Him: you create objects on the stack with the 'new' keyword and they get automatically released when no other object references them
In my mind: wtf is this guy talking about? Is he confusing C++ with Java? Does he really know C++? Let's make him write some code, just to be sure
Me: can you write a program that prints numbers from 1 to 10?
Ten minutes and twenty mistakes later...
Me: okay, so what is this <int> here in angle brackets? What is a template?
Him: no idea
Me: you wrote 'cout', why sometimes do I see 'std::cout' instead? What is 'std'?
Answer: no idea, never heard of 'std'
I think: on his resume he also said he is a Java expert. Let's see if he knows the difference between the two. He *must* have noticed that one is byte-compiled and the other one is compiled to native code! Otherwise, how does he run his code? He must answer this question correctly:
Me: what is the difference between Java and C++? One has a Virtual Machine, what about the other?
Him: Java has the Java Virtual Machine
Me: yes, and C++?
Him: I guess C++ has a virtual machine too. The C++ Virtual Machine
Me (exhausted): okay, I don't have any other questions, we will let you know

I just installed VSCode for the first time yesterday; running on a MacBook. I spent the early hours of the day working on my C++ project on there. Moving to the workspace was really, really easy; I haven’t had the best of experience with Visual Studio.
VSCode is so clean and light. I love the extensions they have for different languages; I’ve only tried the C/C++ one at the moment. I also love the fact that you can create json preference files for shell/process tasks and also for launching different kinds of debug sessions.
It has a fully functional, built-in terminal. And at this moment, I’m looking to fork the code from GitHub to try and see if I can add something that’s been bugging me since yesterday.
One of the many nice things I’ve gotten from devRant since I joined. Thanks folks.8 -

All the time while I'm programming I hate Java.... Don't hate me now :D I'm learning Java in high school. I very love very fast programming languages such as C and C++, so this is why I don't like Java, but there are some reasons why I like Java. I just started learning how to create own window. What the hack is this? This is so simple. I tried to create window in C/C++ with OpenGL, just blank window with color. Complicated..... But with java it's fairy tale.

This book...
This book, available for free online or you can buy it, written in 1994. But so under appreciated by people for some reason most people never have seen it or know about it. But this is the ONLY book I know of that actually covers this topic.. the only book in existence that specifically goes thru how OOP can be done with C.
NOW hold up before you say just use C++ stop and think for a second.. bear with me.
First off this book is purely for informational purposes and educational use to deepen your understanding of what OOP is actually doing behind the scenes in languages like C++ where keywords exist for these things and you just blindly use them without thinking about under the hood.
This book contains a lot of code and builds you up a complexly library from scratch to make OOP in C... now I don’t take this book literally and this but I have implemented some concepts from this book in projects in the past, and it helps a lot.
Also in my honest opinion If you finish this book, you will be a better C programmer AND c++ programmer, C programming because it teaches you a lot about complex things that you never thought about doing with the language. It proves you can do polymorphism can do inheritance and encapsulation. And it’s not really bloated either.
This books is an awesome book, if you don’t understand C pointers you definitely will after this book.. if you don’t understand OOP in C++ what’s really going on.. you will after this book. After all C++ began as just a preprocessor of C.
Great book for writing reusable, extendable large scale embedded c systems.
Anyway.. rare book of which should not be rare considering it’s free.

There was a computer programming teacher in my 1st semester who taught C. He used to have this conventional way of teaching C like other Engineering subjects which was going to more theories before writing actual codes.

Guy: Sir, why do we need to learn C? There are other languages used extensively for other tasks like python,etc. Why bother with this boring C?
Teacher: C is used to learn other languages. After learning C, you can easily learn other languages.

Teacher: It is used in academics to lay foundation for students to learn other languages which are used to build softwares.

In my wallowing experience as a freelancer I've noticed that almost all C/C++ clients are perfectionist. You just can't please them by getting the job done quickly.
I got a libcurl job from one the other day to scrape data from a target website and within an hour it was ready. I notified the client and he was both amazed and confused assuming it would take the whole week.

Everytime i see someone listing a shitload of languages, i safely assume that they speak around 2-3 of them fluently. I did some c++ and can write a site in php but they are nowhere near my java knowledge, so i only list them as something i played around with. There is just no way you are fluent in c++, java and javascript because they take half a lifetime to master individually7

Soo... Turns out, if your laptop has usb-c charging and it has several such usb-c ports, you can use them simultaneously.
My lappy has issues with usb-c sharging, i.e. it becomes sluggish when charging w/ usbc (compared to on-battery and charging through barrel plug). Aaaaand Linux tends to occasionally crash if I unplug the charger while it's "awake". I wanted to change chargers, so I figured I could plug in the second one (hoping not to see any smoke) and unplug the first one. As soon as I plugged in the second one, all the lag disappeared and the battery keeps charging.
So if you have an usb-c charger that's too weak for your laptop, try using two of them :D

Fuck whoever says that java is easier than c++. If i populate memory i can just fucking clean it out. I have access to the literal fucking stack my code runs on. I can integrate assembly. Why the heck would you allow (or need) nested block comments? Imo this is a major design flaw in the kotlin linter.
I always use /*... //*/ so I can remove the comment starter w/o having to remove the comment end, but kotlin just starts a second, nested comment there.
Java, C, Cpp, C#, JS,... Not one of these uses nested block comments. I think jetbrains was just lazy?

I love it. It combines the best bits of C++, Java, Ruby and even some Python. It still is C ABI and C++ ABI (ish) compatible. It can do everything you need it to. It's not limited like Java. It feels cleaner than C. I LOVE IT. But I don't understand why there's not much going on about it. Is it because it's not 100% stable yet? I don't know. AAAARGH7 -

Greatest language of all times is still C. It stood against the test of time. Any new language including Rust can hope to ba barely performant than C with too much overload.(I know most cpp abstractions if more efficient handwritten C equivalent but still).

When I got my current role, I moved from a Desktop C# job to the Full Stack Web job I now have. I had C# experience and had dabbled in some spaghetti JS at home but was certainly no web developer. When I finished explaining my experience to a recruiter, he said:
"Oh, ok. So, I can see that you have some.good C# experience, but we need to improve your .net"

I like being diverse in what I can program. I like software development, web development, networking programming, I’m starting to get into embedding programming and using lower level languages like C/C++ (I’ve used them before but not for anything practical) and I enjoy the diversity. It makes me feel good knowing I can extend my programming knowledge.

Can someone tell me why C++ and python are so widely used in the AI department? I kind of understand… you want maximum performance (plus GPU) with C++ or easy logic with Python but still, it seems like other languages would still have there benefits in AI. It just doesn't make sense to me, why isnt it like every single other part of computer science where everyone under 22 thinks "now this is what JavaScript was made for!" (I mean js is used so much in other parts of cs, why not AI). Am I missing something? Maybe the resources are missing for AI in other languages? Can someone please expand12

C# has static binding by default. Meaning methods aren't overrideable unless you specifically tag them as virtual. I love how in java you can take someone else's random class and override everything with some additional or alternate behaviour.13

My C adventure is going horribly. So I stopped. I took a second to breathe then looked at my current resources decided to use the 2 books i have as references to learn from as well, then found a reasonably long YouTube guide so I can have someone verbally explain something, and I have a friend and a few places I can now ask questions if I need it. Started looking through jvm languages first because thats where i feel home, but they are all just subpar versions of java.
Then i started looking at script languages but anything they do, i can just do with java (i know js too, dont recommend that)
Out of the other languages, c# is the only thing that can give me something extra through unity, but hell, i can just use jMonkey.

I kind of don’t like OOP. There I said it.
Don’t get me wrong there are times I like using it. I don’t mind some of the features but I can rarely find times I want to use them.
It can be useful depending on the project but I mostly don’t use it and when I’m using Python I always feel like I have to? I know Python offers multiple types paradigms of programming to use but everyone’s making a big deal about OOP and I can rarely ever find uses for it. What I said for Python also goes for C++ I feel like I’m forced to do it. And I especially hate it in C++ fuck that.
I’d just like to use Python, and C++ without using it or if I do not have to use all the fancy features. And kinda wish Java and C# didn’t force OOP on you but I just don’t use all the fancy features in those languages (I don’t even use java but I’m mostly talking about C# for that one).
It’s not that I don’t know how to use it it’s that I can never find a use for any of the features or just don’t want to actually do it. Personally I only really see it shining in Game development, GUI development, and MAYBE network programming??
By all means I’m not trying to flame on OOP, I just wanted to throw my OOPinion (HA) on the matter. in fact you can tell me why you like it or dislike it. I’d like to discuss the topic with anyone.9 -
So I have never done 'real' development on anything bar my current game engine Virgil, however found myself referring to C documentation for GLib and SDL2 rather than valadoc documentation.
Decided fuck it, I'm already converting everything to Vala's pointer syntax so I can have manual memory control, implementing stb_image and contemplating reworking SDL2_image into raw C so I'm not depending on extra libraries... Why do all this when I can just learn C and have more control.
Everything was going well and decided to buy the C programming language book, already knew about pointers and structs but ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boi was I not ready for malloc .-.7 -
I absolutely love it when C# programmers who never learnt any language outside of their bubble discover C# is not the most feature up-to-date programming language. I am honestly annoyed by people who can read Java syntax but can't read ML syntax (because it is too 'clever' to be used in production). What a bunch of mediocre COBOL programmers!4

Or users can burn .hex file by using avrdude alone.

I'm at a bit of a loose end here, I'll do my best to explain and I hope it all makes sense.
I'm trying to find a way to wrap a C++ Console App in a C# Class so I can use the C++ App as a library within the C# app rather than triggering the C++ exe and providing a command to it.
The reason why I wish to do it this way is for maintainability, so I can make changes to the C++ app without affecting the C# App.
I've been looking at tutorials and stack overflow to see if's its possible, but for someone with learning difficulties, I'm struggling to find the right path to take as I'm seeing conflicting info.

Wk25: Objective C. I was working on a project for a plugin, the host for which was in objective C. Basically the language lets you get away with arbitrary code injection and runtime inspection of everything. You can print class names, function names and variable names, then use all.
We had to "use" these features slightly creatively to get access to everything we needed. And symbol stripping doesn't stop jack.1 -

sigh. I hope one day Linux can be rewritten in something with more sensible package management. C/C++ can just be a real pain more often that not. My case was trying to install CUDA on ubuntu 16 following the OFFICIAL developer guide. gave up after trying for an hour. It needed the kernel headers for compile the drivers and it was jsut alot of pain dealing with files being in the wrong place and gcc version mismatching and tons of other cryptic errors. and this is for ubuntu which is a pretty mainstream distro.8

I'm thinking of designing a programming language.
I want it to have easy to read syntax like python. Inheritance and interfaces like java. More advanced concepts like pointers and memory management like c++.
I was originally going to write my own compiler but I figured it's not worth reinventing the wheel. So the current plan is to basically just create a parser that turns a source file into c++ code and then that is compiled with g++. The only problem I can think of with that is catching runtime errors.
How does this language sound?
My purpose is to have a language that is as easy to read as python but with the speed of a compiled program and the ability to use it for embedded projects. I feel like reading larger C++ projects can be quite time consuming. So I figure the trade off of taking a little longer to write the code to make it more obvious what is going on is better than having a lot of syntax that can be tough to walk though the logic of (I find this often with c and c++, not like I don't figure it out but It definitely takes longer than it does to read and understand python)4 -
Installing C++ libraries. There's no standardised system to download a library and link it's headers into my project as of now, so I generally end up symlinking its headers into an include directory, which can be very annoying.5

Back then when i was researching web stuff it was HTML + CSS + javascript and something called jquery, ok cool seems like I can pick it up in the future. I am very thankful to C as I face less pain while dealing with pointers and memory allocation and deallocation in C++. I am very thankful to C++, as I grasp OOP and template concepts out of it and it was also my first language for DSAlgo implementation. I feel very fortunate to move to Java after C++ rather than python. Although Java's design is f**ked and it feeds on a computer's memory, it taught me to deal with objects( unlike C++). It taught me how objects are clearly different than primitive data types like int, float, char...And best of all, Java provided me everything I need to safely switch to Python, it's all because of Java, I can clearly understand the working of python. All the stuff which I find weird in python before is sounding logical to me now. As java taught me how to deal with objects, I am confident to say that "I CAN DEAL WITH PYTHON". With respect to all my 3 prior languages: C, C++, and Java.2

Fuck the C preprocessor. There's no way I can track this down it seems, but my assert implementation is being quietly ignored and I have no recourse for it.

What baffles me is how despite being on version 3 of Swift, Apple still havent updated Xcodes refactoring tools to support it. All I want to do is rename a variable or function but oh no. After getting fed up of “being productive” I fooled around on GitHub and had a look at the Stuxnet virus source code which was obtained using a decompiler. Experts who reverse-engineered it found out that it was written in “object-oriented C.” While C is not an object oriented language, anything you can do with classes you can do with structs, static functions, pointers & function pointers. You can see this coding style in the Linux kernel, CPython interpreter and many other places. That was the first indication that a government agency or defence industry was responsible. Objective-C syntax is more readable than Swift.
The verbose naming conversations feel natural in Objective-C, but in Swift they look rather nasty to me.
Also Swift syntax feels inconsistent in many parts of the language, which forces you to memorize when you can and when you can't use a certain feature (i.e where, case).
Am I the only one that thinks Objective-C looks a lot cleaner than Swift code?

Failing to self study because i always get stuck on tutorials like so:
Do a, now do b. You should now get C. You can then proceed with d etc.
BUT I DON'T GET C. WHY NOT?! I FOLLOWED ALL YOUR FUCKING STEPS YOU SHITTY GUIDE/BOOK/ASSHOLE.
So i had to get basics from school where i could ask questions to such stupid things. It got better, but i sometimes still run in to it, and still can't google foo my way out of it. -
For testing, I added an override environment variable in some C# code so I can set it in the projects debug properties when I run it.
Turns out that while it's possible to do this in C++ projects, MS decided that they don't want you to do that for C# projects as there are other ways that they want to do it.
So it's not possible to modify your environment for C# projects within visual studio.

First project I'm doing with C++.
I was using Eclipse (for C++ obviously) for some hours. It sucks.
Switched to VS Code. All the editor tool you can dream of are in. But there's no way to configure the project (includes, build system, toolchains…).
"What a fool" I say, remembering there's Visual Studio Community… which is only for Windows.
So I'm currently using BOTH Visual Studio Code and Eclipse.
Why can't there be ONE good, full featured and free C++ IDE for Linux ?38 -

Can anybody explain why in C# when using string.Format("{0:C}", myNumber);
results in a string with special characters used for spacing instead of the normal space character.
This caused a issues in the PDF I was generating and I'm wondering why the special characters.4 -

TL;DR: Best C# and .NET accreditation courses (UK)?
I've started a new job as a .NET Software Developer. Now I have never done C# before but they want to send me on some courses to learn.
First I have to recommend what courses though. Price isn't an issue but they want me to give them a variety of courses available. Ones that are crash courses and online learning courses. I want it to be accredited so I can come away with something to show on my CV/LinkedIn.
What C# and .NET courses would you guys recommend or what course providers would you recommend (in the UK).

NEED HELP: C#
Please I am a Beginner in C# and I need little help with Methods.
In the Picture attached, I'd love to use User input as Parameters in the method. Example: example getting user imput with Console.ReadLine(); and storing it to num1 or num2 as parameter in the Method.
Is this possible in C#, if so, how can I make it work? Thanks

Making my first game in Unreal, i see how blueprints could be useful. I don't like them though. I heard you can use c# in unreal but im only finding stuff for c++?3

Can you start services manually when using docker compose?
As in having container A, B and C with an executable A, B and C (originating from the same source btw) where I can start/stop A, B, C independently?
All examples seem to use it as a whole thing where all containers must be up for the service to work.2 -

Why on earth can one perform calculations on pointers in c++? I can think of a dozen ways this could go wrong, but none where this is useful.
Following example:
int t = 1234;
int tt = 5555;
int* p = &t;
int* pp = *(p + 1):
Here pp will give me 5555...5 -

What is something I can make as a hobby to learn go better? I've made software like a text editor in python, games in Java and c++, software in c, and irc bots in ruby.
Is go used for anything that I can make as a hobby? I'm not in college or out of it yet so I don't have a job as a dev either.

C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition teaches what I want to learn but the Xamarin section seems a bit short. C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight was recommended a lot to beginners online and I can always learn Xamarin from Microsoft Learn12 -

I run the code cleaner tool, OH CHRIST it's trying to sanitise the automatically generated code, I don't want this.
I try to exclude... takes ages to work out that while specifying the dirs is absolute you can only exclude relative but from what? I want to block a/b but not a/c/b but no it's all you can only block all b b it a/b, b/b, c/b, c/b, a/c/b, etc.
I google for other solutions, nothing but trash, docs a trash, here's some examples but we don't tell you the actual behaviour. All I want is to get everything in /home/hilldog/emails but not /home/hilldog/emails/topsekret how hard can it be?
