned grey and I have started lactating. As a last-ditch effort, I try a new search query on Google, and the first link takes me to a forum with a thread discussing a similar issue. The last post in the thread has a solution which works for me. After fixing the issue, everything in the world feels right and I decide to thank the generous poster, who is like an angel to me at this point.
Guess what? The poster is none other than me. 8 months back, I had created a user account on the forum just to post the solution to a similar issue I had on another server.13 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
We had a bit of a slow year in terms of devRant updates, but we gained some momentum towards the end of the year and we're looking forward to carrying it into 2020. Recently, we launched what I think are our coolest new avatar items yet (https://devrant.com/rants/2322869/...) and behind the scenes we got our iOS/Android apps on the latest version of the frameworks we use, which will help us continue to improve stability. Still, we definitely would have liked to do more, but we're optimistic the coming year will bring great things for devRant.
One thing we are very proud of is this year we had our best year ever in terms of platform stability and uptime. Despite the platform growing and our userbase growing, we had almost no complete app downtime even though our infrastructure is minimal. A large part of this is thanks to devRant++ supporters, who allow us to maintain a small but effective tier of infrastructure and redundancy.
In the coming year, we're going to launch one of our most ambitious initiatives yet, and we're also going to continue to improve the devRant experience itself. We want to try to gather more user feedback, so we'll be working on a way to do that too. Stay tuned, more on this stuff coming soon.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community! And thank you to our awesome devRant++ supporters for continuing to be the main drivers to keeping devRant up and running.
Looking forward to 2020,
- David and Tim

So... A random morning moment:
(c - Cient, m - me)
C: Help!!! Our users are complaining that our website is not working as intended!!! This is crucial!!!!
M: What's the problem? What is not working?
C: EVERYTHING!!!! FIX IT!!!!
M: Could you be more specific...?
C: Look at the bugsnag - it has all the errrors!!!
M: *looks there - no errors* - But... It has no errors...
C: Okay, so client told me he's using Galaxy SII - does that ring a bell?
M: *thinks that I'm fucked* - Asks, which browser?
C: Why do you need it? It's a browser after all...
M: Yeah but not all browsers are the same and I need type and version to investigate...
C: It's Samsung default browser... Last updated 2012 January.
M: Well, tell that user to update the browser, the site is working fine on newer versions...
C: No, you update it.
M: Browser?!
C: Yes, what else?!
M: Of course, I'll fly 3000 kilometres to press UPDATE button on clients phone...
C: Well, he's not doing it himself - he's afraid!
M: Well, that is his problem. Site is working fine for other users with newer browsers.
C: But... He's a client
M: I get it but he's a client that uses 6 years old browser and tries to visit our website. Don't you remember that we ditched IE support on your behalf for the same reason?!
C: Oh... I see... Can you make something that it works with 2005 browsers?
M: Of course... *evil laugh starts* I'll make the website work on EVERY single device EVER - make it plain text.
C: Are you joking?
M: Are you?
----
And since then, we ditched the actual need for supporting users with old browsers that don't update to modern standards... Feels great!12 -
IT: Hi, how can I help?
User: Hi, I can't get onto the wifi / internet, my computer says "No Signal".
IT: Hm, we don't have wifi, your on a cable, what exactly is saying no signal?
User: Its just on the screen here.
IT: No but where, are you inside a browser, or is it a popup down the bottom corner?
User: No I haven't got that far yet, it just says no signal on a black screen, then it flashes and says no signal in another position.
IT: ...... did you turn on your computer after turning on the monitor ... thats the screen saying no signal from the computer.
User: ah yep, thats it, thanks!3 -

My first post on devRant. Hope you like it (is a true story)
User : Hey, can you help me with this thumbdrive? Cannot open it
Me: Sure, let me see...
At this time I noticed that the drive was leaking something and smells funny also...
Me: Did you dropped it into water or something liquid?
User: Ehmm. Yes! Washed it with bleach!
Me: But why?
User : Oh! because of viruses.8 -
I’m a senior dev at a small company that does some consulting. This past October, some really heavy personal situation came up and my job suffered for it. I raised the flag and was very open with my boss about it and both him and my team of 3 understood and were pretty cool with me taking on a smaller load of work while I moved on with some stuff in my life. For a week.
Right after that, I got sent to a client. “One month only, we just want some presence there since it’s such a big client” alright, I guess I can do that. “You’ll be in charge of a team of a few people and help them technically.” Sounds good, I like leading!
So I get here. Let’s talk technical first: from being in a small but interesting project using Xamarin, I’m now looking at Visual Basic code, using Visual Studio 2010. Windows fucking Forms.
The project was made by a single dev for this huge company. She did what she could but as the requirements grew this thing became a behemoth of spaghetti code and User Controls. The other two guys working on the project have been here for a few months and they have very basic experience at the job anyways. The woman that worked on the project for 5 years is now leaving because she can’t take it anymore.
And that’s not the worse of it. It took from October to December for me to get a machine. I literally spent two months reading on my cellphone and just going over my shitty personal situation for 8 hours a day. I complained to everyone I could and nothing really worked.
Then I got a PC! But wait… no domain user. Queue an extra month in which I could see the Windows 7 (yep) log in screen and nothing else. Then, finally! A domain user! I can log in! Just wait 2 extra weeks for us to give your user access to the subversion rep and you’re good to go!
While all of this went on, I didn’t get an access card until a week ago. Every day I had to walk to the reception desk, show my ID and request they call my boss so he could grant me access. 5 months of this, both at the start of the day and after lunch. There was one day in particular, between two holidays, in which no one that could grant me access was at the office. I literally stood there until 11am in which I called my company and told them I was going home.
Now I’ve been actually working for a while, mostly fixing stuff that works like crap and trying to implement functions that should have been finished but aren’t even started. Did I mention this App is in production and being used by the people here? Because it is. Imagine if you will the amount of problems that an application that’s connecting to the production DB can create when it doesn’t even validate if the field should receive numeric values only. Did I mention the DB itself is also a complete mess? Because it is. There’s an “INDEXES” tables in which, I shit you not, the IDs of every other table is stored. There are no Identity fields anywhere, and instead every insert has to go to this INDEXES table, check the last ID of the table we’re working on, then create a new registry in order to give you your new ID. It’s insane.
And, to boot, the new order from above is: We want to split this app in two. You guys will stick with the maintenance of half of it, some other dudes with the other. Still both targeting the same DB and using the same starting point, but each only working on the module that we want them to work in. PostmodernJerk, it’s your job now to prepare the app so that this can work. How? We dunno. Why? Fuck if we care. Kill you? You don’t deserve the swift release of death.
Also I’m starting to get a bit tired of comments that go ‘THIS DOESN’T WORK and ‘I DON’T KNOW WHY WE DO THIS BUT IT HELPS and my personal favorite ‘??????????????????????13 -
I haven't told anyone I know yet but yesterday I got a call from a user and she asked me if I could come down and take a look at some software I support. I did and fixed the issue.
She then asked if I could take a look at her computer because help desk and PC team had tried to fix and couldn't.
5 minutes later I fixed it (every site she went to gave cert error in both chrome and ie). I stood up and there was a couple seconds of me and her just facing each other not saying anything. She was smiling ear to ear the whole time. (This issue was weeks old I think). Then she walks towards me......
And hugs me.25 -
Lamer rant
For a really long time I said to myself that this is too basic to rant about but lately it became so frequent and extreme that here is my rant about completely clueless users that ask me IT related questions.
Disclaimer: Said users are people that I generally can't avoid. Distant family members, neighbors and etc.
Case 0:
U: I don't know what's happening!! The computer doesn't work!!
M: What do you mean?
U: There's no Facebook! And everything is stuck and no messenger!!!
M: The WiFi on your laptop was off. I turned it on. Still, this doesn't mean that the pc wasn't working.
U: I don't understand this shit!!!
Case 1:
U: I hate this computer!!! It never works!!! Help meeee!!!
M: What now?
U: Where did the internet disappear?!
M: (assuming it's wifi or browser related)
Actually user moved the Chrome window to bottom-right corner and lost it.
Every time I try to show the user how I resolve the issue the user yells that there are too many steps, that they are complicated and that I'm a bad teacher and doing it too fast.
Case 2:
U: My computer is so slow! It barely can load google translate! And I can't listen to music on youtube!! Shitty laptop! It's you! Your computers in the apartment drain everything!!!
M: You have no idea what you are talking about.
U: My husband told me that your computers are heavy and drain everything!
M: What exactly did he tell you that my devices drain?
U: I don't know! All the energy! I believe him! He knows!
M: My computers drain less electricity than your vacuum and I have a separate internet connection. Not only we share nothing but also I drain nothing.
U: Since you appeared all the computers are slow!!!!
Fkk...
Case 3:
U: I don't understand, where is my whatsapp?
M: You can't locate the app on your phone?
U: Yes! F*ck, help me! I'm so angry and I really need this NOW!!!
M: Shut up. I'm already here and helping.
(I open users phone and whatsapp is the active app...)
U: I can' t find my whatsapp with Clara!
F*ck you! F*ck you! Ghckjfshij!!!
Case 4:
(crazy hitting on my door)
U: I don't have THE internet!!!
It's you again! You took all of THE internet!!!
M: No, it doesn't work like that. Your provider is bad, your package is cheap and your cables are of low quality.
U: I need THE internet immediately!!! Stop playing with your typing and fix the facebook or I'll cut the power cables to the house!!
I can go on, just don't think that recalling all those events is healthy for me.20 -
User: "Hey, can you help me? My program doesn't work."
Consultant: "What is the problem? Are you using Turbo Pascal?"
User: "Yes, the program just blocks the machine."
Consultant: "Well, does it compile?"
User: "I don't know -- it just doesn't run. You see? There's the EXE file. If you run it, it blocks the machine."
Consultant: "And where is your source, the PAS file??"
User: "I wrote it and renamed it to EXE so it could run."5 -
How do I un-idiot my users when it comes to clicking on dodgy email-links??
Got a forwarded email just there from a user who said;
Good afternoon,
Is the below ok to open?
I just tried but got a popup saying I've been blocked from opening it.
I'm not sure who it is coming from and I am not waiting on anything but as it says its from dropbox and is important, i know it's okay.
Can you unblock the link ASAP please?
This is really impeding my work-day as I need to know what it is and act accordingly.
Regards... user.
The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;
"Hi tu my freind,
You tu still read a pending verrry important document sent by one of your own contact to be vieweddd.
Install "Highly Confidential english.pdf" by clickinggg here
*insert link leading to something called 'viral-update-trojan.exe'*"
I mean, seriously... help!!! 😢
We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!
Its so exhausting!! What is wrong with people!!! Argh!!! 😤12 -
I am bloody sick of being on my own.
I was the sole dev at the last few jobs I've held, with the exception of API Guy -- who didn't really help much, and who got fired / quit six months after I started. Every other job I've either been the only dev, or the only web dev. (Exception:My boss at my previous job was a Rails dev, but he has zero time to code, and was significantly less experiened so he could only rarely help anyway.)
But now I'm in a company with a bunch of other devs, and they're all ostensibly senior devs, so you'd think I should be able to ask questions, right? And get answers? that actually help? like "Hey, you built this; how does it work?" No bloody way.
So far every time I've asked someone for help, they've been incompetent. I asked about what a few flags did, and got an answer that basically said "you just gotta know. oh, and the labels aren't up to date, so don't trust what they say." I asked the head of the "product team" about a ticket that he wrote, and he changed what it meant four times within two days. I asked about another, and he said "oh, that isn't reproduceable." Thanks. I asked about mailers, and got two very different, very incompete walkthroughs from the more senior devs (9+ years on this codebase) that didn't help. I asked two people about how users and roles work, and still have no idea what kind of user (there are like twelve?) is what, what roles even exist, or how to check for permissions. `@current_user` is a thing, but idfk what it holds since that can change considerably, and there's an impersonation feature that changes how it works, too. I ask the product guy again about where to link something, and he has no idea. I ask said product guy about what this feature needs to do, and he doesn't know. I ask what the legal team needs, and i get nothing. I ask the designer where the goddamn CSS lives, and he doesn't know; he apparently just puts it wherever he feels like, even if it's a completely unrelated stylesheet. As long as it works, right?
I ask very simple and straighforward questions, and it takes them forever to get back to me saying what amounts to "idk, ask someone else."
This feels like the same crap all over again, except now there are a bunch of devs I can ask that give me basically the same answers as the sales people always did. Always "idk" or a confusing mess of an 'answer' that skips most/all of the important bits. At least these people don't [usually] contradict themselves.
So, @Root is all alone, again.
And currounded by incompetence.
Again.
For fuck's sake.
Can't I catch a break?19 -
So I'm a UX Designer and my husband is a Mobile Engineer so obviously he makes more. I swear my field doesn't get enough credit it deserves (considering we're the ones figuring how the user will use the app/site/whatever device). My mother in-law decided my work isn't as important as his and that I stand below him. Gee thanks for the biggest insult, even when I had to go to grad school for 2 years, worked full-time at the same time so that we could help his family with some stuff considering we're the only couple who is capable of it. :/29

Hey everyone! Recently there was a bug discovered which caused many (but not all) “user x posted a new rant” subscription notifs (both in-app and push) to not get sent out for the last week or so. It should be fixed now. Unfortunately though, they won’t be backfilled, so make sure you take a look at your favorite ranters’ profiles since you might not have been notified about their most recent rants.
A big thanks to @gitpush for reporting the issue and thanks to @linuxxx for help testing/confirming the fix worked.
For the basic cause: when we overhauled/fixed push notifs on Android in the last build (about a week ago), we had to convert to FCM. When a “user posted rant” notification was getting sent out, the asynchronous worker would process all of the subscription notifs in a loop. So for users who have a lot of subscribers, somewhere in the loop, something was failing, likely having to do with the new FCM send method. This is now fixed and all push notifs in that worker are also done asynchronously.
Let me know if you have any questions and apologies for the loss of subscription notifs!12 -
I have multiple but one of my biggest ones:
Build an entire suite of services which can replace the popular Google/microsoft/facebook (etc) services.
Of course: privacy respecting, preferrably everything possible end-to-end encrypted.
Because fuck mass surveillance and those companies and if I can do anything to fuck them (quite literally) and help people getting to user friendly alternatives, I'll do the best I can.21 -
Fullstack dev: Hey I need your help with one of this method in the service layer (We use Java).
Me: Sure. What’s up!
Fullstack dev: When you get a user ....blah blah blah...
Me (typing code):
if (user != null) { ... }
Fullstack dev: Wait! This won’t work. You need to write this:
if (null != user) { ... }
In Java, you write like this. In JS it’ll work, not in Java.
Me: (also fuck this guy)
He’s among the famous devs in the company - (A very very very famous European bank).
I checked his commits for the frontend (React Native)
switch (some_expr) {
case foo:
return stuff()
break // <— note this
case bar:
return moreStuff()
break // <— note this
// more cases here with break after return statements
}
Me: Hey if you’re returning from a case why are you using a break. It’s dead code.
Fullstack dev: It’ll fall through otherwise.

You’re a fucking dunce! Please drink a litre of Carborane in a rusty HIV infested container! Cheers!
PS More to come!29 -
After work I wanted to come home and work on a project. I have a few ideas for a few things I want to do, so I started a Trello board with the ideas to start mapping things out. But there were guys redoing the kitchen tile and it was noisy as fuck. So I packed up and headed to the library.
So I get all set up, and start plugging away. Currently working on a database design for a project that is a form for some user data collection for my dad, for an internal company thing. I am not contracted for this - I just know the details so I am using it as a learning exercise. Anyway...
I'm fucking about in a VM in MySQL and I feel someone behind me. So I turn and it's this girl looking over my shoulder. She asks what I am doing, and it turned into a 2 hour conversation. She is only a few years older than me (21) but she was brilliant. She (unintentionally) made me feel SO stupid with her scope of knowledge and giant brain. I learned quite a bit from talking to her and she offered to help me further, if I liked.
And she was really cute. We exchanged phone numbers...16 -
The satisfaction/get rekt feeling when I do this.
When a client sends an email asking us to do something "ASAP" and end it with "thanks in advance!" while it's something that we have user guides for.
"Dear {client.name},
I'd like to point you to a tutorial we have about this on our online help desk: {tutorial.link}.
Have a great day!"
Ha, rekt!15 -
The last year my school installed MagicBoards (whiteboard with beamer that responses to touch) in every class room and called itself "ready for the future of media". What they also got is A FUCKING LOW SPEC SERVER RUNNING DEBIAN 6 W/O ANY UPDATES SINCE 2010 WHICH IS DYING CONSTANTLY.
As I'm a nice person I asked the 65 y/o technician (who is also my physics teacher) whether I could help updating this piece of shit.
Teacher: "Naahh, we don't have root access to the server and also we'll get a new company maintaining our servers in two years. And even if we would have the root access, we can't give that to a student."
My head: "Two. Years. TWO YEARS?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME YOU RETARDED PIECE OF SHIT?! YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU DON'T HAVE TO INSTALL UPDATES EVEN THOUGH YOU CREATE AN SSH USER FOR EVERY FUCKING STUDENT SO THEY CAN LOGIN USING THEIR BIRTH DATE?! DID YOU EVER HEAR ABOUT SECURITY VULNERABILITIES IN YOUR LITTLE MISERABLE LIFE OR SOUNDS 'CVE-2016-5195' LIKE RANDOM LETTERS AND NUMBERS TO YOU?! BECAUSE - FUNFACT - THERE ARE TEN STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THE SUDO GROUP IF YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS!"
Me (because I want to keep my good grades): "Yes, that sounds alright."13 -
Overheard a phone call between the Senior Network Engineer and a contracted Printer-company at 9am this morning. Photocopier was giving a 'functional error' message on-screen and not printing;
N.E:
I logged this call last
Thursday afternoon. Thats 1.5 days of the photocopier not working on our busiest site! Where's the engineer??
.... yes, that's the error message.
Yes, i can log into it, you should have the IP address from the call.
Yes, it's obviously pinging too.
Yes.... we've power-cycled the printer multiple times...
yes, tried that too...
yes, I've unplugged the network cable as well... left it for 15 minutes.
... sorry. What?
What did you say?
Are you f***ing kidding me?
Would you also like me to rub the side of the f***ing machine, and say a prayer while I'm at it??
*takes a deep breath*
Fine, I'll do that but when it doesn't work, i want someone out on the site before lunchtime today!
*slams phone down angrily*
N.E to me as he stomps out of the office;
He wants me to get the user to unplug the network cable and do a power cycle. How the f**k is that going to help? Idiots! Don't know why we have a contract with them, i could do a better job!!!
*comes back into office 5 minutes later*
Me: did it fix it?
NE: yeah. Damn.
*leaves room again to make apologetic phonecall*2 -

Today I found the reason for one of the stupidest bugs I had in like.. ever!
Me and a fellow student are currently porting the infoscreen of our university to HTML.
One of the functions of this screen is showing payed advertising and I was working on loading and displaying the images of our advertisment partners.
I had the whole system in place, and the images loaded.. but they wouldn't show. Upon inspection I saw they were displayed but with a size of 0x0 px.
I spend hours searching the web for javascript bugs, double checking my css file and everything you could imagine. I even asked my CS professor for help and he didn't find the cause for this strange issue I had.
..and then I saw it. A little note in Chromes inspector saying the image style would be set by my user-agent. Despite not trusting that information, I closely inspected my browser.
And then it dawned on me.. I would turn my adblocker off and lo and behold.. it worked!
I then, after celebrating my triumph, changed the tag of the img element from 'advert' to something else…3 -
Why the hell would someone name their function printSomething?
I literally just got a message from an old Sololearn user needing help with yet another thing.
The moment I saw that function name was the moment I logged out. Stop using shit function names.21 -
! a Rant
Dear fellow devRanters!
I have an announcement to make. After we shared Programmer’s Music (www.programmersmusic.com) on devRant, we had so many awesome user started using our service and they still do. We love you all for that and thank you for you continuous support and use.
Now that our team has become more focused and productive, we took upon a new problem to tackle a few months back. The problem we chose is about increasing email productivity and ability to comprehend knowledge hidden in emails in a more effective way. We are excited to introduce ‘Altmail’! (https://www.altmail.in)
We believe that there’s a hidden treasure in your inbox waiting to be explored. All those newsletters and blog updates, all those deals, all those Medium digests and LinkedIn alerts, contain keys to becoming a better version of yourself. So we have made it Altmail’s mission to help you spend less time organising and more time acquiring knowledge. Altmail transforms your cluttered inbox into the source of knowledge, automagically.
We are currently in private beta and have limited invites left, to be specific 33 out of 100. Please check it out here - http://at.altmail.in/devRant!
We are looking forward to your honest feedback! :)
Thanks a ton!
Cheers!

Hey guys! I made a sort of parody website as a project for my university and I would really love to get some critisism!

seriously, I know git is not the most user friendly, but really....
I attend to a course in my high school, like, it offers you a technical and a high school diploma in the end of tree years of course, anyway
last year I had this project. I had 4 other people working with me. I suggested we use git as there would be many people working in the project and git would help us manage all the files and get everything together in the end.
they didn't even bother to try learning it, I was like "fuck it, let's go without it", no one did anything till the last 2 weeks. then I was all stressed out getting the code together, manually, and the deadline was close.
In the end I wasn't able to put the chat this guy have made, he got mad and I was like "motherfucker, it would be one damn command `git merge` and your fucking chat would be in the final project"
oh it was great to get this out 😎😀
don't even know if I'm making sense xD5 -
I would like to invite you all to test the project that a friend and me has been working on for a few months.
We aim to offer a fair, cheap and trusty alternative to proprietary services that perform data mining and sells information about you to other companies/entities.
Our goal is that users can (if they want) remain anonymous against us - because we are not interested in knowing who you are and what you do, like or want.
We also aim to offer a unique payment system that is fair, good and guarantees your intergrity by offer the ability to pay for the previous month not for the next month, by doing that you do not have to pay for a service that you does not really like.
Please note that this is still Free Beta, and we need your valuable experience about the service and how we can improve it. We have no ETA when we will launch the full service, but with your help we can make that process faster.
With this service, we do want to offer the following for now:
Nextcloud with 50 GB storage, yes you can mount it as a drive in Linux :)
Calendar
Email Client that you can connect to your email service (
SearX Instance
Talk ( voice and video chat )
Mirror for various linux distros
We are using free software for our environment - KVM + CEPH on our own hardware in our own facility. That means that we have complete control over the hosting and combined with one of the best ISP in the world - Bahnhof - we believe that we can offer something unique and/or be a compliment to your current services if you want to have more control over your data.

"I suggest a read of the documentation instead of only hacking around"

@dfox and @trogus
I’m quite into lean development, sorry... “Lean Development” and I can’t help but notice your users are trying to tell you something by their actions.
I keep skimming past posts where a user is @‘ed in the main rant.
Then either themselves or someone else will @ those people in the first or second comment as @ing doesn’t work on the main body.
I understand you have your reasons but in the spirit of lean, MVP, build measure learn etc etc
Shouldn’t you accept the behaviour of least resistance and implement the functionality in the main rant body?
Because you’re not stopping anyone from @ing folk, you’re just making it more annoying to do so.
This meme says it all

Not only do I write software, but now I help the managers view and understand our analytics, just like in kindergarten.
Now I'm forced to help them essentially fake data so investors are satisfied 🤡🔫
"Delete metrics X, Y, and Z for now, we don't want anyone to see them!"
"Change the label of this metric to 'unique user' views! (not total!)"
"Set all charts to cumulative so it looks like they are all up and to the right!"
Sigh.
This isn't what I signed up for.17 -

"Well first of all little shithead that is not rust-like we dont do that in rust here is how godfather mozilla intended it first you create a register in your ram then you download these 9 packages that are not in std for some reason then you box your integer 78 times then you sacrifice a goat that the rust compiler doesnt give you random advice that doesnt work then you pee on your motherboard and commit 53 times to open source repos on github bitbucket and svn then you will maybe probably have 7 assigned to your variable"

"Oh wow rust sure is overly complicated"

The company I interned at last summer decided to adopt a JS framework a little over a year ago. The managers went with the old Angular 1.x because they didn't want a JS build process. Each page has ~100 script tags on it, and these are manually included in various files (no automated way to include dependencies). None of the CSS/JS files are minified, either.
They really should have chose Angular 2+, or an entirely different framework (React, VueJS). They're also just now upgrading the codebase from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.2 (5.6 support ended a long time ago, and security support ends this month).
I love the company itself but these practices are poor.
I may be working there full time eventually. I hope to eventually help with the inevitable transition to a newer framework once Angular 1.x is dead since I am an avid user of newer JS technologies. Any tips on convincing manager(s) towards newer technology? (Or at least convincing them to combine+minify these files in production to reduce # of requests and bandwidth.)
Also this company's product has millions of active users.

A few years ago I was browsing Bash.org, and a user posted that he'd physically lost a machine.
A few weeks ago, I'd switched my router out for OPNSense. I figured it was time to start cleaning up my network.
Over the course of tracking down IP addresses and assigning statics to mac addresses, I spotted an IP I didn't recognize.
Being a home network, I'm pretty familiar with everything on the network by IP, so was a little taken aback.
I did some testing, found out that it was a Linux box. Cool.
I can SSH into it. Ok.
Logs show that it's running fine, no CPU/Memory/Harddrive issues. Nice.
So where is it?
Traceroute shows its connected directly to the router... Maybe over an unmanaged switch...
Hostname is "localhost"... That's no help.
I've walked the network 4 times now, and God knows where it is.
I think maybe I'll just leave it alone. If it ain't broke...9 -
Started my own business recently, it's still in the works but it's picking up nicely... Had a (l)user call me this morning asking if I could help him with his website design. I tell him he's and ask him what he's like his website to do... His exact words "I want everything like Facebook but the site not to be called Facebook and the colors green. Can you please make this happen?"

I used to work for a Mexican bank in Mexico, as a developer I opened (and use) an account, since the bank was not famous(most of its business was with the government), going to the bank and see no waiting lines was an advantage, so I started using it as my only bank account even nowadays.
Now I live in NYC, and some years later I see on the news the bank merged(was absorbed) with another bank, 'sounds good, I don't care' I thought.
Well, I open my online account and the nightmare begins:
1) Redirection to the 2nd bank page
2) My credentials does not work
3) Call the original bank(no answers)
4) After several calls and days I got a phone contact
5) 'well, try all other passwords you have' (transaction passwords, operative passwords, login passwords, etc), among many other stupid answers, which by the way, were preceded by infinite question about the 2nd bank, like:
- when did you open the account with the 2nd bank?
- what is your 2nd bank account number
6) after 20 calls like that, they asked for documents, information and screenshots, and send all that to the 2nd bank tech help email.
7) After several days a person responded: 'Go to your bank(which fucking bank?)' and ask for a new user.
8) a ton of calls to know what bank I was assigned
9) called the bank: 'well, you have to come in person(no exceptions allowed) and request to close your 1st bank account and open a 2nd bank account' (I am not sure if that is gonna work)
All the technology nowadays and still I have to travel thousands of miles hoping this 'solution' works.
to be continue....2 -
So, I found this :
Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and resources. In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, HuntingAndFishing 7.5, and Racing 3.6. I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0. Please help!
Thanks ...Troubled User
-------
REPLY:
Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed not to allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Alimony-Child Support. I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 installed and work on improving the configuration. I suggest installing the background application YesDear 99.0 to alleviate software augmentation.
The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to do this before the system will return to normal anyway.
Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as CleanAndSweep 3.0, CookIt 1.5 and DoBills 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program NagNag 9.5. Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0, but beware because sometimes these applications can be expensive.
WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install SecretaryWithShortSkirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
WARNING!!! Attempting to install NewGirlFriend 8.8 along with Wife 1.0 will crash the system.
(see Wife 1.0 manual, Apologize, High Maintenance & Secretary with Short Skirt)7 -
App: *Crashes*
Every Android user in the universe: I MUST SCREENSHOT IT AND SEND TO DEVELOPER, SYSTEM CRASH DIALOG WILL DEFINITELY HELP TO FIX THAT4 -
Send help..
The project we're currently working on:
- an angular codebase that's broken beyond recognition - nothing's working as it should
- user stories are estimated in hours, but estimations are treated as hard facts. Since the app is so broken, everything takes longer than usual and it's almost impossible to consider every potential hardship during refinements, therefore, we constantly need more time than we have estimated
- retrospectives (intentional plural here, since one time isn't enough) are used to discuss why we cannot manage to finish tickets within the estimations
- the design was made beforehand and is extremely inconsistent and inaccessible
- if you open a new ticket, you need to add a reason for why this ticket is needed - in addition to the ticket description..
- The moment you move a ticket to QA, the "Scrum Master" breathes down your neck, shoving new tickets in your face. Despite having to finish up the other two you're still working on
- multiple teams are working on the application, but - of course - communication is overrated.
I could go on, but I'm too tired..
We were supposed to help the client for a couple of months - we're close to a year now and still nowhere near done.5 -
So this one made me create an account on here...
At work, there's a feature of our application that allows the user to design something (keeping it vague on purpose) and to request a 3D render of their creation.
Working with dynamically positioned objects, textures and such, errors are bound to happen. That's why we implemented a bug report feature.
We have a small team tasked with monitoring the bug reports and taking action upon it, either by fixing a 3D scene, or raising the issue to the dev team.
The other day, a member of that team told me (since I'm part of the dev team) he had received a complain that the image a user received was empty. Strange, we didn't update the code in a while.
So I check the server, all the docker containers are running fine, the code is fine, no errors anywhere.
Then, as I'm scratching my head, that guy comes back to me and says "I don't know if it can help you, but it's been doing it for a week and a half now".
"And we're only hearing about it now?!", I replied.
"Well, I have bug reports going back to the 15th, but we haven't been checking the reports for a while now since everything was fine", he says as if it was actually a normal thing to say.
"How can you know everything is fine if you're not looking at the thing that says if there's an issue?!", I replied with a face filled with despair.
"Well we didn't receive any new reports in a while, so we just stopped looking. And now the report tool window is actually closed on my machine", he says with a smile and a little laugh in his tone.
In the end, I got to fix the server issue quite easily. But still, the feature wasn't working for 1.5 weeks and more that 330 images weren't sent properly...
So yeah, Doctor, the patient's heart is beating again! Let's unplug the monitor, it should be fine.
Welcome to my little piece of hell :)7 -
So, my boss was angry at me today because...
1. "Why are we taking so long to finish the software?". We started coding in March, and during that time I kept asking for requirements, design and his answer was, "You build it and we'll see." . During that time, after creating the system with only three type of user modes, he was like "Oh, I want customized user permissions." Took me 1 month to come up with a design, implementation for everything. Also during these months, nearly 2 months was wasted because he kept giving me other things to do, and I was not focusing in my current project.
Today he was mad because he expect me not only to build the infrastructure, setup servers, write backend code, do QA etc, He wants me to be a product designer. A fucking product designer. My answer to him was "If you refuse to help with designing the UX, either hire someone or I will just copy/paste things for internet. If the UI works, there's where my job is done."
Fucking hell. Not only I am being under payed, but he expects do to the job of 5 other people. Fuck this shit.11 -
As IT, I hate being too accessible to users (I'm a software dev, not help desk support). One particular user...let's call him Fred (even though his real name is Joe)...sits close to me.
---
Fred: Bobby, fix my Outlook (he says it jokingly but serious). It keeps saying it needs to be repaired.
Me: Yeah had the same issue last week. I just reinstalled it.
Fred: So...you can't fix it?
---
Fred: Bobby, I need access to X.
Me: Ok go to this link to request access and a manager will approve it.
Fred: Whaaat? That's too much work. You are IT and should just give me access.
---
Fred: Youtube isn't working.
Me: Ok...and?
Fred: It means my internet isn't working!
Me: *sigh*3 -
My friend a backend dev who manages a little UI by using bootstrap themes. One Saturday he calls me up says "Dude, I need your help, we had a demo and the CEO decides to demo the project to prospective people on Internet Explorer. It looked alright on Chrome but the whole UI has gone haywire on IE. Need your help asap. Join me on screen share". I checkout his HTML code and find a file where the link tag is inside the body tag. I ask him to move that into head tag as in wherever the master template is, I tell him to change the doctype, add responsive meta tags, and even after all these, it just doesn't render bootstraps media queries. After beating my head for around 15mins, I see a drop-down caret in IE's inspector with 7 besides it, someone had set the compatibility mode to IE7. Why in the world would someone set an IE11 to IE7.
My friend heaved a sigh of relief and walked to his boss to show that he isn't a bad developer, his boss is just a bad user.3 -
so i had the "miscommunication" meeting with PM today. he criticized me for "not following his orders", allegedly having worked on stuff during this sprint that did not help fulfill his sprint goal, and that i should have aligned my work with him. i didn't even realize this exact goal existed specifically for my user story (even though it was at least mentioned with one single word in story description, must have read over it). however, during the whole fucking sprint, he never mentioned a single time i should align with him. every daily i'm explaining what i'm going to do, every day he sees subtasks that i created for this story, and he never disagreed or mentioned this topic, so i assumed i'm on track. and now suddenly, when sprint is over, he blames me for the misalignment?
he also criticized me for having said something rude to him during a team meeting, but he couldn't rephrase or specify what i had said, he couldn't give any details at all, and also i couldn't understand or remember what he meant. what shall i respond to that?🤷♀️
also, aligning my work with that of a colleague and brainstorming with him about how our API could look like for our stakeholders was "not on track / following his orders" for him, even though i had announced it in the daily and he hadn't disagreed.
either this guy has alzheimer's or he has a down on me, dunno what to make out of all that.
and then he mentions i appear "somewhat aggressive" to him.
hmm weird, why should someone become aggressive when they have to deal with this bullshit all the time 🤦♀️12 -

I'm taking an Intro to Programming course along aside an Intro to Computers class so I already know about basic programing, still very new to it though! At the end of the Intro to Comp, we're learning about programming and a classmate was having a hard time understanding assignments and variables.
I explained the idea of the input command at least three times and he kept trying to print out a statement he just wanted to write in instead of printing out the input that the user will enter. He also assigned the same name to different variables.
Explained that what he was doing was not versatile and not useful, explained in an example situation, explained by writing some lines of code myself (THRICE), and he still had trouble understanding me. I didn't want to hold his hand the entire time.
Glad that I was called to leave early since I might get too frustrated if I had to stay back and continue to help him.
Hope he managed to finish the assignments successfully though! Feel kinda bad now...2 -
In the past, the company that i worked gave to all the employees usb to save whatever they want, after that, this happened.
Me: Hi, how can i help you today?
User: The USB that IT gave to us it's broken.
Me: Broken?
User: Yeah, i can't plug-in in my computer.
Me: Did you try turn around?
User: Of course i.. ah, f**k yeah.
And ends the call.2 -
Get a call from a customer asking if I can come check out her “printer”. Okay...
Get there and it’s not just a printer but an embroidery machine - never worked on them in my life and I’m not embarrassed to admit that.
I express that to her but tell her that I’ll definitely check it out and I get the reply - “you own a repair shop and have never worked on one of these, I don’t feel comfortable with you working on it.” - even though she had tried “fixing it” and completely fucked up the application and printer moreso than when it had originally stopped working.
Alright, bitch... I’m sorry that I haven’t worked on every fucking embroidery machine that’s ever been made. I apologize that I’m not familiar with your fucking machine, but if you would give me some time I assure you I can resolve your fucking problem; I imagine it’s (l)user error anyway. But no, you go ahead and send it off to the company that made it with a minimal charge of XXX$ and let them resolve your problem.
Yes, I run a computer/printer/phone repair shop, but that doesn’t automatically mean that I specialize in your FUCKING problem, but I can assure you I’d handle it.
Her - “You’re going to charge me when you didn’t even work on it?!”
Me - “I’m sorry, but I drove out here expecting to work, you declined the work; but there’s still a charge for having me come out here. Yes, you will be getting a bill. If you’d like me to work on it and help you resolve the problem, I’d be more than happy to.”
Her - *rolls eyes*

I've got a rant-type question:
Why would you EVER use Google Chrome?
There are a million browsers in the world, you could've used Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, Bad Wolf, Qute, st, Epiphany etc, but you chose to uss Google Chrome.
What would be the reason you would ever choose Google Chrome over any of the million browsers, out of which many of them get the job done much better than Chrome? Okay, I get it why you might use IE or Edge, cause you might be too lazy to install any other browser or you just want the performance benefits you get with Edge which totally, most definatelly, a very big plus point for Edge.
*"Chrome has a balanced-bloat out of all browsers"*
But how tf does that matter? That doesn't even help performance wise anyways.
I can't get over the fact that I have to see/hear about 'Chrome hogging RAM' EVERYWHERE. Like, why do you even care about the god damn browser? Why is it a standard over the million other browsers that exist? Why can't the general public be educated that browsers have choices (just like phones) and you don't have to spit crap over people who don't use Chrome.
It just drives me crazy of how many people hate Chrome, and still it's a 'default' browser.
I would quote Vivaldi (the company/browser):
'A browser should adapt to you, not the other way around.'
(Disclaimer: Rant of a former Firefox, qute, st, Opera, OperaGX, Edge, and ofcourse, Chrome user. Currently in deep love with Vivaldi.)
I'm done ranting. Have a nice day!
(My first post here, if I did something wrong, let me know! I'll make sure I don't do it again!)55 -
So as all of you web developers know. If you are stepping into the world of web development you stepping into a world of unlimited possibilities, opportunities and adventure.
The flip side is that you step into a world of unlimited choices, tools, best practices, tutorials etc.
Since even for a veteran programmer, this is a little overwhelming, I'd like to take the opportunity to ask you guys for advice.
I know that 'there is no best' and that everything 'depends on what you want to achieve'. So how about just say the pro's and cons or when to use and when not to use. Or why you prefer one over another. Everything is allowed! :D
Maybe it will help others too. Start a nice, professional discussion:)
These are the parts I'd like advice about:
- frontend: what frameworks, libraries
- backend: language, framework, good practice
- server: OS, proxy (nginx, Apache, passenger), extra tips (like don't use root user)
- extras: git, GitHub, docker, anything
Thanks in advance everyone willing to help!:)
Also, if you only know frontend or backend. No worries, just tell me about your specialism!6 -
Everyone talks about crappy categories of user on Stackoverflow - help vampires, rep whores, etc. - but the category of "people who don't care about the stupid mind games, politics or internet points and just want to help others" is so small people apparently don't even think it can exist.
I mean sheesh, I answer on there in my free time to just lend a hand to people, usually in a couple of niche tags that have very little info elsewhere, even for beginners. Of course there's questions that are beyond salvaging and just random homework dumps, but the majority are from genuinely confused users who simply don't know the correct terms to search for.
A question is not inherently evil just because its asker has misunderstood a key concept.
I'm not even asking you to help the poor sods, I'm just asking you to allow me to help without calling me a rep whore or a moron who'd be better talking to bots on reddit 🙄3 -
"A user got this error, can you help?"
Can you at least tell me WHERE you got the issue? How you got to that point? Anything??!?!?!?!?!?!?!3 -
As a pretty solid Angular dev getting thrown a react project over the fence by his PM I can say:
FUCK REACT!
It is nigh impossible to write well structured, readable, well modularized code with it and not twist your mind in recursion from "lift state up" and "rendercycle downwards only"
Try writing a modular modal as a modern function component with interchangeable children (passeable to the component as it should be) that uses portals and returns the result of the passed children components.
Closest I found to it is:
c o d e s a n d b o x.io/s/7w6mq72l2q
(and its a fucking nightmare logic wise and readability wise)
And also I still wouldn't know right of the bat how to get the result from the passed child components with all the oneway binding CLUSTERFUCK.
And even if you manage to there is no chance to do it async as it should be.
You HAVE to write a lot of "HTML" tags in the DOM that practically should not be anywhere but in async functions.
In Angular this is a breeze and works like a charm.
Its not even much gray matter to it...
I can´t comprehend how companies decide to write real big web apps with it.
They must be a MESS to maintain.
For a small "four components that show a counter and fetch user images" - OK.
But fo a big webapp with a big team etc. etc.?
Asking stuff about it on Stackoverflow I got edited unsolicited as fuck and downvoted as fuck in an instant.
Nobody explained anything or even cared to look at my Stackblitz.
Unsolicited edit, downvote, closevote and of they go - no help provided whatsoever.
Its completely fine if you don't have time to help strangers - but then at least do not stomp on beginners like that.
I immediately regretted asking a toxic community like this something that I genuinely seem to not understand. Wasn't SO about helping people?
I deleted my post there and won't be coming back and doing something productive there anytime soon.
Out of respect for my clients budget I'm now doing it the ugly react way and forget about my software architecture standards but as soon as I can I will advise switching to Angular.
If you made it here: WOW
Thank you for giving me a vent to let off some steam :)13 -
Wow, a Random Rant. Two Parts.
1) It's been my pleasure to discover this site. I visit here far less frequently than I used to, but the shot of sanity it gives me never waivers. Thank you to all the sane people who are members. I don't know you, but you help me to hang on when I really just want to sit in a corner with my face turned to the wall.
2) The new (September 2020) Windows update seems to have its colourful streamers of Fuckery flickerying at us in beautiful Day-Glo grinning contempt. It's been two years since I switched away from Mac. And I gladly take this crap from Microsoft. You don't know how close I came to being sectioned from being a Mac user. Have a good weekend. Peace out.2 -
A coworker of mine was asked to make a utility C# app to help with our internal testing. The idea was that the app would collect data and display the results.
He decided that it was very important that the app have a command line interface. He's spent far more time building the app from scratch for the command line than he would have if he'd used C#'s built-in GUI utilities.
Today was our demo day and he shows an internal command-line app in 2017 built in C#. I asked about the GUI and he said that the command line functionality was more important. I suggested that it was maybe less user-friendly and he proceeded to explain to me how "non-technical" people might prefer a GUI, but clearly any serious developer would just want a command line app.
I feel like, in one fell swoop, he trivialized my suggestion, didn't address any of the data visualization needs, and suggested I wasn't a "real developer". Am I right to feel a little outraged by this?5 -
A dev adds a nice range of categories that content creators can select from. Users get a neat filtering system to restrict the unwanted content.
And then...! People post everything in default category.3 -
Not Speaking The Same Programming Language
(It is the mid 80s, and I have a coworker come to me with two full pages of computer programming source code.)
Coworker: “Hey, can you help me with this? This function is not working right.”
Me: “Sure. What’s it do?”
Coworker: “Well, on the first line I copy…” *drones on for a few seconds about stuff I can clearly read*
Me: “Wait! Let me interrupt for a moment. I can read the code. In 20 words or less, what does this do?“
Coworker: *long pause that tells me he’s having trouble seeing the forest for the trees* “It, um, converts a date that’s a string to three integers: month, day, and year.”
Me: “Ah! Excellent. And by the time you get the string, has it been sanitized? You know, guaranteed to be pairs of digits with a slash in-between, not blanks or words or other garbage?”
Coworker: “Oh, yeah, all the user input is cleaned up.”
Me: “Okay, good.”
(I scribble “sscanf(text, “%02d/%02d/%02d”, &month, &day, &year);” in a blank spot on the page.)
Me: “Throw out everything and replace it with that.”
Coworker: “You’re kidding.”
Me: “Not at all. Use that. It’ll work. Trust me.”
Coworker: *not sure* “Well, okay.”
(Half an hour later he’s back and looking a bit sheepish.)
Coworker: “That worked. Thanks.”
Me: “No problem.”
(It’s been 30 years. Unfortunately, the new generation of programmers is in the same spot.)

Help...
Either help me be more reasonable because I know I'm crazy, or send money/pc parts lol
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/...
I just want my computer to do all the things so if i feel like doing something, I don't need to worry that it can't handle it. (And I know people are going to tell me to use Linux, I will. But i want windows as a backup)36 -
Around 2 years ago, I had first discovered DevRant.
I was an intern in a startup then, and I was working on ElasticSearch. I remember making rants about it. The internship ended. So did my relationship with ElasticSearch.
This week, a new intern joined our organisation (a different organisation). He was assigned the task of deploying ElasticSearch, with me as his mentor. All was going good, we migrated data from MongoDB to ElasticSearch and all.
Back then, I used to curse the team lead (leading a team of interns mostly), for not helping me properly...
I wanted a publicly accessible dashboard, since we can't really see the Kibana dashboard with SSH :P... So, we implemented user authentication using X-Pack security. And here we are, stuck... Again... I'm unable to help the intern. The World has come to a full circle.
PS: I have to just guide him while doing my own User Stories.

Why Microsoft, why.
We have our own Powershell Scripts to delete unwanted apps that are installed from Microsoft on Windows 10, like XBOX app.
I installed a new workstation for a new worker and deleted the apps with the scripts.
The Day the new worker arrived, it was my task to give him an introduction, what Programs we are using and so on.
Worker logs into machine and opens Startmenu.
All Apps that I have deleted with the scripts are back!
Why, you ask. Because Microsoft made it so, that when a new user logs in on a machine he has never been before, every single apps that has been deleted is reinstalled.
I'm searching for a method to shut this down for good.
Help is much appreciated.5 -
Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
...and then feature creep happened. Now I have implemented support for multiple users with different access levels; user profiles; encrypted login system (and encrypted cookies that contain no sensitive data lol) and session handling according to (perceived) best practices; secure password recovery; user-management interface for admins; public, private and group-based sections with multiple categories and posts in each category that can be sorted by sort order value or drag and drop; custom user-created groups where they can give other users access to their sections; notifications; context menus for everything; post & user flagging system, moderation queue and support system; post revisions with comparison between different revisions; support for mobile devices and touch/swipe gestures to open/close menus or navigate between posts; easily extendible css themes with two different dark themes and one ugly as heck light theme; lazy loading of images in posts that won't load until you actually open them; auto-saving of posts in case of browser crash or accidental navigation away from page; plus various other small stuff like syntax highlighting for code, internal post linking, favouriting of posts, free-text filter, no-javascript mode, invitation system, secure (yeah right) image uploading, post-locking...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.

Let's talk a bit about CA-based SSH and TOFU, because this is really why I hate the guts out of how SSH works by default (TOFU) and why I'm amazed that so few people even know about certificate-based SSH.
So for a while now I've been ogling CA-based SSH to solve the issues with key distribution and replacement. Because SSH does 2-way verification, this is relevant to both the host key (which changes on e.g. reinstallation) and user keys (ever replaced one? Yeah that's the problem).
So in my own network I've signed all my devices' host keys a few days ago (user keys will come later). And it works great! Except... Because I wanted to "do it right straight away" I signed only the ED25519 keys on each host, because IMO that's what all the keys should be using. My user keys use it, and among others the host keys use it too. But not by default, which brings me back to this error message.
If you look closely you'd find that the host key did not actually change. That host hasn't been replaced. What has been replaced however is the key this client got initially (i.e. TOFU at work) and the key it's being presented now. The key it's comparing against is ECDSA, which is one of the host key types you'd find in /etc/ssh. But RSA is the default for user keys so God knows why that one is being served... Anyway, the SSH servers apparently prefer signed keys, so what is being served now is an ED25519 key. And TOFU breaks and generates this atrocity of a warning.
This is peak TOFU at its worst really, and with the CA now replacing it I can't help but think that this is TOFU's last scream into the void, a climax of how terrible it is. Use CA's everyone, it's so much better than this default dumpster fire doing its thing.
PS: yes I know how to solve it. Remove .ssh/known_hosts and put the CA as a known host there instead. This is just to illustrate a point.
Also if you're interested in learning about CA-based SSH, check out https://ibug.io/blog/2019/... and https://dmuth.org/ssh-at-scale-cas-... - these really helped me out when I started deploying the CA-based authentication model.

A friend has a small business and asked me if I could make him a small program. So why not, experience for me and I can help a friend out. (This started in ~mid 2016)
Started out as a WPF desktop application with many weird bugs and slow interface, into crashing the database on AWS (could not connect, could not get a backup). It was just hell and I kind of gave up on fixing it.
I always talked to him and said "yeah, I will do something better soon", but I was procrastinating and kept pushing it away from me. Then one day I said "f*ck it - lets go" and started coding on 2.0:
- WebApp with a complete new architecture (which I learned in the past few months)
- User authentication (JWT)
- ASP.NET Core Backend for web api
- Angular 4 Frontend w/ bootstrap
- Coded in like a week with 3-5 hours each day
Deployed around 6 months ago and he never had a complain. When I visited him I asked "how is your application doing?" - "great. it just works!".
My once most hated project turned into the most successful project in just a few months.2 -
I think I might change my middle name to "I told you so"
Couple of weeks ago I proposed integrating a daily process job into an existing WPF application (details of what+why would be too long to explain) and the manager suggested I make the changes
Me: "I can do it, but Jay has the most experience with that application. I don't have his WPF skills"
Mgr: "How hard can WPF be? If it uses the MVVM pattern, it should be a snap."
Me: "Its nearly an 8 year old WPF project with several chefs in that kitchen. I pretty sure I could figure it out, but that is a difference between 2 weeks and 2 days. Integration is pretty straight forward, Jay could probably do it in a day."
DevA: "WPF is easy. MVVM makes it even easier. I worked on the shipping app."
Me: "That's was a brand new, single page app, but yea, it should be easy."
DevB: "WPF has been around a long time and the tools have really matured. I don't understand what is so difficult."
Me: "I didn't say anything would be difficult, I know with that application, there is going to be complexity we need to figure out."
DevB: "It uses the MVVM, so all we need is the user control, a view model, controller, and its done."
DevA: "Sounds easy to me."
Mgr: "If you need more time to work on the vendor project, I'll have DevB work on the integration."
<yesterday>
Me: "How is the integration going?"
DevB: "This app is a mess. I have no idea how they got the control collections to work. If I hard-code everything, I can get it to work. This dynamic stuff is so confusing. Then there is the styling. Its uses dark mode, but no matter what I do, my controls show up in light mode."
Me: "The app uses Prism, so the control configuration is in, or around, the startup code."
DevB: "That makes sense. Will it fix the styling too?"
Me: "I have no idea. When I looked at it, some controls loaded the styles from the main resource, other's have it hard-coded. Different chefs in the kitchen, I guess. How far have you got?"
DevB: "I've created invoice button. That is as far as I got"
Me: "I'm finished with the vendor project and I'll be wrapping up the documentation today. I can try to help next week."
DevB: "Thanks. I think we might have to get Jay to help if we can't figure this out."
Me: "Good idea"
Two weeks and only a button. A button? I miss Delphi.2 -

Hey so this may be a harsh one. Me and my friend are computer science and game development students and he's now in Programming 2 and he's not understanding day 1 concepts (i.e. "you dont have to redefine a variable every time you use it", "That's a string why are you setting it to 0?", "the program needs to take in user string input how would you do that?", etc.) and at this point I don't know how to help him actually understand and retain information. What do I do?13

I gave up and wanted to send them a reply on their help desk and try to log in using one of my other existing zoho accounts. GUESS WHAT? THEIR HELP DESK LOG IN IS NOT WORKING. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I click "Sign In". Login as User or Login as Agent dropdown appear. I click Login as User since my user account is already logged in. It nothing happened. It flashed and I am back at the help desk thread with no changes. It is still "Sign In" at the top. I fucking give up.3 -
Aaaah ! So fuckin done with this Server error !
I am checking if a cookie is set in Php and if it is, I am redirecting user to some page, basically its a 'remember me' logic. But this fucking error comes in everytime my page redirects.
I have a similar logic to check if user is currently logged in the current session, and if he opens a new window and types the url(index.php) he is automatically logged in (obviously, duh !) and redirected,bt it dosent crash at that time!

After coaching for Django Girls organization and GirlScript Summer of Code, it can be known I clearly have a thing for Django. So I decided to make a new Portfolio from scratch and this time, using Django (seemed a good idea as I wanted to migrate my blogs from Medium to the portfolio).
So, I made the project, got a domain name and hosted it on Heroku. Then it struck me to make my portfolio open source so everyone can use it to make their own! I am looking forward to add a lot new features and improve the existing ones. Here’s a link to it: https://github.com/hmangukia/...
Do create an issue if you feel something needs to be improved!
Projects, Blogs and Social Media handles can be added from the admin panel. If the user does not have coding background, the installation process might be tough. That is why, I am looking forward to add the Sign Up functionality so that the user does not have to go through all that hassle of installing and hosting the project.
If you are wishing to use this to make your Portfolio, please go through the installation steps in readme.md. I would be more than happy to help you install and host on Heroku if you get stuck :)5 -
New JoyRant build (38) with a new feature:
Every user that you see in a rant will be stored in a list which can be used for @mentioning and viewing the profile.

Sometimes you just don‘t remember the exact name of a user and hopefully this feature will help.
It might also be a nice summary of how many users are active.12 -
- A girl asks on FB how to deal with a problem in her Windows computer: the system is asking her to introduce the serial key.
- I comment her the possibility of using Linux in case her use cases are simple enough (web, music, videos).
- First reactions are even enthusiastic, some people who had good experiences join the thread to express their delight with Linux.
- Then a guy arrives to tell us how irresponsible we are, telling a poor girl who does not even know how to introduce the serial key... to use Linux (a super complex system!)
- So I tell the guy that Windows is not simple at all, and that most of the times, people just rely o knowing someone else with higher expertise than them, who always end up paying the price of solving the problems caused by Windows, so the users don't really feel how painful is Windows compared to other systems.
- The girl, who was enthusiastic at first, and seems to be not very bright, to say the least, completely misunderstands my answer. She interprets that I'm insulting the poor guys that act as IT service for free, and calls me a "know-all/smartass" (those words are not even close to their Spanish counterpart on pushing down people who know stuff, we are experts on that there, we didn't loose an empire in the 17th century by respecting the wise ones).
This is, in part, why I stopped helping those dumbasses 18 years ago. I forbid myself to learn anything new about Windows (at user level) so I couldn't help these ungrateful and ignorant people who don't make any effort to learn anything by themselves.19 -
I am building a website inspired by devrant but have never built a server network before, and as im still a student I have no industry experience to base a design on, so was hoping for any advice on what is important/ what I have fucked up in my plan.
The attached image is my currently planned design. Blue is for the main site, and is a cluster of app servers to handle any incoming requests.
Green is a subdomain to handle images, as I figured it would help with performance to have image uploads/downloads separated from the main webpage content. It also means I can keep cache servers and app servers separated.
Pink is internal stuff for logging and backups and probably some monitoring stuff too.
Purple is databases. One is dedicated for images, that way I can easily back them up or load them to a cache server, and the other is for normal user data and posts etc.
The brown proxy in the middle is sorta an internal proxy which the servers need to authenticate with to connect to, that way I can just open the database to the internal proxy, and deny all other requests, and then I can have as many app servers as I want and as long as they authenticate with the proxy, they can access the database without me changing any firewall rules. The other 2 proxies just distribute requests between the available servers in the pool.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced :D

Done and redone but it's been a long time coming and it's my turn : fuck you StackOverflow.
I've been a member for a few years, and I hate the elitist idiotic community. Some people are there to help, most of them are just there to wank on their reputation.
Whenever you ask a question that is tiny bit specific, you are almost certain to have a vote to close it because "it's too vague" -even though I spent 30mn writing it with comprehensive examples, clean formatting and other users understood it perfectly as demonstrated by their comments trying to help- or any other reason that scream "I didn't understand the question or don't have the answer therefore it's a bad question"
If you are "lucky", a power user will just mark it as duplicate of another question that barely uses the same stack as yours and has one keyword in common because this illiterate fuck couldn't bother to read the full question detailing why it's not a duplicate but, oh surprise, the question they referred yours too already has an accepted answer by themselves. Abusing their reputation-bestowed powers to reference themselves for some more reputation.
Now that I am over 1k in reputation and have all 3 colours of badges, it seems like it warrants a bit more attention from the swarm and it doesn't happen as often. Which is appalling in itself, basically if you don't have enough shinys, your are considered a worthless piece of crap barely tolerated to ask questions.
The fact that big reputation users have so much power and can absolutely not be held accountable for their abusive behaviour is a recipe for power abuse3 -
Avoid ACPICA if at all possible. It's one garbage tier cluster fuck of bad design, horrible documentation and downright misleading and wrong code
It's meant to consist of an ASL compiler, disassembler, debugger, dumper, various user space utitilies and a kernel resident OSPM implementation *if* you can figure out what belongs to what. Even just compiling this pile of trash is a mystery in itself. Think you need the source files in source/common? EEEEH, wrong. Well, at least partially since most of them seem to be for the user space stuff..? Other ones *are* needed on the other hand. At least the disassembler and/or debugger and/or dumper components seem to reference them. Not that I could figure out how to compile those anyways. The real path to your goal seems to be to ignore a seemingly arbitrary subset of source and header files until your linker stops complaining
There's also a bunch of configuration defines, some of which *you* define, some defined *for* you, based on again others. Of course most of them do stupid shit. Enabling the debugger automatically enables debug logging. Enabling the disassembler force enables debug allocation tracking... What?
The code itself isn't of much help either. Looking in "os_specific/service_layers" you find what looks to be reference implementations of acpica functions in certain os' like windows and unix. Of course I had a look because AcpiOsReadMemory is supposed to read physical memory and I don't know how I would even implement that. But hey, osunixxf.c (xf for interface... of course) should tell me. I'll let you see for yourself in the attached image. Apparently it does fuck all and just returns AE_OK. No error, no logging, no nothing. Just ok. As you can imagine, AcpiOsWriteMemory doesn't do much more either.
...okay so maybe physical memory accesses aren't actually used and these functions are some sort of relic from past times? Nope! They are absolutely necessary for doing low level device interaction. WTF. So finally I went to the linux source and checked how *they* implemented them, and just as I thought, these functions are anything but no-ops...
...So for what fucking reason do these stupid interface implementations even exist but to purposefully mislead you?? They aren't used for fucking anything! As far as I know Windows doesn't even *use* ACPICA and Linux have their own fork with working implementations... They just sit there, just to tell you how to NOT do it
So that's some of my thoughts about ACPICA. Note that I haven't even used it as a library yet, I just got it to compile and link and it already fucked with me this much.
There's also so much more I didn't mention like that you *have* to modify the acpica source in order to get your own platform header working (else #error) eventhough the docs explicitely instruct you not too but you get the point
Don't use ACPICA if you don't have to. Save your sanity for something that's worth it

I continue to internally read and study about Smalltalk in an effort to see where we might have FUCKED UP and went backwards in terms of software engineering since I do not believe that complex source code based languages are the solution.
So I have Pharo. Nothin to complex really, everything is an object, yet, you do have room for building DSL's inside of it over a simple object model with no issue, the system browser can be opened across multiple screens (morph windows inside of a smalltalk system) for which you can edit you code in composable blocks with no issues. Blocks being a particular part of the language (think Ruby in more modern features) give ample room for functional programming. Thus far we have FP and OO (the original mind you) styles out in the open for development.
Your main code can be executed and instantly ALTER the live environment of a program as it is running, if what you are trying to do is stupid it won't affect the live instance, live programming is ahead of its time, and impressive, considering how old Smalltalk is. GUI applications can be given headless (this is also old in terms of how this shit was first distributed) So I can go ahead and package the virtual machine with the entire application into a folder, and distribute it agains't an organization "but why!!!! that package is 80+ mbs!") yeah cuz it carries the entire virtual machine, but go ahead and give it to the Mac user, or the Linux user, it will run, natively once it is clicked.
Server side applications run in similar fashion to php, in terms of lifecycles of request and how session storage is handled, this to me is interesting, no additional runtimes, drop it on a server, configure it properly and off you go, but this is common on other languages so really not that much of a point.
BUT if over a network a user is using your application and you change it and send that change over the network then the the change is damn near instant and fault tolerant due to the nature of the language.
Honestly, I don't know what went wrong or why we are not bringing this shit to the masses, the language was built for fucking kids, it was the first "y'all too stupid to get it, so here is simple" engine and we still said "nah fuck it, unlimited file system based programs, horrible build engines and {}; all over the place"
I am now writing a large budget managing application in Pharo Smalltalk which I want to go ahead and put to test soon at my institution. I do not have any issues thus far, other than my documentation help is literally "read the source code of the package system" which is easy as shit since it is already included inside. My scripts are small, my class hierarchies cover on themselves AND testing is part of the system. I honestly see no faults other than "well....fuck you I like opening vim and editing 300000000 files"
And honestly that is fine, my questions are: why is a paradigm that fits procedural, functional and OBVIOUSLY OO while including an all encompassing IDE NOT more famous, SELECTION is fine and other languages are a better fit, but why is such environment not more famous?9 -
It took me way too long to understood what I wrote few weeks ago. After looking at the code for few minutes and looking at my db structure, I finally realized. I also instantly remembered that I wrote that "user is shown as ad" comment hoping I will not confuse myself in future. Apparently I failed.
Temporarily added next line of comment to help the future me.
Deep down I know that I should change function name itself to become clearer, more meaningful and easier to understand.
But writing that comment, making those screenshots, combining the 2 images in Pinta and writing this rant is faster than thinking the new name.

(Long post)
ARE YOU SERIOUS??
I never really used Facebook but I did use Instagram until around a month ago when GDPR kicked in and they asked every user about their age. For shits and giggles I entered "1 year old" which was followed by the app crashing every time I open it and on the web site a message like this:
"You are too young to use Instagram. You will have 14 days until your account gets deleted. If you think we made a mistake you can send us your personal id."
As if I sent anything personal to FB on purpose! Then so it be, I said. I downloaded my data (images and account details) and after two weeks I couldn't login anymore and I checked on a friend's phone within Instagram: My account was gone.
NOW LOOK WHAT I GOT TODAY:
A NEWSLETTER from Instagram! "Check out new posts by X, Y and 8 others!"
Now, these aren't new... I would get these emails when I havent logged in for a while. But seriously? My accounts should be GONE!
Sooo I logged in again. And when I tried I got this (freely translated):
"Apparently, you requested to delete this account. For more information, visit the help area: http://help.instagram.com/ (403) (/accounts/login/ajax/)"
So that's it. Yeah sure, "deleted". I didn't request the delete, Instagram did so on it's own. So it doesn't even listen to it's own commands...
Guys, where is this world heading5 -
I am in love.
I am in love with all the guys and girls working at Microchip support.
I am the kind of user that does not really understand what he's doing/what he wants to do, so I am constantly stuck in stupid configuration errors or looking for impossible solutions, yes I am THAT kind of a user...
Here is a PWM working, a support guy spent some minutes telling me that I have to connect to the right pin.
Ok, he had to tell me twice.😳
Thank you, it may have taken me days to find out this.
They does not know, but there is a HUGE amount of decreasing dumb question incoming 😈
Please be kind with me, and don't get mad when things will get serious, I will probably bring hell in your office, I am very sorry for that...
Still, thank you for helping the dumbest learner-by-mistake that doesn't know how to recognize a mistake.
I can't write this in the ticket system, I hope someone of you use devRant! (atsame54 office, I am talking with you!)
You are my stack overflow, and the project I will develop with your help is quite the only thing left before my graduate.
I will owe you so much beers, love you guys!!!

Company is about to get certified to ISO 9001:
Kick-off meeting with consultant announced weeks ago, mandatory for all employees.
Everyone is kind of joking about it, but also looking forward to certain workflows maybe changing to the better.
Two hours before meeting, told by CTO not to attend.
Some code I hadn't touched for half a year needs urgent patching to make the equipment pass EMC test (doing so within a few hours would help us save the lab cost for another day of testing).
When they applied RF noise to the bus lines, the CAN peripheral would glitch and need reset, this should happen covertly the first few times without raising any error to the user, so they could just finish the testing without being disturbed by the error - and the EMC lab will not test the functionality of the device after all.
The irony when you were actually supposed to learn about quality that day... -
It's been two months since I've left my previous job, after 1.5 years. I never had the feeling my boss trusted his dev team, since he was checking up on us regularly, even though we had planned out a sprint and work for us was "clear". I say "clear", because every single feature on this project was pretty much half-baked, since they were just ideas our boss/PO (same person) on the spot and were labeled as "the next big thing" without every properly writing them out as user stories. Every demo came with a bunch of criticism, because features weren't implemented "as he imagined", because what do you know, the user stories weren't properly described anyway. Bringing that up as counter-argument also made him angry every time, so that didn't help much either. The launch of the platform was also postponed every time because of vague reasons, so that didn't make the project any more interesting either.
It took a while before I got sick of this of this pretty hopeless situation and toxic environment. Mind you, it was my first job since I graduated, so I was a bit naive thinking the working environment would improve and aforementioned company issues would be resolved over time. Eventually, I ran out of patience and motivation, so I finally bit the bullet and handed in my resignation letter.
From that moment, I at least had an end in sight, since I was still obliged to do my four-week notice period, which felt like an eternity. The borderline childish and sociopathic behaviour of my boss didn't make it any better (e.g. checking up on me even more, more mistrust, randomly accusing me of ruining the working atmosphere because I shared a meme with a colleague of mine and didn't involve him, going lunching with all of my colleagues but explicitly asking me to stay at work, ...). Being forced to work from home the last 2 weeks as part of the country's lockdown measures at least helped my sanity a bit, since I had the comfort of my home office and not the frequent "looking over your shoulders to check if you're still working".
By the last day of my notice period, I was bitter, exhausted, lost confidence in my skills and had completely lost my joy of being a developer. I had to physically meet with my boss one more time to hand in the company laptop. He thanked me for my service and said that we'd keep in touch. I hope I won't keep that promise (he made a lot of false promises before, too), because I'd rather never encounter him ever again. It felt like a huge relief to finally close the door of this bad experience behind me for good.
Now, 2 months later, I've got a new job and rediscovered my joy for coding, mostly thanks to the complete opposite of a toxic environment here, management which actually has respect and faith in me and a challenging but fun project. My mental state has made a complete turnaround compared to two months ago. I have absolutely no regrets of switching jobs. If only I had made that decision sooner.4 -
I guess the time has come finally. 🤔
I'm now thinking of how to trace a Facebook user's current location. At first I thought of touching Facebook.
But then I thought that I can just write a webpage which will trace the visitor IP. And send the url to the user.
Oh it's not for me. One of my friends who is also a partner and a client of mine is being harassed by his former business partner. He has sued him but the guy is in hiding but still posting bad news on his Facebook profile.
So my friend came to me for help. :311 -
After deleting an AskUbuntu question due to peer pressure pointing out that it is "off-topic because parts are off-topic, and parts are written as a rant in disguise", I decided that DevRant is where to repost this instead:
As a user, how can I make sure to keep my applications as a user without keeping obsolete software packages?
Upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellifish) using the Software Updater GUI removes a working installation of the zoom video meeting application, without installing any upgrade, during the "cleanup" step.
Unfortunately, we can only choose either to remove or keep all suggested removals. While every other removal seemed fine and had a good explanation (either an outdated version number or the move to update Firefox via snap packages in the future), only zoom, at the end of the list, was scheduled for removal without any replacement.
After proceeding with the removals and restarting my computer, as expected, zoom is gone.
I am posting this to inform others before the upgrade, but also trying to help solve the problem, so that either there should be an option to select which packages to keep or remove (maybe there is when using the command line instead of the GUI?) or not to suggest to remove zoom at all. If it had been removed as an outdated third-party source without official 22.04 support, it would have been helpful to communicate that more explicitly.
As the latest zoom version, 5.12.2 (4816) deb (for Ubuntu 16.04+), obviously supports everything from 16.04, there should be no reason at all to remove zoom when upgrading an Ubuntu distribution.

I feel like 75% of stories here are about high schools. Maybe it’s because of the younger user base but also I think school security is beyond woeful.
I can’t even tell if my school just botched the setup or if the vendor thought it’d be a sick joke but we had software that the teacher would use to remotely look at everyone doing work but we found that if you press the help button it opens the same window where you see everyone’s desktops and can mess with them (how trivial, I know).4 -
Some weeks back I mentioned (in a comment) my small program capable of editing the tags in audio files based on the filename.
Today, I had some spear time and implemented it in Go (the original version was Ruby).
For people that are interested, here is a link to the repo: https://github.com/SirWindfield/...
Any help/feedback is appreciated!
I promised someone to mention him if I get to publish it. But I forgot his user name :(9 -
My mom is a basic user that needs to use only basic apps to chat and speak with family, post photos and play one or two games.
She is always ranting about how difficult is to do simple things. And she is mostly right.
Like, where are my fucking photos gone?
Why is facebook/whasapp/whatever different today, where are the fucking buttons gone?
what the fuck happened (when while clicking something a update windows popup and you click something else). Why the buttons are so small (when you want to close a fucking ad windows with a little invisible fucking "x" somewhere and you click the ad instead)?
I don't want no fucking cookies.
Why after windows update my fucking game doesn't work anymore. Why I can't hear anything through the fucking skype?
The fact that she knows I'm one of the moron who builds kind of not-usable and buggy fucking things, doesn't help.2 -
We had a project with a web app and an Android app. We split it out, he took the web and I was working on Android. He was very curious to do the project with me and very motivated at the beginning. We agreed on our first module that was user authentication. After some time when I told him that first module of app is ready and asked him on his progress, (When ever we had a talk he pretend like every thing is going fluently, though I continously told him ask for help if needed ) he opened a folder in vs code containing two files "index.html" and "style.css" and showed me the "login & sign up" design he was doing for days. I have no option but to appreciate his work. On that day I created new folder on my machine "web application" and started working.3

Wtf is this? I searched for my problem and have to pay money to see the answer an 'expert' gave to another user who needed help? And I don't even know if it would solve my problem. That's definitely a great marketing strategy.

"Help" messages that are only shown once are not so helphul.
Some software and websites have help pop-ups and tooltips that are only displayed on the first use and then never again. There is no option to show it again.
That is a terrible idea, because the user might want to see it again as a reminder.
Showing something to the user only once means expecting the user to memorize it all at once.8 -
I want to cry... Fuck it.. shiit. .. :( :( ;(
Wasted half of the Weekend to Setup MySQL on my vServer which uses ssl encryption, have specific User and so on.
Thought: well, the User mysql is not so good as a Name. Drop it, you don't need it.
What did I? Instead of Drop User mysql , I typed Drop Database mysql.
Fuck that fucking Shit. I'm so sad right now. Broked the complete MySQL Database. Nothing is working anymore. And the server is new, I've Just made One Backup. Deleted this a few hours ago.. also accidently.
Help me :( Shit :( so sad :( Now, I don't have Motivation anymore to work with the vServer :(3 -
So, we (I'm the backend guy and work with a UI dev) are building this product portfolio management tool for our client and they have a set of 250 users. The team has two point of contacts for the 250 users who maintain the master data, help users with data quality, tool guidance, reporting and other stuff. So one day one of these two support users come to me and say : Hey I'm not able to add new transactions coz a customer is missing.
We have the provision to create / maintain customers.
I check the production DB, application code, try creating the customer and then the transaction, everything works perfectly fine.
I ask the user for a screen sharing session, the user starts reproducing the error like this :
We have a 3 system landscape - Dev / Test and Prod
U : Logs into the test system url, creates the customer.
U : Points out the toast saying customer creation is successful.
U : opens a new tab, opens the production system, tries creating the transaction, searches for the customer and says " see !! cant find the customer here ! the master data management apps never work !! "

I have an issue with my Laravel routing. Can you help me out, @bittersweet?
I have a custom "/home" route called "/admin" and I set the protected property in the LoginController:
$redirectTo = "/admin";
And it works fine, if I log in from guest. But when I navigate to "/login" as auth-user it still redirects me to "/home".
What the fuck is this? What do I have to change to make this work? Who has to be fucked? Is it possible to solve this without sacrificing a virgin at bloodmoon? And why are Platypus so fucking ugly?14 -
I once had a user email the help desk, explaining in a rather twisted and confusing way his issue. He signed the end of it with "shibboleet" (xkcd reference). I called him, because there was no way I'd be able to go over it through email, and for nearly an hour we totally nerded out over it together, working through it. At the end of our conversation, he said he couldn't believe the shibboleet thing was real! I confessed that I was first level and he'd happened to have asked about a thing that was of personal interest and hobby of mine... and catching the reference was the icing, that I wanted to play along.

I forgot my password to my mindfactory account, one of Germany's biggest online vendor for computer components. So I go through the resetting process, which is:
- apply for password reset
- get a mail
- confirm the mail
(So far, so good)
- get a mail with a new CLEAR TEXT PASSWORD
Is this the stone age!?
You never send an email containing the cleartext! You never even store the password as is!
You, as the provider, should never be able to know what the actual password was.
All you are supposed to do is to generate a random salt, and hash the user's password with the salt, and then you only store the salt and the hash. And whenever a user inputs their password, all you do is to check if the you can recreate the hash with the help of the salt and your hash algorithm. (There are libraries for that!)
If a user wants to reset their password? Send them to a mail with link on where they can assign a new password.
At no point should the password ever be stored or transmitted in any other medium.5 -

Just got an internship a few days ago. The manager threw a project at me. I have to do it alone. It's a user-system (registration, login etc.) The front-end is ready. And I have to build its back-end in PHP. I started to draw the project on paper (pseudocode) and then asked a few questions about design patterns to jump into coding. They recommended me Laravel. I'm good at PHP (procedural) and have done some basic OOP. I've actually built a few projects in Python using OOP. But I've never used any framework (yeah, I know). So I started to learn Laravel and realized that it's very different than normal PHP (procedural or even normal OOP). I almost don't write any normal PHP code. This makes me confused. But I have to learn it fast and well, and finish the project to hit the deadline and get the full-time job. I'm desperately looking for any kind of help to learn Laravel more effectively! I've googled and got some recommendations. But I need more live help from devs directly.5

i often do tech support in chat rooms in my free time (because i like spreading good will,) so here's a tech horror story

sure?

did you install the drivers? Sounds like it needs drivers
"no"
then install them
"no"
why not?
"it doesn't need any"
why do you say that?
"it said \"This device is set up and ready to use.\" in the balloon in the corner"
it has generic drivers to deal with devices before the real drivers can be found
"shouldn't they work?"
some devices need the extra support provided by the intended drivers, so the generic ones cause issues in those cases
"ok, well, where do I find them?"
do you have a model number?
"yes, it's " # scrubbed for... privacy? i dunno
gimme a few minutes
<insert 45 minutes of aggressive Googling for (str(DEVICE_MODEL_NUMBER) + " xp drivers")>
alright i have the drivers, go here:

"they don't work"
# oh here we go
why not?
"These drivers are not compatible with your system architecture."
what version of XP are you using?
"XP Pro"

Please don't get triggered by stupid little things on the internet, just shutdown your internet device and go outside and get some fresh air
I've read some answers on forums on the internet and some people that answer ends up making another problem, because the user said something or whatever
If you want to help, then follow these rules:
1) Read the problem that the user has
2) Read what they have tried to fix it
3) If you know about that problem then answer it
4) If you don't know... just move on

Old old organization makes me feel like I'm stuck in my career. I'm hanging out with boomer programmers when I'm not even 30.
I wouldn't call myself an exceptional programmer. But the way the organization does it's software development makes me cringe sometimes.
1. They use a ready made solution for the main system, which was coded in PL/SQL. The system isn't mobile friendly, looks like crap and cannot be updated via vendor (that you need to pay for anyway) because of so many code customizations being done to it over the years. The only way to update it is to code it yourself, making the paid solutions useless
2. Adding CloudFlare in the middle of everything without knowing how to use it. Resulting in some countries/networks not being able to access systems that are otherwise fine
3. When devs are asked to separate frontend and backend for in house systems, they have no clue about what are those and why should we do it (most are used to PHP spaghetti where everything is in php&html)
4. Too dependent on RDBMS that slows down development time due to having to design ERD and relationships that are often changed when users ask for process revisions anyway
5. Users directly contact programmers, including their personal whatsapp to ask for help/report errors that aren't even errors. They didn't read user guides
6. I have to become programmer-sysadm-helpdesk-product owner kind of thing. And blamed directly when theres one thing wrong (excuse me for getting one thing wrong, I have to do 4 kind of works at one time)
7. Overtime is sort of expected. It is in the culture
If you asked me if these were normal 4 years ago I would say no. But I'm so used to it to the point where this becomes kinda normal. Jack of all trades, master of none, just a young programmer acting like I was born in the era of PASCAL and COBOL9 -

To create an abstraction simple enough to make complex business logic challenges solvable for non programmers.
The issue I see today is programmers solving problems they don't understand as well as the user. I think two ways might be taken:
- Programmers specialize in other fields and solve problems there
- Other professionals create their own software
Both will happen in the future (IMHO) and I want to help the second happening.
Note: Excel does this really well, but I think we can so quite better today.1 -
Friends, gather round for a story of "the user".
Two days ago I assisted a friend in reviving their scammed Instagram account with final confirmation it was back in their possession yesterday. I stated "make sure you clean out phone numbers, emails and change the password. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T USE THE SAME PASSWORD"....I bet you know where this is going....
Queue 6:45am: "HELP! THEY DID IT AGAIN! THEY TOOK MY FACEBOOK THIS TIME TOO!" as a safety measure, I told her to link them for recoverability.....not thinking you just created a bridge to the facebook...
Now We're going through EVERY account BY HAND and changing EVERY password for EVERY service and enabling MFA. We've also learned the power that the forgot password button wields for everyone.
ProTip: If your friend was "hacked" be patient, friendly and soft to get every detail...sometimes you learn more and can position them better.
Now I'm upset with myself because I couldn't save their accounts and at this point we've lost the only footing we had to them. Social Media is a curse.1 -
Cybersecurity firm Sophos announced that it has open-sourced the Sandboxie Windows sandbox-based isolation utility. According to the reports of Bleeping Computer: Sandboxie was developed by Ronen Tzur and released on June 26, 2004, as a simple utility to help run Internet Explorer within a secure and isolated sandbox environment. Later, Tzur upgraded Sandboxie to also support sandboxing any other Windows applications that required a secure virtual sandbox.
Sophos Director of Product Marketing Seth Geftic said "We are thrilled to give the code to the community. The Sandboxie tool has been built on many years highly-skilled developer work and is an example of how to integrate with Windows at a very low level. The Sandboxie user base represents some of the most passionate, forward-thinking, and knowledgeable members of the security community, and we hope this announcement will spawn a fresh wave of ideas and use cases."
You can download Sandboxie and its source code here.

I just spent 2-3 hours writing a python script to make it easier to format solving system of equations through Gaussian elimination easier. It takes a matrix, then allows the user to perform row operations on it, and then it formats every operation done into LaTeX.

after exploring a lot of ui frameworks and architectures, i am trying to go back to android dev but again with the curiosity for the one single question that i had at the start of my career 5 years back : why is it's ui so complex?
can anyone help me understand it?
like comparing with the most basic ui framework : html/css/js, why android is so different? we got activities, fragments and views. the worst thing in android is lifecycles, that each of these ui components have.
The view lifecycle is simple to get over with : whatever is the lifecycle of its parent, is the lifecycle of view.
a view's parent is another view, whose parent is another view, whose parent is... and so on until we reach the root view which is stored by either a fragment or activity
therefore a view's lifecycle = lifecycle of activity or fragment
till here its very clear. the fuckup is simply in the next part:
WTAF is activity ?WTAF is fragment? why are their various functions called in the sequence they are called? oncreate, on start, onstartview, ondestroy... why?
activity is still somewhat okay, but fragment is completey weird af : it can be a part of activity: basically it can cover your complete screen and behave as an activity itself (so you don't get to say that activity === screen and fragment === view) AND IT HAS ITS OWN FUCKING LIFECYCLES! So does that mean fragment's fucntions cna also be called by OS?
what's more mind fucking, is the fact that android activity can destroy/pause or recreate fragments on its own, by some "views" like viewpager , or even hold multiple fragments as "alive" at the same time, using something called a "backstack" ??!??!
and each of these fragments in the stack can be called by system at any time? like wtf???
all these stuff is super confusing and i haven't even scratched the surface. the newer , more complicated stuff like viewmodel, livedata and again "lifecycles" has a complete seperate behavior and functionality of their own. plus the various "reality-check" scenarios like: when a user is streaming a video in picture-in-picture mode while keeping your app in split screen with maps in the second split, when a call comes and the video keeps running, and user rotates the device, let me know the clusterfuck situation for the 3rd fragment in your 5 icon navigation view currently at the payment page with 2 fragments and 1 activity in backstack!!!
god bless thy soul for this shitty framework isn't going anywhere , rather its super strong and getting more clusterfucked with new beautiful shit everyday.
(if someone can ignore my gentle language, i would really like to know/get redirected to some resources where i can learn more on this)3 -
South Africa Release notes version v3.0.2
In 1994 SA underwent one of the biggest system upgrades since 1948. In this new rolling release since the system update called apartheid the system has been annexing resources, locking it down, making it closed source, closing it off community updates and from global updates and minimizing services across the board. On 27 April 1994, the new democratic system update was released with a new system monitor, release resources and balancing efficiency in the system. Though there were remnants of the old code in the system, it was being rewritten by a new generation of users, open source resources were established, giving users the right to choose among themselves how to grow the system , and how to better the experience for all.
In 1999 a new system monitor was created by the users, it wasnt as popular as the ground breaking Madiba release but it was a choice by the community to move forward and grow. The system was stable for a few years, new users were able to develop more on the system, making it more lucrative monetary wise. There were still remnants of the apartheid code but the new generation of developers worked with it making it there own, though they had not yet had admin rights to help change the system, they created a developer culture of their own. A new system resources balancer was introduced called BBEE, that allowed previous disadvantage users more admin rights to other system resources, helping the user base to grow. Though the balancer was biased, and flawed it has helped the system overall to grow and move forward. It has major holes in security and may flood some aspects of the system with more outdated software patches, users have kept it in its system releases until the resource balancer moved the system into a more stable position.
The next interim system monitor release was unexpected, a quiet release that most users did not contribute towards. The system monitor after that nearly brought the system down to a halt, as it was stealing resources from users, using resources for its own gain, and hasn't released any of it back to the system.
The latest user release has been stable. It has brought more interest from users from other countries, it had more monetary advantages than all other releases before. Though it still has flaws, it has tried to balance the system thus far.
Bug report as of 16 Feb 2018
*User experience has been unbalanced since the 1994 release, still leaving some users at a disadvantage.
*The three tier user base that the 1948 release established, creating three main user groups, created a hierarchy of users that are still in effect today, thought the 1994 release tried to balance it out, the user based reversed in its hierarchy, leaving the middle group of users where they were.
*System instability has been at an all time low, allowing users to disable each others accounts, effectively
killing" them off
*Though the infrastructure of the system has been upgraded to global standards ( in some aspects ) expansions are still at an all time low
*Rogue groups of users have been taking most of the infrastructure from established users
*Security services have been heightened among user groups though admins were still able to do as they pleased without being reprimanded
*Female users have been kicked off the system at an alarming rate, the security services have only kicked in recently, but the system admins and system monitor has not done anything about it yet
Bug fixes for a future release:
*Recreating the overall sysadmin team. Removing some admins and bringing others in
*Opening the system more globally to stabilize it more
*Removing and revamping the BBEE system, replacing it with more user documentation, equalizing the user base
*Giving more resources to users that were at a disadvantage during the first release
*Giving the middle group of users more support, documentation and advantages in the system, after removing the security protocols from the user base
*Giving new users who grew up with the post 1994 release more opportunities to help grow the system on a level playing field.
*Establishing the Madiba release principles more efficiently in the current system1 -
Real, seriously honest feedback wanted.
What do you do when you are stuck at a place that has potential but it is being run by someone with the wrong idea?
For example: not to toot my own horn, but I shine at front end Development. Not just slicing up designs, but seriously creating amazing user experiences. And honestly, there is no shortage of work for that ... every client we have has an expectation that their site or application will look awesome. And we have some very big clients.
That said, the manager truly believes that we are all inter-changeable and should have no preference. As a result, John Doe over there who has zero ability in front end gets tasked with building the front end of what should be an amazing app... while I eventually get tasked with some sitecore bullshit that I have no interest in.
And it goes on and on and on.
It is no coincidence that anytime the dice land on me for front end, it wins an award and always ends with an awesome thank you from the customer.
I am not sure what to do, because it just makes no sense to me. And this is just one example of the mismanagement.
Any help?2 -
I've been given a huge stack of paper, some users stories and loose specs. Was tasked with engineering the specific requirements, then the models and finally the database. Then I need to build an API on top of that.
Stuff I'll use is Go and Postgresql. Small issue is, I've never done DBs, so I've no idea what to do or where to start.
Does anyone have any resources to help kick-start myself in this field? I've been reading on SQL, but that doesn't really tell me anything about data structures and how to transform those user stories into product requirements.6 -
Random guy messages me on WhatsApp that he needs help, that his friend told him I'm good at blah blah blah.........
the issue: he paid for some random php bitcoin thingy blah blah, sent me a link to the site, pretty straightforward instructions on how to use it. I explained everything to him and he says he wants to tweak the php script before he puts it out.
me: then do it
him: how do I start?
me(in my head): did you not think of this before paying for the script?!
also me: oh well, download xampp, good for beginners, easy to setup.
him: not working! please help me
I knew from the onset that he was a windows user.
he started by running it without admin privileges
I had no idea and kept solving problems that didn't exist until I asked him to snap the log, after explaining how to run a software as administrator, we Solved it
port 80 was taken. had to go through the process of changing the ports, I had to validate every single change.
going through the procedure of reinstalling because he installed to some crappy directory. after all the headaches and then redoing all the processes stated above, it still doesn't work.
one final solution left and I am dropping him like a hot potato. I must have close to a hundred pictures of someone's screen on my phone.
little question: when he types localhost on his browser windows IIS page thingy pops up. I was thinking of changing the server name to localserver: new port address6 -

OK then, implement some try-catch and add a warning message to the user.
let's try it out... alright, message works, close message and app crashes
-Tsc... dammit
search for the bug in code... "uncaught FormatException on line 899 Convert.ToInt(string, v)"
what the...
wait a minute, ~ Ctrl + F ~ - "Convert.ToInt"

Is It just me feel that open-source engineers angry all the time?
Here’s the story. In some open-source repositories, things can get pretty toxic.
Story 1: Someone reported a real problem in an open-source repo. The maintainer replied rudely, saying “Irrelevant, I dont care, will not fix.” So I fixed the issue myself and made a pull request. The owner ignored it (that’s okay), but the person who reported the issue used my fork instead and it worked fucking fine.
story 2: GitHub Issues is starting to feel like Stack Overflow......Some engineers / contributors are rude to users who just want help. A user asked a simple question that didn’t have an answer online, because the framework just worked that way. The engineers could have guided them or fixed it, but instead they said things like Get out or Go ask ChatGPT or Google it.
To be fair ,I understand engineers get tired of spam and useless issues like redundant , but we should still respect people who ask real questions or try to help, well common decency.
If these were my projects, I will treat te contributors, users, and followers with respect .4 -
Calling in all Vue devs here! (Possibly any SPA dev actually)
We're building these fancy live-edit fields for our app. It syncs with the database with every keypress (with a debounce, ofc). Now, we're having a global Vuex module to keep track of the applications sync state. Using this module, we can prevent the user from leaving the page if there is data that hasn't been synced. Though, I think I'm doing something wrong here, and not strictly adhering to the "single source of truth"-principle.
When a user has finished typing, a request is made through Axios. When the response arrives, the field issuing the request updates it's display accoring to the response. However, there is also an Axios interceptor which updates the global state to reflect the latest response. Is this wrong? Should the fields themselves emit the mutation to the store? Or is it okay to use an interceptor since they're running down the same call stack?
I think my biggest worry here is that the interceptor and the field will interpret the response differently...
Help is appreciated :D (and thanks for taking the time)18 -
I'm making an interface where I have a few columns, much like Trello. In each column there are cards. I want the user to be able to drag these cards an place them in any column, in any order they want. The problem is that at the same time they should be able to sort each column on date or whatever. Do you guys have any ideas on how to deal with the clash between custom sorting and auto sorting? Like what happens when you're in date sorting, and you change the order of the cards?
The implementation/programming is no problem. I just need help to figure out the interaction logic behind it.
Thanks... :)5 -
i'm starting a project where i will have a large amount audio clips, anywhere from a few seconds to about an hour long, and i need to store them based on which user created them and what group they are created in (so they will be sorted based on two integers). i'll need to concatenate and/or merge the audio files frequently, and i may need to filter which audio i use based on users and time created.
how should i store the audio? i'm pretty sure a database is the best option, but should i consider using the file system? if i shant, should i use mysql or postgres? i know postgres has more types and supports complex queries.
does anyone have experience who can help?8 -
My coworker cannot log in to his company email account. So I contacted the guys in charge of this by email, asking if they could help and asked whats the process now or how does this work. I assume if his email is not working, they cannot send him a password reset link.
their answer: yeah, sure, we reseted the password of the mentioned user, here is his new password5 -

Yet again: why are Open Source maintainers so rude with newbies?
My first contact with this was with the rude-wall Graham Campbell from the Laravel projects. I don't have the links anymore, but I recall a specific issue where, after a couple of passive-aggressive messages from both sides, he agreed he started stuff with the wrong foot and he's usually rude in the first place - and then we were able to actually discuss the issue.
Now I am a newbie on Home Assistant and was clueless on why an add-on wasn't working... I found an issue on GitHub with the same problem and no actual solution, and locked... So I opened a new one, wrote a ton of stuff, only to find a crude "provide logs" with no help on how to achieve that. Turns out the developer does acknowledge he's an asshole "at first sight" in how own profile.
So... why?
Is this hatred for newbie questions, without recalling they were also one at some point in their lives?
Are these cocky developers, full of themselves and their important projects (no irony on "important", they are indeed), that can't think of issue reporters as "an actual human being on the other side of the screen"?
Maybe just another symptom of internet interactions?
I totally acknowledge I got rude after his answers, but I still had an honest interest on helping the project from a user POV and he just don't give a damn, probably since he got hatred by my person after showing newbieness?

Hello, can someone help me with this one ? I guess that the fucking SO elitist community would have beaten me to death if I asked this question.
I'm trying to create a relational table between a Tutorial object and a User object (to know which tutorial the user has access to) using Sequelize, and I figure out that I have two PRIMARY keys in my table. How is it possible ? UserID is also marked as Index.

I made a Linux Command Library/Help App for Android and iOS a while ago. In the app I give the user the possibility to request missing commands. A lot of useful feedback and commands arrived since then but apparently some people think I know and can just give them a command to hack entire facebook. like wtf :D

Thank you those who tried to help me with my problem but I'm still not the best at this even though I've been doing for quite some time. I'm sorry I used some much of your time earlier also I apologize for calling out @example-user3

tl;dr i am proud of my universal program but annoyed it won't get appreciation.
<brag type='slightly'>the last three days i refactored my various snippets to a kind of modular and scalable software package. restricted to a rigid company system i make use of the technologies i feel confident in. so i created a javascript app that can be used with internet explorer. it is a neat tool to work smarter and mainly to make repetitive writing tasks efficient using predefined textblocks that have automated linguistic adjustments and are multilingual usable. after refactoring it is possible to extend any desired functionality by just adding another module. i learned a lot about implementing separated data structures, data processing, output and asynchronous script loading (and the annoying limitations of ie11).</brag>
i kept in mind that this tool might not only help my personal duties to be done more efficient but also might come in handy to all my colleagues having similar tasks to do. the downside is my colleagues having irrational computerphobia and i know for sure they will proceed to do these repetitive writings manually resulting in inconsistencies and an inefficient time management. while my wise wife tries to convice me that at least i had fun coding this stuff and having it supporting me with annoying tasks, it still bothers me being the only user, as it means no progression for the company. it riddles me how the colleagues, acknowledging us all being craftspeople in the first place, avoid use of computers whenever possible and rather rely on medieval working flows.
i find it quite amusing to be the 'can you fix my printer'-guy, but i just cannot handle this attitude. and everyone complains about having so much to do. get your shit together and start clicking these few buttons goddammit! -
Guys I need your help.
Recently there has been questions on whether there's a developer oriented dating service which made me think of buiding one.
On research I noticed that people have tried but you always end up with more people from the outside.
So I decided to make my service as developer friendly and user unfriendly as possible.
it's more command based rather than normal click and touch inteefaces.
More like the shortcuts on your ide or the terminal commands.
As part of my research involved talking to other developers and came the desire for more opinions.
here's what I have:
- Github sign in/up only
- Link github stats to account
- Messages (obviously )
- links to your social accounts
- use of devrant avatar
What am looking for is:
+ what do you guys need from a dating service.
+ name you musts, avoid the ones named by others
+ name what you expect to know about the person on the other side before talking to them and before meeting with them.8 -

First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3 -
I love devRant, show new prespective and many related story around me and my job.
For me devRant is like medicine, help me smile and make my good mood sometime.
But, also like medicine I only open the app on spare time or when I need it.
I just curious why so many people so addicted to this, also I see some user maybe like 90% exist and continously comment on every rant that I open.
Maybe our reference/priority is different, I prefer playing game mostly.
Well that what I think, just random spawning before go to sleep mode.12 -

Fuck SAP!
I honestly can’t understand how anyone considers SAP a good ERP software. Either they’re brain-dead, or they actually enjoy the mind-numbing, repetitive work that turns them into the top rat in the race. AAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!
It’s an inconsistent mess—counterintuitive, clunky, and filled with absurd navigation and unnecessarily complicated database links.
And when people praise it like it’s some divine gift to humanity, I can’t help but wonder just how miserable their real lives must be.
There are some list views where you get to something you want, if there is some incomplete data in the list.
There’s a "POSITION" button to help you find what you need—but not everywhere.
Some fields require you to save at a certain step, while others don’t, leaving you to realize halfway through the next step that you forgot to save something.
Want to cancel halfway through? Too bad. You’re stuck unless you TCode your way out—because YOU HAVEN’T FILLED ALL THE FIELDS.
Every option, and its cousin, has a separate TCode.
Even for a simple concept, you need to memorize five different TCodes, create five similar-sounding tables, link them together, and at some point, connect one of them to company data—even if there’s only one company.
Why is it so complicated?! And don’t tell me “it has a lot of modules”—that’s not an excuse. Every menu is complicated on its own.
Instead of designing a logical workflow, they just wing it, throwing in sub-options as they go, then expect the end user to figure out how to link everything together.
Why not take a top-down approach—link all company-related data in one place while still allowing independent options to be linked elsewhere if needed?
I mean, you can’t even use Ctrl+Backspace to delete a word. The UI is that fragile.
And then I remember—it’s German software. That kinda explains it.
Speaking of which, the TCodes—the backbone of the system—are still based on German, even though the entire software is in English.
So the rest of the world is stuck trying to memorize bullshit codes with no logical reference.
FUCK ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THIS SHIT.4 -
CTO: I want you to take up a side project and push it to production. Atleast 1 per quarter. Also, you have to keep making tiny enhancements to the website on weekends. And it would be great if you can mentor and help the other team with architecture. And, don't you feel itchy that the app you made in that hackathon is not used by any user? Productionize it. Don't forget to update me on your primary task at the end of biweekly sprint, that goes without said.

Damn. 3days and not yet finished with this bug.

So this is the story of myself getting from hating vim to find it pretty good.
When i started fiddling around with linux i was literally overrun by vim. I mean how the fuck should i remember all these stupid commands.
So there we go ... nano was my favourite (and only) editor i used.
Everything was fine in my little nano world. I saw some colleague editing every damn thing in vim. I asked him "man what the fuck are you damn crazy"? And thats where till that moment the deepest conversation about an editor in my life began. He told me he could do that much with vim, its almost everywhere nowadays and a must for any admin.
So after letting him tell me about every thing you can do he promised me he is going to help me getting started quicker. And i must say boi vim is really awesome. But for "real" development i still use a ide. Although i find myself programming go, python or bash scripts entirely in vim and its not that bad.
So if you find your way through the deep shit of that single damn command input down there you can get a pretty decent editor.
Dont get me wrong i am forced to use nano sometimes, when i help some of friends with their servers or so and they litterally uninstalled vim because they were to frustrated.
So as i am started to go into the devops area you get more and more towards you have to edit a file on a server, or just tweak around before automating the shit out of it.
And i must say vim has become a solid alternative for me to a full blown ide, or any other text editor.
So yeah i am gone from freaking hating vim to using it almost everyday. But why some people out their treat vim like a religion is not understandable to me in any way.
So whats your story why do you hate/love vim? Or are you just like me a "happy user" that would switch to another editor anytime it would be a better fit?3 -
Okay so anyone experienced working with networking or VOIP applications are welcome to try to help me figure out a few questions I have.
1.) How do VOIP applications like Discord and Skype not have to require you to port forward before use?
2.) If I wanted to do stuff with sockets over the internet the user of the application would have to configure a static IP Address. but when Im using Discord, or a multiplayer game, or literally anything that requires connecting to people I dont have to configure a static IP for those applications but I do for mine?!?
3.) Is there any additional information I should learn about whilst trying to make my networking application (File Transferring application) work? or any links/PDF's I should check out?
These are kinda just things I haven't found answers to, and I didn't know where to ask.14 -
I have a system design question I was hoping u guys could help me with.
So I want to make a display that shows an animated wallpaper. I want to have a camera in the display that will recognize finger gestures and will change the wallpaper accordingly (shuffle to a new one, etc.)
EX: when the current wallpaper is displaying, when the user shows the camera the peace sign, it will switch the current wallpaper to a random wallpaper.
I used tensorflow and the mediapipe hands library to get the finger gesture recognition to work. I used tensorflow, python, and openCV.
Now that the finger gesture recognition is finished, I moved to the animated wallpapers and I made a couple with p5js.
How could I best combine the two? Should I switch from tensorflow in python to tensorflow.js? Or should I find a way to re-do my animated wallpapers in python?
My original plan was having the foundation of the whole system be python. This is so I can have the finger gesture recognition run on the main thread, and have another thread deal with the wallpapers.
Let me know if u guys have any ideas or if I’m not clear. Thanks!!!4 -
I'd probably say the activity that's made me a better dev is going to school for graphic design. Though it would help more if I was a front end developer, it helps me think more about the end user seeing as that's what my schooling focused on. Outside of schooling, probably painting and drawing just due to thinking creatively in my free time I think helps me approach dev problems in different ways than some of my non visual co workers.

Getting a CodinGame puzzle's description without scraping the page.
I spent hours playing with different endpoints and changing values in postman, all to no avail. The most promising endpoint also returned user progress, which requires authentication, which requires a dummy account, which is against their ToS (it is allowed to reverse engineer the API though).
Turns out you just had to submit “null” for your user ID and it would remove the progress field.
Why is this tagged bad design?

For almost anything, you POST json arrays...

So, I’ve been given the task of sorting the security out in an application plugging the holes and whatnot as to be honest it’s shocking haha. It doesn’t help that we automate security audits but that’s a different rant for another day.
We’re using devise for authentication (rails standard, ♥️ devise), we have no password resets through the login page, it has to be manually reset by ringing support, why who knows, even though it’s built into the gem and we allow the user to login using an username instead of an email because for whatever reason someone thought it was a bright idea to not have the email field mandatory.
So I hop onto a call with the BAs, basically I go that we need to implement password resets into the login page so the user can do it themselves and also to cut down support calls a ticket is already in place for it. So I go through the standardised workflow for resetting a password. My manager goes.
“I don’t think this will be very secure”
Wait.. what. Have you never reset a password before? It’s following the same protocol as every other app.
We go back and fourth and I said I’ll get it checked with security just to keep him happy.
The issue mainly is well we can’t implement password resets due to 100s of users not having an email on there account.. 🙃 so before we push this change we need to try and notice all users to set a unique email.
Updated the tickets. All dandy.
Looking at the PRs to see what security things have been done if any and turns out one of the devs in India has just written a migration to add the same default email to every user that doesn’t have an email present and yep it got merged. So I go revert the change but talk about taking a “we don’t care about security approach”.
Eventually we want to have the user reset their passwords and login using their email and someone goes a head and does that. Not to mention the security risk.
Jesus Christ I wonder why I bother sometimes.2 -
I'm a fool.
Trying to delete local version of domain account:
Supposed to use command:
net user [username] /delete
Tried:
net user "domain\user" /delete
Didn't work, came up with help which said an option was net user [/delete] [/domain]
So I decided to try:
net user "user" /delete /domain
... "The request will be processed at a domain controller for domain domain.local.
The command completed successfully."
Well FUCK
So now the user's account has been deleted on AD, trying to restore it but AD management tools aren't picking up AD's object so I can't find the tombstone.
SHIITTTTTTTTT :((
TL;DR: I've fucked a user's account and can't find what I need to fix it.
Moral: Don't be a fool like me.5 -
Ha! Our Ops Support DBA Manager just asked (tongue in cheek) "if we are now supporting MS Access, too?" To which of course, the answer is no. Business user who install Access on their desktop and use it for business, get to provide their own support. As their Dev DBA, I'll be more than happy to help them migrate their data to SQL Server, Oracle, or Teradata, depending on the Use Case for the data. But, no, we don't support Access. Ever.

So, I browse to a video livestream and an annoying ad starts before the livestream is shown. Furthermore, the page jumps around because of a cookie notification that also blocks some UI elements at the top.
Note: this is the website of a public (government-paid) national news website with very high standards and a good reputation.
Action 1: refresh page; I hope the ad is skipped. Nope, annoying ad restarts. Page jumps around again because of the cookie notification.
Action 2: accept cookies to remove notification blocking the top UI (it's OK, I know it can't actually save any cookies on my machine). Instead of some nice JS doing it for me in the background, the page refreshes because you know, HTTP requests and whatnot.
Annoying ad restarts again... FML 🤬
Lessons to be learned from this for any web dev: these annoyances can and *will* exponentially get worse if used simultaneously against your users, instead of being used to help or inform your users.
As a user of you website, I want to watch a livestream. I don't care what stupid legislation forced you to shove a fucking cookie notification in my face. Make sure it is not annoying me to the point that I close you website and take minutes to rant about it!
Also, give me the freedom of choice to watch an ad or not. You and I both know that some ads simply are not for me. Better save yourself and myself the bandwidth.
And go get good at web development. You're a news site. That's more than just text and images. If you want great apps, social media coverage, videos, live streams, blogs, etc. go get some better web devs. Your current web frontend devs only qualify to get fired.1 -
Level of fuckity fuck mood.
After changing dozens of build plans in Bamboo, the build system of poo...
How to verify that nothing has gone wrong?
Poking the database, you'll be surprised that Bamboo stores the buildplan definition as XML.
Another surprise: Some of the keys / values have typos.
Yeah. You read that right. There are typos inside the XML...
Now together with Postgres, we can use XPATH and have some fun.
UNNEST(COALESCE(XPATH('/configuration/buildTasks/taskDefinition[userDescription[contains(text(),"Bleep")]]', build_definition.xml_definition_data::xml)::varchar[], ARRAY['']))
Lovely wrapping via coalesce for some null safety.
Now we get da task definitions for fields having user description text containing bleep.
Wrapping it in two REGEXP_REPLACE to strip out stupid identifiers....
REGEXP_REPLACE(REGEXP_REPLACE(...., '<id>\d+</id>', ''), '<oid>\d+</oid>', ''))
Then wrap that in MD5.
Boom. Lots of MD5 sums to help you identify if the configs are identical for a task or not.
Now wrapping that in another select to group by the MD5 and filter out the non identical ones.
I hate it how sometimes one has to seemingly do a full 2 hour dance for something as stupid as validation.
I'm pretty glad though for XML and XPATH.
Cause otherwise that would have been a whole can of worms I don't wanna think about....2 -
So. Wow I have a question. Ok for real... I am in need of advice. I have a concept for a platform based on a specific interest which almost all of us have, based on a peer-to-peer principle with multiple services and user types/needs/agendas/reasons. The platform is intellectually straight forward and users will all participate on the platform as they see fit which will benefit other users as well as motivate more to join. The platform will serve it's own purpose and meet the users needs in a way that you may have seen before but the intellectual property and how the platform is used, is so unique that I can't risk too much information.
The question is. How do I protect my idea / intellectual property so I can recruit help and market without someone coming along and stealing it out from underneath me?
This isn't uncle Vinnys Cologne idea...
Everyone thinks they have the million dollar winner. I'm not sure if this puts gold toilet paper in my bathroom just yet but... I have something that an existing platform with money will absolutely steal and try to push as their own idea... They will probably succeed too.
So how do I protect this from happening so only I get to fail or ruin this good idea?1 -
At some point I need to do an older project i've had on hold a while, but it'd require writing my own ROM patch system as a major step in completing it, as i'd need to dynamically patch stuff into older games based on system, which current patch formats don't allow for. (This project will also help me learn a few things I need for yet more projects I've got stashed away, so it needs to happen eventually.)
Now, the interesting part: the patch format. I was debating on whether to use binary data, like IPS/BPS and similar formats do, which would be easier to implement... but if I were to have plaintext patches, you'd be able to not only understand what's happening, but also have things like scripting and conditionals and user-defined options and such. This would be WAY harder to implement, slow as fuck, and require an assembler per-target-system, either external or internal... but it'd be transparent, editable, and hella extendable.
This would all happen after I'm both over my burnout AND done chewing through my current stack of projects and such, of course, but still... which sounds better to you, dear reader?2 -
I see a lot of articles/posts about the difficult of CSS.
Finding it hard to maintain, or resulting in spaghetti code.
Is this a common occurrence?
Whilst I've come across it in a few projects before, I wouldn't say it's a regular.
Now a lot of our sites are built on CMS' (Umbraco), but here's my approach.
I'll style the generic elements first across all pages
User generated content is usually in its own CSS class (for nested targeting, e.g. ul/ol tags)
Then I'll give each Document Type (post type/page type) it's own body class and apply specific styling to that page where needed.
Hopefully that's of help to some of you. I'm interested to hear your approaches to it! :)5 -
When did we decide managing Users through Cloud REST architecture was more secure than having them in an underlying DB?
Because I can't put my finger on exactly why... but I don't like it and I think it's probably less secure... and just spawned from the need to be able to make user management a subscription based service like fucking everything? When a simple MySQL or postgres and some bcrypt somewhere would be both more secure and infinitely cheaper?
I'm more used to consuming REST API's than writing them. Can any you REST peeps help me understand how a REST API could be made as secure as a SQL DB connection for user management?
What do you think the attack vectors are for a REST API User Management? Like... what's the SQL injection of REST API? Pack some extra JSON somewhere or something?
At least if I can have faith my shit's not gonna get hacked because I have to use a 3rd party REST service for User Management of Users to my own fucking app I can maybe sleep tonight.2 -

LINUX MASTERS, I can't believe that linux didn't get rid off yet of the annoying user:group system.

I seached around and can't get around how to accomplish this, if it's even possible.

I was thinking, is there a way to have a user login, and behind the scenes it will take to its "website"?

Can you advise? Suggestions?

So I am struggling with a SQL Query for my Database lecture.
This is the Table Layout:
Users(id:integer, reputation:integer, display_name:string,
day:integer, month:integer, year:integer, location:string,
up_votes:integer, down_votes:integer, age:integer)
This is the task:
Show the set of users who have the highest reputation and the lowest down_votes
than any other user. HINT: there is no user that is better than all other users on each of the
criterion individually. Thus, you need a query that can eliminate users that are worse on both
criteria than some other user (in Economics your query will return what is known as the Pareto
Set).
I have looked up the Pareto Set but I am not really sure how to implement it into SQL.
So does any one of you know how to implement this or could anyone lead me into the right direction?
Help is very appreciated :)10 -
Hey Guys!
Hope to find some help here. So i got a MacBook Pro (2015) from my Workplace and upgraded it to High Sierra. I set everything up and it worked fine untill i did some User configurations. I couldnt access the Settings in preferences because my password was wrong (it wasnt really, but it didnt accept it). So i thought reinstalling would help. I did the reinstall process but got an error at the end of it. “Could not create a reboot partition”. I don’t remember the message exactly. So I have tried several things and hope someone can give me a hint.
- reinstall via cmd + r -> failed
- made a time machine backup from my private MacBook (High Sierra) and put it in my work MacBook -> failed
- recovery from internet -> failed
- external drive with High Sierra installer and booting it from there -> failed
Hope you guys have a clue what to do. Thank you :).8 -

I know the function to make it load, what i don't know is how to modify that string to show such behaviors .
The webview is dumb enough to not behave like tht by default. although it feels good having such a raw and tool in hand, but hell, its a fucking google's webview! , why can't they just throw in some built in ways to show their search results by default when user enters a malformed url ?? that would be a great source of branding --__--7 -
Hey DevRant fam :-) hope everyone is doing very well wherever you may be!, i'm currently on my uni break for roughly 3 or so weeks which is fabulous, now i do not have much experience with finance or crypto-currencies!, but i'd like to do something a bit different.
This is something i'd hope to put onto my portfolio, so my idea is something on the lines of a stock market simulator BUT with Crypto currencies, i've been asking people around uni but no help unfortunately!.
So its very similar to a stock market simulator app if you look at things like "Investopedia Stock market simulator" its very much the same concept. The user has x amount of USD or AUD (as an example) and they can buy BTC or Ripple and it either goes up in price or down :-).
So guys that's something id like to create :D i definitely know its difficult and i'm not so sure on how to start :-). If its possible to get some advice on how to start i'd greatly appreciate it!.
Hope you have a wonderful day/night where-ever you are!
(I apologize for rambling on)
Best
Milo :-) -
Dear web developers, please think of the boot disk users.
Users might have to boot their computer from external bootable media such as a live USB stick, SSD, or live CD/DVD, after their operating system caught a problem that prevents it from booting.
Emergency boot media usually has earlier versions of web browsers because they are not frequently used, much less updated. Sadly, the developers of many websites have a habit of breaking compatibility for older web browsers. For example, the new audio player used by the Internet Archive (Archive.org) does not even support Firefox 57, a version that was released as recently as November 2017!
Therefore, websites should retain support for old web browsers. If not all features can be made to work, at least the essential features should work on older browser versions. Websites should not let down people who are stuck due to a computer problem. Those users should still be able to browse the Internet for help, and perhaps enjoy basic entertainment such as watching videos (YouTube, Dailymotion) and listenening to music or audio books (SoundCloud, Internet Archive) while at it.
The attached screenshot shows something no internet user wants to be "greeted" with.
Keep the Internet accessible.

Need help
I recently applied for an internship and had the interview already so far it went great but they did request some code to see my logic in development.
Currently I'm working on a permission based user account system in php so that a single system can be used for both mods and regular users and should be quite easy to implement into a site build from scratch.
What I wonder is if it'll be interesting enough to show to them.
The company develops wesites, apps and educational games.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.3 -
mann... either i am dumb or my team is a bunch of excited monkeys.
for last 6 months my senior and this contract dev (both in Android) have been fussing about adding coroutine flows in our codebase: how our codebase "needs" it and how flows will help our codebase become "better"
when i asked them why, they gave me even more shit about hot flows cold flows, state flows, and how ots the latest "solution" from google.
So today, while going through another existential crises in my free time, i decided to understand what these "flows" are.
and from what i understand, it is mainly for cases in which there os actively changing data and we want to get latest updates without any event or trigger, like those streaming datas , chat messages, location etc.
but we are a freaking insurance app! user presses a button and we make an api call! what is the fucking problem here that isn't being solved by good old livedata and coroutines? There isn't any "live" api in app as far as i know and even if there is the code should be modified for 1 such api.
why fuck the whole codebase for a usecase that isn't applicable for 99% of APIs?
also, if a flow is going to auto trigger and call api, how are we supposed to control it? like say there is a offers api(there isn't) which gives us the latest offer products to show user for 5 seconds then refresh. for this i will simply returrn
flow{
while(true){
emit (offer api results)
delay(5000)
}
}
but this is an infinite polling api! how to stop it when say user pressed a cross button or did some other interaction?
it seems useless as fuck.. i can achieve a more controllable polling using the same while loop in different location or some other solution that won't require me adding this wierd api2 -
Fellow devranters, I need your help for a... NodeJS question... (and I won't bother asking the question on SO, because all the questions/answers I found won't work)
You see, this client we have says they want their app to be login-less; once the app starts, ir automatically knows who is the ldap user that 'logged' in the app.
I've been struggling with it for weeks, trying to use npm modules, retrieving info from process.env, and I'm sure it is completely impossible without at least providing a username.
So here I am, asking anyone out here who can answer me this question: is it possible to login without providing anything?7 -

For individuals and businesses alike, falling victim to a cyberattack or financial scam can be devastating. Fortunately, firms like GearHead Engineers, known for their advanced cybersecurity services, are stepping in to help investors recover losses and, more importantly, prevent future breaches.
The Rise of Cyber-Investment Threats
As digital platforms have become the norm for managing investments, they’ve also become a prime target for hackers. Common threats include:
* Phishing scams that trick users into revealing login credentials.
* Ransomware attacks on financial firms.
* Malware that siphons personal and financial data.
* DeFi and cryptocurrency hacks exploiting insecure smart contracts or user wallets.
The financial implications can be enormous, especially when assets are stolen, trading accounts are compromised, or confidential investment strategies are exposed.

Clients who’ve suffered financial loss due to cyber incidents often find that working with cybersecurity experts like GearHead Engineers is a turning point. Not only can the firm help assess whether any funds are recoverable (especially in crypto and digital asset cases), but it also strengthens the client's defense moving forward.
By implementing robust firewalls, multi-factor authentication, encryption, and behavioral analytics, GearHead Engineers empowers investors to take control of their digital financial security.
Conclusion: Proactive Security is Smart Investment Strategy
Recovering from a cyberattack is never easy, but it’s possible—especially with the right partners. One of the reasons why I wanted to become a software developer is because I see so many products or services taking the easy way out, at the cost of killing customer expectations. For example, I was told about JobTrack.io, which is supposed to help manage job searching by keeping track of applications and their statuses. But almost as quickly as I was told, my mind goes into automatic promise defense mode. And rightfully so, because the service turned out to be almost as monotaneous as the job search itself! Not as seamless as I'd need it to be to get started right away.
Now, maybe there's a slight chance I don't know wtf I'm talking about here. But, what's stopping this product from using an email client that runs server side, to interface with the user's main inbox, to run sentiment analysis on emails for detecting job application submissions? Such functionality would obviously need permission from the end user, so there are no surprises that some 3rd party app is sorta kinda monitoring your emails. And of course measures should be taken to avoid detecting anything beyond the contextual lines of: "Thank you for applying to so and so", or "We've recieved your application! Next steps".
Present those detections to the user to confirm. And do the same thing for rejections and offers. Shouldn't be that hard especially when most sites these days allow you to sign in with Google, and that Google marks these particular emails as "Important"; which further filters the detection process, and partially does JobTrack's job for them.
Honestly, I think the app has promise, and hope this is just a case of starting off small. -
I wonder if there is any technical issues that prohibit the creation of open source websites.
By "web sites" I do not consider CMS like Drupal or word press, but rather entire end web site sources.
In fact anything (frontend, backend) except database content that contain user data and credentials.
Not for reusability purposes like CMSs, but simply for transparency and community development purposes, like almost any open source end application.
I agree that a web server is much more exposed than a classic desktop app, as it has lots of targetable private data and internet public access. But for some non-critical purpose this seems to be affordable in exchange of better code review, allowing a community to help improve a tool it uses, and better (not perfect though) transparency (which is an increasingly relevant question nowadays, mainly towards personal data usage).6 -
Did someone already thought about how color highlight can be better? It's been 4-5 years now that I'm coding on a virtual console that run on iPad with a monochrome code editor. Despite the fact that's remind me the old days when I was 8 years old, that doesn't stop me for coding with it.
I mean, is it really important to know that strings are red and numbers are yellow? How does that help me? They are both literal and behave to the user-content categories.
I was talking with my friend, and he says he likes to know if something is a keyword or an identifier. In C++, a lot of common keywords to define stuff and control the flow are often the first word and easy to spot.
A couple of months ago, I tried Flutter, and the editor can highlight ident blocks and give them different colors, but with Flutter, it's easy to get 10 or more ident levels, Does the color help? Splitting the code does.
I think, there is so much stuff that is more important than coloring the grammar of a language. For instance: knowing if an identifier belongs to which Rust Crate because, It's easy to stack 10 or more dependencies in one file that as better chances of names collisions.
Knowing if an identifier was recognized, if it used, if it's a local, a member, a global, a compiled value or a macro seems more important.
I would like to color block of code that is important or sensible. That will help my coworker about the severity of a particular place in the code.
What do you think?1 -
Need some help,
I am setting up postfix and I need it to accept all emails, from any domain (without a domain list), and forward it to a local address on the machine (It pipes into PHP, toscript@).
I have a catch-all working where it is forwarding the emails to the toscript@ mailbox dispite of the to address. But if I send an email to it that is not in the domain list it gets rejected as it's not in the domain list, Is their a known way to force Postfix to accept all domain emails without having a list of the domains in the server.
I have searched but no luck of a working solution, I have looked at the following with no working solution

Looking at the docs I do not see anything for it but making it an open relay but I can't figure what settings to update to make it the open relay to capture all of the mail.
I know I am missing something but I can't figure out what it is!
::Rant::
I'd like to use Postfix as it seems very stable and it's not a hack job as some of the projects that I have seen. It also can communicate with all of the proper channels for SMTP and the Protocol as well as some very easy configs.2 -
Visualize the entire complexity of the content within the project so that you know what data users will need to access, and compartmentalize those in to separate modules that you can build on over time. Think about any limitations with accessing that data (does the user have that role, what if the data is accessed simulateously, how to handle the same user accessing from different devices etc).
Think about the devices being used - is it going to be a website, an app, both? How best then to access the data? Direct access to a database, or an API system?
Then think about the front-end design and how to simplify the view right down as much as you can. Again, break it down in to modules.
Then decide on the technology you want to use, and what libraries would help simplify things.
These days I like to use JSON API's to access DB content because app and web technologies change quite often but the API will be accessible to whatever I use to build it.
For websites I love using Laravel, which simplifies the back-end tasks, and mdbootstrap which simplifies the front-end tasks and looks "appy". -
Need ya help
i can't figure it out. i am working on a q&a webpage and i want to make an upvote/downvote system.
How or what should i use to save when a user upvotes a question on a database without needing to refresh the page.
I have no ideea ><
PS: as backend i use php and mysql for the database3 -

OK, so, I see PY files shared on GitHub. All I know is, it is code for certain apps or pages. I download SEVERAL DIFFERENT PROGRAMS trying to get PY to open. Some didn't work, others were in Console and not Form. I asked for help on the Forum, how to open it, they do the same BS; gave me a Console app that just stays black for less than a second, and closes. I ask for a Form version. They made the excuse that it wasn't a program like I was thinking. They rudely tell me to be polite, but something like this IS GOING TO HAPPEN if they can't get their crap working. Eventually, after I TOLD THEM I WAS FURIOUS, THEY HIDE MY QUESTION FOR 10 MINUTES. When I replied, I DID NOT CUSS, I REPLACED LETTERS WITH ASTERISKS AND SYMBOLS, AND STILL GOT SUSPENDED, FOR A MONTH, AFTER TELLING THEM I WAS FURIOUS.
On the other hand, I was using Audacity. I upgraded and a plugin stops working. I thought they messed something up, so I wait using the outdated version for the fix for a few months, and so a few months later I update again, at this point I was a little upset; 2nd update and it still doesn't work. After the 3rd time, I thought they just didn't want to take the time and fix it, as people probably would have reported it by then. So I rant on Audacity's Forum saying they didn't fix an error, showed them screenshots in all versions I got and the 3 newest ones show an error. THEY TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG! I was trying to run a 32-Bit plugin on a 64-Bit version! I downloaded a 32-Bit version of the newest Audacity, and the plugin worked fine.
Python could've done what Audacity did, but, "No-o-o, we enjoy banning Winston when he is peed off!" And just so, the Suspension ends a day after my Birthday.
I might just ask when I'm back on, "How to remove my user off this Forum", so they can say "I can't", and flag it as malware because I almost no longer want they're help, and CAN'T GET AWAY FROM IT.
Freak you in the butt, Python.
PS - If anyone knows how to use Python files in Windows 10 or know a free, non-demo program that will more-advancedly edit, save, open PY files in a Form, please, give me the name or link to the software, program or app in the comments.
Before anyone says anything, this page says "Rant", so don't ban this or I'm deleting my account. If this isn't a "Rant" site, please tell me, and/or rename this site.
That is the reason I came here, just to get my frustration out.17 -
My question is very easy and it is possible that this is a stupid question but I need your help. I have tried to develop a component with a function where I implemented a require function. In this last function, I included a state where a "select" option send the value (the path of the css file) to update this state. The value depend the choice of the user. So, it partially works because when I come back to an option that I picked a few seconds ago, the require function doesn't work anymore. I am not sure that was the best option. I am a beginner. Can someone explain me the reason why "require()" stops to work and which is the best way to resolve this functionality please ?

So I had an app idea a while back, but didn't do anything with because I couldn't tell if it was stupid or not. Maybe you all can help me with that.
My family was taking a trip to Washington D.C. I hadn't been there before, and wanted to know what it looked like, but when I searched for images of DC, all I got was images of the monuments there, and not the actual city.
So the app allows people to search and find realistic images of places (ie, Washington DC) that shows what that place really looks like, not just what it's famous for. And, now this isn't some major feature I just thought this would be convenient and cool for the user, a pop-up message of some sort that asks if they're planning a trip there, and takes them to a travel guide site, or a hotel room booking site, etc.
So what do you guys think? Yes? No? Maybe?
Also, I didn't list this as a collab because I don't know anything about actually developing an app (I mean, I'd love to learn I just don't have the time), just a bunch of high school level CS stuff.1 -

Windows or Linux?
What distribution? I have my knowledge in Debian. Or could I go with RemixOS because it's most user-friendly and best for work abroad? But is there an IDE for Android based distributions?
You see what my dilemma is don't you? ^^
May some of you could help me

Do reports actually make people dumber?
I write a lot of reports that output for our customers into excel. I'm starting to suspect that for many customers it doesn't actually help them, rather it might actually hurt them (also eat all my time).
If a user generates their own report via search options or etc to pull out some data, they usually SEEM to have put some thought into the actions required to find the data they want.
Accordingly:
1. They immediately know what information is there, and why some information might be excluded.
2. They can do a little trial and error to solve their own problems / better understand what is going on.
3. They're a hell of a lot less likely to insist that something is "MISSING!!!" without seeming to actually know what the thing(s) are that are missing.
With auto generated spreadsheet that shows up in the email there's just little no critical thinking outside of some stray thoughts in their head when the spreadsheet showed up ...2 -

Okay, I hope a few people can help me with this; what are the benefits/reasons to use MS technologies? I'm talking about .NET, ASP, Windows Server, Powershell...
I've never understood it. I love Nodejs because you don't have any packages unless you ask for them. Alpine Linux is amazing! It runs on 8MB of RAM from fresh and doesn't need much more space to install.
You want .NET core? 140MB download. You're configuring database connection strings? Feel free to type in whatever you like, it'll parse and replace with some magic variables that have come from some other random file.
I was using Powershell recently, needed to set an env variable. Bash is happy with "export name=value". You want to do that in Powershell? I just googled it and found an entire 40-minute read discussing how to set env vars. Why?! It should be one command, and I don't know who thought that "Get-ChildItem" was _obviously_ referring to env variables.
It seems to me that everywhere MS has got their hands on development-wise, it inherits the typical sales bullshit. No no, you can't call them "websockets", they have to be branded "SignalR" and add tons of overhead. You can't say "disable notifications" it has to be "focus assist". I'm really surprised something as simple as a keyboard hasn't become a "varied user input device" or something of the like.
Am I alone in thinking this?4 -
which is the best cloud provider for a complete beginner (user/dev) in terms of community support, employer preference and user-friendliness?
i know that understanding the tech and concepts behind it matters more than getting familiarized with a specific platform, but i'm looking to build a more diverse profile and have noticed many positions asking for AWS/Azure experience.
since i'll be starting from scratch, any provider with easy-to-follow documentation, online help and certifications that don't leave you broke (would have to pay myself, earn very less as a student from a third-world country, parents/current employer can't support) would work.8 -

Home Loan Calculator: Simplify Your Mortgage Process with Calculating a Mortgage Loan
When you’re ready to purchase a home, one of the most important financial decisions you’ll make is how to finance it. A home loan calculator is an invaluable tool in this process, helping you understand exactly what your monthly payments will look like and ensuring that you are financially prepared for your new home. At Calculating a Mortgage Loan, we provide comprehensive, user-friendly home loan calculators that make it easier for you to make informed decisions about your mortgage.
Why Use a Home Loan Calculator?
A home loan calculator allows you to quickly and accurately determine the cost of your mortgage. It’s an essential tool for anyone looking to buy a home, refinance, or even adjust their current loan terms. By calculating your mortgage payments in advance, you’ll be better prepared to make a sound financial decision. Here’s why it’s essential to use a home loan calculator:
Understand Your Monthly Payment:
A home loan calculator helps you determine what your monthly mortgage payments will be based on the loan amount, interest rate, and loan term. This gives you a clear picture of how much you’ll need to budget each month to stay on track with your payments.
Assess Affordability:
With the home loan calculator, you can easily adjust loan amounts, interest rates, and loan terms to see how these factors affect your monthly payment. This allows you to find a loan structure that fits your budget and financial situation.
Plan for the Long Term:
It’s not just about your current monthly payment. A home loan calculator also shows you the total cost of the loan over its lifetime, including the principal and interest. This can help you compare different loan terms and decide whether a shorter or longer-term loan is right for you.
Make Informed Decisions:
By using a home loan calculator, you can see exactly how different interest rates and down payment amounts affect your loan. This helps you make smart decisions about choosing a lender, negotiating terms, and determining how much you should put down on your new home.
Save Time and Stress:
Having access to a home loan calculator saves you the hassle of manual calculations or relying on estimates. The tool provides quick, accurate results that allow you to move forward with confidence.
How to Use a Home Loan Calculator
Using a home loan calculator is simple and straightforward. Here’s how you can calculate your monthly mortgage payment:
Enter Loan Amount:
This is the total amount you plan to borrow for your home. It’s usually the purchase price of the home minus your down payment.
Interest Rate:
Input the interest rate for your loan. This rate can vary depending on the type of loan and your creditworthiness.
Loan Term:
Choose the length of your loan, typically 15, 20, or 30 years. The longer the loan term, the lower your monthly payment will be, but you’ll pay more in interest over the life of the loan.
Down Payment:
The more money you put down upfront, the smaller the loan amount will be, reducing your monthly payment. Most homebuyers make a down payment of 20%, but it can vary.
Additional Costs:
Be sure to account for other costs, such as property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and private mortgage insurance (PMI). These costs are often rolled into your monthly mortgage payment.
Once you input these details, the calculator will give you an estimate of your monthly payment, helping you plan and budget accordingly.

hey, so i have recently started learning about node js and express based backend development.
can you suggest some good github repositories that showcase real life backend systems which i can use as inspiration to learn about the tech?
like for eg, i want to create a general case solution for authentication and profile management : a piece of db+api end points + models to :
- authenticate user : login/signup , session expire, o auth 2 based login/signup, multi account login, role based access, forgot password , reset password, otp login , etc
- authorise user : jwt token authentication, ip whitelisting, ssl pinning , cors, certificate based authentication , etc (
- manage user : update user profile, delete user, map services , subscriptions and transactions to user , dynamic meta properties ( which can be added/removed for a single user and not exactly part of main user profile) , etc
followed by deployment and the assoc concepts involved : deployment, clusters, load balancers, sharding ,... etc
----
these are all the buzzwords that i have heard that goes into consideration when designing a secure authentication system for a particular large scale website like linkedin or youtube. am not even sure how many of these concepts would require actual codelines and how many would require something else.
so wanted inspiration from open source content to learn about it in depth, replicate and create new better stuff if possible .
apart from that, other backend architectures like video/images storage system, or just some server for movie, social media, blog website etc would also help.2 -

EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR RETRIEVING MISPLACED FUNDS AND RESTORQING YOUR FINANCIAL SECURITY
The story of Trust Geeks Hack Expert, which helped me recoup a staggering $63,000 worth of Bitcoin, serves as a powerful cautionary tale for anyone who has suffered the heartbreak of lost digital assets. While the initial promise of a miraculous recovery may have seemed like a lifeline, the reality is far more complex and nuanced. This experience underscores several key lessons for navigating the volatile and unpredictable world of cryptocurrency. First, it highlights the critical importance of robust security measures. Cryptocurrencies, by their very decentralized nature, offer both opportunities and risks. Unlike traditional financial systems, there is no central authority overseeing transactions, leaving users vulnerable to hacks, scams, and errors. The security of digital assets rests entirely in the hands of the user. Therefore, it is essential to implement strong security practices, such as using hardware wallets, enabling two-factor authentication, and creating complex passwords. Regularly updating security settings and verifying the authenticity of platforms before engaging with them can help safeguard assets from potential threats. My experience with Trust Geeks Hack Expert also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of placing blind trust in unverified sources. this experience underscores the harsh realities of navigating the cryptocurrency ecosystem. While the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies offers unparalleled freedom, it also places the burden of responsibility directly on the individual. Without the protection of a centralized system, users are at greater risk of losing their investments due to human error, malicious attacks, or fraud. The promise of easy profits often comes with significant risks, and it’s crucial to approach the crypto world with caution. Trust Geeks Hack Expert episode, which helped me reclaim my lost assets, highlights the need for comprehensive security practices, caution when dealing with unverified sources, and an awareness of the risks inherent in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As digital assets continue to grow in prominence, these lessons will be essential for anyone looking to safely navigate the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency. Reach out to Trust Geeks Hack Expert for their exceptional recovery service.

It's been over 7 months of being deployed to help finish a project that's crossed the deadline umpteenth times. There's only this guy who had started on this project and me as developers. He's a nice guy, but I'm finding him to be a snowflake that's extremely difficult to work with. Every time I mention a critical problem with his original design, or the approaches he takes on this project, he takes it personally. He would pour out a long spiel of why this and why that, and waste most of the meeting time. Or he would run to his outdated diagrams or documents that he had created himself somewhere deep in the wiki forest, and use that as a defense. He creates his own user stories and tasks on a whim with no PM supervision. I've noted to the managers that this is a project to fail, and all they've done is assign a busy PM to this project, and the new PM is perfectly fine w/ the way the project has been handled so far.
I point out a small flaw with his assumptions just the other day, and he even managed to hyperventilate and again fall back to his outdated document... WTF? I'd rather start from scratch and get this project finished faster.. and even though I've expressed my objection to continue on this path, the managers foolishly believe that this project will be completed somehow. I don't hate my development partner, or PM, or people in the management, but I hate the fact that I don't have control over so many aspects of this project, including the half-assed, unnecessarily complex design, and the dev workflow itself. I feel like I'm tied to a car that's being thrown over the cliff, and assigned to fix the junky car w/ its engine broken before the car hits the ground. Something like this would never be allowed to go in a commercial sector. I just wish that the management could just give me control over project as THE lead & PM over this project, and get this project tied up for good, and with better reusability and quality.1 -

When I first got involved in crypto, I was excited by the potential for growth, but I never imagined it would end in such a nightmare. I had found what seemed like a trustworthy investment opportunity, one that promised incredible returns with little risk. After weeks of careful research, I took the leap and sent a large sum of money to the platform. Everything appeared legitimate a professional website , user testimonials, and even responsive customer support. But then, overnight, the platform vanished without a trace. The website was gone, and my emails went unanswered. I was left in shock, staring at an empty screen, wondering how I could have been so naive. I felt foolish, embarrassed, and completely powerless. I couldn’t believe I’d fallen for such a blatant scam. For weeks, I tried everything contacting the platform, reporting the scam to authorities, and even reaching out to other so-called recovery services. But each attempt only deepened my frustration. I was met with either silence or more false promises. My hopes were dashed, and I began to believe I’d lost everything. The financial and emotional toll was overwhelming, and I was ready to give up, convinced there was no way back. Just when I was about to lose all hope, I came across a recovery team called FUNDS RECLIAMER COMPANY. Unlike the others, they didn’t make lofty claims or promise instant results. They offered a more thoughtful, strategic approach—one that was based on careful investigation and tailored solutions. They understood exactly what I was going through, and their empathy was genuine. What really set FUNDS RECLIAMER COMPANY apart was their transparency and honesty. They didn’t overpromise or make me any false assurances.

HIRE A HACKER CRYPTO SCAM RECOVERY DUNAMIS CYBER SOLUTION
In early October 2024, I found myself in an unfortunate situation that many cryptocurrency investors, especially newcomers, can relate to. I had been convinced by someone I connected with on Telegram to invest in an Altcoin cryptocurrency platform that promised high returns. At the time, everything seemed legitimate—the platform looked professional, the user interface was sleek, and the individual I spoke to appeared trustworthy. I made my investment, confident that this would be a great opportunity .However, as soon as I tried to withdraw my funds, I was faced with a shocking reality: I couldn’t access my account, and the platform seemed to be non-functional. After multiple attempts to contact support, I began to realize I had fallen victim to a scam. The platform was fake, and my funds were likely lost forever. It was a devastating feeling—especially knowing how much I had trusted the process .Fortunately, I didn’t give up hope. While researching how to deal with the situation, I came across a review that talked about funds recovery services. The review mentioned DUNAMIS CYBER SOLUTION a company that specializes in helping people like me recover their lost cryptocurrency. Skeptical at first, I decided to contact them to see if they could help with my situation. From the first interaction, I felt more at ease. DUNAMIS CYBER SOLUTION team was professional, knowledgeable, and empathetic. They assured me that many people had fallen into similar traps and that recovery was possible with the right approach. Over the next few weeks, their team worked diligently to track down my funds, communicate with the platform’s support, and initiate the necessary recovery processes .To my amazement, DUNAMIS CYBER SOLUTION was able to successfully recover my money.

In the unpredictable world of cryptocurrency, the allure of high returns can easily lead to poor decisions. I learned this lesson painfully after falling victim to a fraudulent USDT trading platform, resulting in a devastating loss of $300,000. The platform seemed legitimate. Its attractive user interface and enticing marketing claims promised effortless profits. I believed I had done my due diligence, and the glowing testimonials from other users only reinforced my confidence. Eager to invest, I deposited a significant sum, convinced I was making a smart financial move. However, red flags soon appeared. Withdrawal requests went unanswered, and the customer support I once relied on became increasingly unresponsive. I quickly realized that I had been ensnared in a well-orchestrated scam, leaving me unable to access my funds. Panic set in as I understood the magnitude of my situation.Determined to recover my lost assets, I scoured the internet for solutions. During my search, I discovered recovery services like Digital Web Recovery. Although I was skeptical, my desperation prompted me to reach out for help. The team responded with empathy and expertise, outlining how they could assist in recovering my stolen funds. They explained the process of analyzing transactions and the strategies they would use to navigate the complexities of crypto fraud. In the weeks that followed, I gathered the necessary documentation and collaborated closely with the recovery team. Their dedication and knowledge were evident as they tackled the intricate legal and technical challenges involved in my case. With each update, my sense of hope grew.Eventually, I was thrilled to learn that a significant portion of my funds had been recovered. This experience was not just about regaining my money; it served as a crucial lesson in the importance of vigilance and thorough research in the crypto landscape. I share my story to caution others about the dangers lurking in cryptocurrency investments and to stress the importance of seeking professional assistance if you find yourself in a similar situation. If you or someone you know needs help recovering lost cryptocurrency, I highly recommend contacting experts like Digital Web Recovery. Their support was instrumental in guiding me through this challenging experience, and I am grateful for their help during a dark time. oh dear the stocktaking i did (maybe am still doing? don't know whether it's done yet🤷) with my dad for his little shop😩
his pc/office skills had begun with microsoft excel (he taught me how to use a pc all together) ... and have stopped there. Excel for almost everything. To be fair, he uses PCs like a normal user and isn't of that metier, ok fine🤷.
but when i saw the table he uses, which he copied over the years from the previous versions (still ok), i quickly found out that his table entries were written by him FOR HIM. it was very hard for me to help him (he tells me the article he sees in his storage, i have to include, so i look it up in the table and do stuff) as he had nicknames for his articles that only he associated with😐.
next he prints out a list a company has given to him where he buys some products from, which is ordered by id number ... my dad works with the correspnding names instead so of course all product names are random😑, so every time i need a price for an article he has to scan every list item. you've guessed it, n² search😪😒.
i tell him multiple times to call the company and send him a list in alphabetical order but he refuses as "we've almost finished" ... 🙄 (i'm not allowed to ask for him, as the company will only talk with the responsible one😑)
so I'm tied to a pc, talking to my dad over phone, who has to walk around and has to help me very often to find the article he's meaning to, at the end, do a n² search to add all the prices....😩
I absolutely want to help him automate things for sanity's sake🤔😅
install databases, connect via internet, connect to companies databases for up-to-date prices etc., make some desktop/web app/i don't know for fast access and boom...
and i don't even know where to start and where to find the time for it and whether it's even all possible😅🤔😐🤷 -
Navigating Product Development: PoC vs. Prototype vs. MVP
We understand the challenges that startups face because we’ve been working alongside entrepreneurs for over 12 years, helping them bring their business ideas to life. One key factor in ensuring success is understanding the differences between PoC (Proof of Concept), Prototype, and MVP (Minimum Viable Product), and how to use them effectively in your product development journey.
Choosing the right approach can help you save time, money, and effort while making sure your idea is on the right path. In this article, we’ll break down PoC, Prototype, and MVP to explore their unique roles, benefits, and outcomes. By understanding each, you’ll be better equipped to decide which one suits your startup’s needs.
PoC, Prototype, & MVP: The Basics
Before we get into the details, let’s first define what PoC, Prototype, and MVP mean so we’re all on the same page:
Proof of Concept (PoC): This is a model or demo built to verify that a particular idea or concept is feasible. A PoC tests whether the core functionality of an idea can be achieved in real-world conditions.
Prototype: A working model of a product that demonstrates how it will function and look. Prototypes often include limited features and are used to gather feedback on design and user interaction.
Minimum Viable Product (MVP): This is a simplified version of the product, featuring only the essential functions. The goal is to launch quickly, gather user feedback, and iterate based on real-world usage.
Now, let’s compare PoC, Prototype, and MVP in more detail.
PoC vs. Prototype vs. MVP: A Quick Comparison
Understanding the differences between PoC, Prototype, and MVP is essential to navigating the product development process. These stages help you minimize risk, save time and money, and ultimately deliver a successful product. Whether you’re at the feasibility stage with a PoC or preparing to launch with an MVP, the right approach can make all the difference.3 -

Top Benefits of Using Data Loss Prevention in Microsoft 365
Data Loss Prevention (DLP) in Microsoft 365 offers numerous benefits to organizations aiming to protect sensitive information and ensure compliance. One of the top advantages is enhanced data protection, where DLP policies help identify, monitor, and restrict the sharing of sensitive information like credit card details or personal identification numbers across Microsoft 365 apps (Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams). This proactive security measure prevents unauthorized access or accidental sharing of confidential data.
Another key benefit is regulatory compliance. DLP helps organizations comply with data protection regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA by enforcing policies that limit data exposure and unauthorized sharing, reducing the risk of costly fines.
Microsoft 365 DLP also offers visibility and control. IT administrators can monitor user actions and identify potential risks in real time, making it easier to enforce security measures. Additionally, user education is integrated through policy tips, which educate users about data protection during daily tasks.
Finally, DLP offers seamless integration across all Microsoft 365 platforms, making it easy to manage and enforce consistent security policies across emails, documents, and collaborative tools, ensuring comprehensive protection for the entire organization. -
What is the Impact of Medical Billing Solutions on Healthcare Efficiency?
In the complex world of healthcare, where precision and efficiency are paramount, medical billing solutions play a crucial role in streamlining the revenue cycle management process. Healthcare providers are constantly seeking ways to improve their billing procedures to enhance financial performance and ensure the delivery of high-quality care.
What are Medical Billing Solutions?
Medical billing solutions are comprehensive systems and software designed to manage the entire medical billing process. Healthcare billing systems facilitate accurate coding, claims submission, and payment collection, ensuring healthcare providers receive timely reimbursements for their services.
How Important Is Efficiency in Healthcare Billing Solutions?
Healthcare billing solutions are the backbone of efficient revenue cycle management. They simplify the billing process, reducing errors and improving the speed at which claims are processed. By streamlining this essential aspect of healthcare operations, medical billing solutions allow healthcare providers to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks.
What Role Does Medical Billing Software Play?
Medical billing software is at the heart of these solutions. It provides a centralized platform for managing patient billing, coding, and claims submission. With its user-friendly interface and automation features, medical billing significantly reduces the time and effort required to complete billing tasks accurately.
Why Choose Medical Billing Solutions?
Accuracy: Healthcare billing software enhances accuracy by automating the coding process and reducing human errors. This ensures that claims are submitted correctly the first time, reducing the risk of denials.
Efficiency: By automating time-consuming tasks, medical billing solutions improve the efficiency of the billing process. This means faster reimbursements and more time for patient care.
Compliance: Medical billing solutions help healthcare organizations stay compliant with ever-changing regulations and coding requirements, reducing the risk of legal issues and financial penalties.
Financial Performance: Timely and accurate billing leads to better financial performance, as it ensures that healthcare providers receive the payments they deserve promptly.
Patient Billing Software: Many medical billing solutions include patient billing software, allowing patients to view and pay their bills online, improving patient satisfaction.

Medical billing solutions typically encompass a range of components and features, such as:
Medical Billing Systems: Medical billing management systems serve as the foundation, providing a secure platform for managing billing data, codes, and claims.
Healthcare Billing Software: This software offers a user-friendly interface for coding and billing tasks, making it easier for billing staff to do their jobs effectively.
Healthcare Billing Systems: Medical billing system software integrates seamlessly with electronic health records (EHR) and practice management software, creating a comprehensive solution for healthcare billing.
How to choose the right Medical Billing Solution?
When selecting a medical billing solution for your healthcare organization, consider the following factors:
Integration: Ensure that the system integrates well with your existing medical billing systems and EHR.
Scalability: Look for a solution that can grow with your organization's needs.
User-Friendly Interface: A user-friendly interface is essential for quick staff training and efficient billing processes.
Reporting and Analytics: Billing systems in healthcare offer robust reporting capabilities and can provide insights into your organization's financial performance.
Support and Training: Choose a provider that offers training and ongoing support to maximize your solution's benefits.
Conclusion:
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, efficiency, accuracy, and compliance are non-negotiable. Billing systems for healthcare are the cornerstone of achieving these goals.
As the demand for streamlined revenue cycle management grows, the importance of choosing the right medical billing software becomes increasingly evident. A well-implemented solution can be the catalyst for increased efficiency and financial success in the challenging realm of healthcare billing. -

Looking for help starting with DevOps.
Does anyone know of a site or forum where you can talk about general coding/scripting patterns rather than just asking specific questions?
Bear with me, this may be a bit longer than most posts here.
I'm a self-taught admin/tech working with one colleague (who's also mostly self taught) at a high school, managing both clients and servers.
We've been doing most things manually bit I'm looking into converting as much work as possible into more of a DevOps setup, with Powershell-scripts for multi step tasks.
I want to do this for a number of reasons. Having a script doing a number of steps would cut down on time spent on individual tasks and minimize the risk that a step is missed or, perhaps even worse, mistyped. Also it's important that I actually learn what I'm doing, why something works and why something fails.
As and example, I have a powershell-script which moves a student from one year to another (basically they have user names with a two-digit prefix based on the year they started and a suffix with two letters from their first names and four from their last names) if they need to repeat a grade.
It basically renames the account in the AD with the correct year-prefix, changes the samAccountName, renames Home and Profile-directories on disk and changes paths on the profile-tab in AD, moves the user into a new OU and security group etc.
It works as intended if the user account to be renamed exists and there's no name conflict with the new name. But I'd like for the script to validate that there's no problem with user names, source and target security groups and OUs etc. and eventually split the script up into smaller clearly defined functions for better readability.
However, I don't want someone to just write the script for me, I'd prefer to be able to discuss script flow and come to my own conclusions and solutions.1 -
Been trying to use the Qt Installer Framework to build an installer. Seemed very appealing, cross-platform support, etc.
It is very easy to do the standard setup...anything beyond that you better be prepared to waist alot of time and get get half working implementations.
Want install over a previous version? Nope!
Want good documentation? Sorry.
User supported community to at least offer some help? Non existent. -

In the ever-changing world of cryptocurrency trading, the temptation of quick profits can easily lead individuals into the clutches of scams. It all began when I received a message on Telegram from an unknown user who claimed to be a broker. He presented himself as an expert, eager to help me invest my savings in cryptocurrencies and stocks that he assured me were highly profitable. I followed his guidance and set up an account on a platform he recommended. I transferred a significant amount of money to a crypto exchange called Crypto TX, initially investing $37,000 in USDT, followed by another $13,000, bringing my total investment to $50,000. The broker informed me that my trading would be activated and that I could expect returns within two weeks. To test the waters, I withdrew a portion of my investment after the trading period ended, and to my relief, the withdrawal was successful. This success led me to refer several family members back in India, all of whom also invested substantial amounts, believing they were making a sound financial decision. However, the situation quickly turned dire. After our collective investments reached nearly half a million dollars, we found ourselves unable to withdraw any further funds. The once-promising trading platform revealed itself to be a sophisticated scam, leaving us devastated and financially crippled. It was during this dark time that one of my distant cousins suggested we seek help from Cyber Constable Intelligence, a company specializing in fund recovery from scams. This idea, though unconventional, sparked a glimmer of hope. We reached out to Cyber Constable Intelligence, and their team was incredibly responsive and professional. They guided us through the recovery process with expertise and determination. To our astonishment, within a week, we began to see results. Cyber Constable Intelligence worked diligently to trace our funds and communicate with the necessary parties involved. Their commitment and skill were instrumental in bringing us back to financial stability. Thanks to Cyber Constable Intelligence, we were able to recover our investments, a feat that seemed impossible just days before. This experience taught me the critical importance of being cautious and informed in the world of online investments. While the allure of quick profits can be tempting, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek help from trusted sources like Cyber Constable Intelligence to avoid falling victim to scams.2 -

RECOVER LOST BITCOIN & ETHEREUM WITH THE HELP OF SALVAGE ASSET RECOVERY
Greetings to friends and family,
I am Dr. Richard, writing to you from Canada to share an important and personal story that I believe could help others avoid the same mistakes I made. In 2024, I decided to try my hand at binary trading, drawn in by the promises of high returns and seemingly legitimate platforms. Unfortunately, what I thought was a golden opportunity quickly turned into a costly and painful experience. I was introduced to what appeared to be a professional binary trading platform, complete with glossy promises of quick profits and user-friendly tools. Eager to capitalize on the potential for fast gains, I invested a significant amount of money. At first, things seemed promising small gains here and there. But soon after, things took a turn for the worse. The platform I had trusted began to show signs of irregularities. My attempts to withdraw funds were blocked, and communication with the platform's support team became increasingly difficult. In the end, I realized I had been scammed, and all my invested funds had vanished without a trace. For a while, I felt hopeless. I had no idea how to retrieve my lost money or who to turn to. But fortunately, I was referred to Salvage Asset Recovery, a team of experts specializing in recovering funds from online frauds, including binary trading scams. Salvage Asset Recovery used advanced forensic techniques to track down the stolen funds and worked relentlessly to retrieve every penny I had lost. Thanks to their hard work and professionalism, I was able to recover all my lost money. I am truly grateful for their expertise, which turned a situation that seemed irreversible into a positive outcome. Now, I want to share my experience with others to prevent anyone from falling into the same trap. While binary trading can appear enticing, it is a space where scams are alarmingly common. If you’ve already fallen victim to such a scam, I highly recommend reaching out to experts like Salvage Asset Recovery. They specialize in recovering funds lost in binary trading, forex, and other online investment scams. Please, take caution before investing in any online trading platform. Ensure it’s fully regulated and verified. If you’ve already been defrauded, remember that there is hope for recovery. Salvage Asset Recovery helped me reclaim my funds, and they can help you too.

Losing money can be horrible. It tends to send you into a downward spiral of despair, which is exactly what happened to me. I invested money on the platform and everything seemed legit until I realized I had been scammed. I was depressed for days until a user in one of the communities I followed mentioned that he knew of a platform that could help. I gave them a chance despite my reluctance and it was the best choice I ever made. My money was recovered within hours. Be careful and make sure you are aware of what you are investing in. The intensity of the game, the excitement of the crowd, and the bond with my teammates are things that make football more than just a job it’s my passion. Off the pitch, I’ve always been mindful of securing my future, and I knew that investing my money wisely was essential to maintaining my financial stability after my playing days. When I first heard about an investment broker that promised high returns with minimal risk, it sounded like a great opportunity to grow my savings. The company had a professional appearance, with glowing testimonials and a polished website that instilled confidence. They reassured me that they had a foolproof strategy for earning returns while minimizing risk, so I felt comfortable entrusting them with a significant portion of my earnings. I decided to invest 1 million euros, believing it was a sound decision that would help me secure my future. At first, everything seemed to go according to plan. I saw modest but steady returns, and the broker’s platform appeared to be user-friendly and transparent. Attempts to contact the broker were met with vague responses and delays, and soon, I realized that I had been scammed. The realization that I had lost 1 million euros was crushing. It felt like an enormous betrayal especially since I had worked so hard to build my career and manage my finances carefully. I was overwhelmed with a sense of hopelessness and frustration. I felt lost, not knowing what to do or where to turn for help. HOW TO SPY ON MY SPOUSE'S PHONE // CRYPTO PANDEMIC HUNTER
To be honest, I'm not proud of having to write this, but I feel it's important to share my experience in case it can help someone else facing similar doubts. I suspected my ex was being unfaithful, and the doubts were making me restless. I'm not tech-savvy at all, but after days of endless worries, I stumbled upon Crypto Pandemic Hunter while researching ways to possibly confirm my suspicions.
Honestly, I was skeptical. Spying software always seemed complicated and something requiring advanced computer skills. But the more I read about it on Crypto Pandemic Hunter, the more I felt like it might be the only way to get the peace of mind I desperately craved.
What surprised me most was how user-friendly the whole process was. The team walked me through everything step-by-step. The software itself was surprisingly intuitive, even for someone like me who struggles with basic tech. The interface was clean, and the instructions were clear.
Within a short time, I started getting access to the data I needed. The spying software provided call logs, text messages, and even social media activity. I won't go into all the details, but it didn't take long to uncover the truth—my ex was indeed being unfaithful.
While the discovery was painful, I can't deny that Crypto Pandemic Hunter provided me with the clarity I needed to move forward. The tool was easy to use, and the support I received was invaluable.
I understand that using spying software raises ethical concerns; however, in my situation, I felt it was the only way to confirm my suspicions and regain control of my life. If you're considering finding the truth, I recommend you reach out to Crypto Pandemic Hunter.5 -
